First Day of Fall

It's hard to believe it's fall already. Where did summer go?

I slept well again last night, despite a thunderstorm around 11 p.m., but got up a little later than usual this morning. After breakfast, I did a treadmill session. Once I was ready for the day, Hubbie and I ran to the store (again) to get last-minute perishable groceries for the trip.

We spent the rest of the morning loading stuff into the camper, and preparing food to take with us. We like to pre-prepare the meals we plan for trips, so we don't have to cook while we are away. We want to devote most of our time to shopping and touring.

This trip, we'll have meatloaf (left from tonight's supper), with leftover mashed potatoes, or sliced cold for sandwiches for lunch, corn chowder to be served with pimento cheese sandwiches, hamburgers/turkey burgers, to have with microwaveable baked potatoes and salad, and whole wheat pancakes, and scrambled egg substitute, with bacon or sausage on the side.

At 2 p.m., I met a dental appointment to have my teeth cleaned. I was back home about 3 p.m. I spent the rest of the afternoon before supper planning our Branson trip, including making a schedule for the days and times to attend the several shows we have tickets for. When we get back from this trip, I'll make reservations for the show, and Hubbie will reserve a camping space.

After a supper of meatloaf, mashed potatoes, and green beans, Hubbie and I relaxed and watched a Masterpiece Theater Mystery from the public channel, followed by the second night of "Dancing With the Stars" competitions.

Monday, September 21

I slept well last night, and we were up by 6:30 so I could get ready to go to water aerobics. The sun shone brightly in a cloudless sky this morning, but it was humid. A ribbon of fog lay among the treetops on the hill near the campus, with the steeple on the college's chapel, and the bell tower on the business building peeking through. Already, the leaves on some trees are turning autumn colors.

Water was added to the pool since last Friday, so it was nippy. And the dressing room was frigid, again. But these discomforts are worth it for the pleasure of swimming and doing water aerobics, as well as for visiting with friends.

After I got home and ready for the day, Hubbie and I ran errands...to a local radio station to exchange tickets for a Branson. The Sinatra show we had tickets for closed for lack of attendance. We'd purchased the tickets inexpensively last summer at a promotion event held by the radio station.

The station was very willing for us to choose another show (in fact, we were told we could choose two shows to replace the tickets we had), but that was easier said than done, since a couple of the ones we looked at had also closed, and others were not scheduled to perform until November or December. We will be going in October.

Finally, though, we did find two musical shows that we will enjoy. We were given two tickets to each show, with each ticket admitting two people (we need only three admittances...one for Mother). Besides those, the lady at the station threw in two (admits four) tickets to a comedy show, and four tickets to a military museum. All this entertainment should keep us busy while we're in Branson.

From there, we went to the pharmacy to get a prescription changed from a name brand to a generic one. I have always taken the $4 generic brand, but for some reason this month, the pharmacy filled my prescription with a name brand. I really don't know if this was a mistake of the pharmacy, or of the doctor when she renewed my prescription.

Anyway, it took two forevers to fill the prescription. While we waited, I noticed a couple of shopping carts filled with little bags of goodies. I talked with one of the staff, who said he was filling the bags to be given to kindergartners that were to visit and learn about apples. Apparently, this is Johnny Appleseed week, and the kids are learning about the fruit by visiting this grocery store. About 300 kids will visit during the week. They will sample two kinds of apples...a Granny Smith, and a sweet one, and they will receive an apple in their goodie bag, along with a pencil, erasers, and other fun things. The staff member said he has been doing this for five years. I think it's a nice thing for him and the store to do, and I told him so.

While I waited, I also noticed bags of bananas at 39 cents a pound, and grapes at 99 cents a pound, so I grabbed those. I like to take a variety of fresh fruits on our camping trip to have for breakfast with Mother's quick breads, or with whole wheat bagels and cream cheese. This trip, we'll also take along a loaf of the delicious whole wheat bread that I bought in Corsicana during our Texas trip.

It was noon by the time we got things squared away at the radio station and the pharmacy, so we headed home for a lunch of leftover spaghetti. Then we set out again, this time going to the farmer's market for tomatoes, and to the WDCS for a few grocery items.

Back home, I ironed the clothes that Hubbie and I will wear on our camping trip to the capital city this week. Mother came over later, and she I went into the yard so I could take a picture of her holding a basket of peppers that she picked from the garden (see previous blog). After that, I spent the rest of the afternoon gathering stuff for the trip.

Supper tonight was leftover autumn stew, with bread and butter. After that, we settled in for an evening of TV, as usual. We started with a movie called "A Friendship to Die For," from the Lifetime Movie Network. A couple of female friends want money enough to murder for it.

After that, we watched the premiere of the new season's "Dancing With the Stars."

Pick a Peck of Peppers

Mother holds a basket of bell and banana peppers that she picked in the veggie garden this morning. Some will be added to salads, others will be prepared for the freezer.

Sunday, September 20

Had a hard time falling asleep last night. Don't know why...maybe because we went directly to bed at midnight, after watching a three-hour football game. I thought no more about the game after going to bed, but my mind keep reviewing other activities of the day. It was nearly 3 a.m. before I drifted off.

So it was nearly 9 a.m. before I got up this morning. I skipped my exercises and just went ahead and got dressed. Mother came over shortly after we were up and started a pot of what's called autumn stew, from a recipe I cut out of last week's Sunday newspaper Parade Magazine. The recipe calls for cubed pork loin, carrots, onions, celery, tomatoes, and apples, with various spices, and the addition of a can of beer. This is served over noodles. It's delicious.

While she was doing that, I decorated the mantel for fall. There's still more decorating to do, but I'll wait until we get back from our trip this week to do it.

This afternoon, Hubbie and I went to the WDCS for groceries related to the upcoming camping trip. When we got back, we began loading food into the camper refrigerator and cabinets. As we were doing this, we noticed a yard sale going on across the street, so we went to check it out. But there was nothing there of use to us.

After that, we watched a movie..."Cellular," starring Kim Basinger, and William H. Macy, which is about a woman being held captive who manages to dial the cell phone of a young man (Chris Evans). The young man goes through all sorts of adventures in his quest to save the woman. The movie is rated PG-13.

Otherwise, on this sunshiny, but very humid day, I did my usual Sunday stuff, like programming the DVR for the week's shows, and reading the Sunday newspaper. For supper, I fixed egg substitute, scrambled with onions, bell peppers, mushrooms, tomatoes, and pepper Jack cheese. We had this with toast, followed by dishes of canned peaches topped with cottage cheese.

Later, we watched a couple of more movies. The first one was "The Attic." It was rated TV-14 off the Chiller channel, but was originally rated "R" for language and violence. A family moves into a beautiful home, and soon the college-age daughter begins to see what she believes to be her evil twin. The twin wreaks havoc, but no one else believes she exists. A suspenseful movie with a predictable twist.

The second movie was "Mending Fences," from the Hallmark Channel. This one stars Angie Dickinson as an aging woman whose ranch is being threatened when developers divert water from her property to force her to sell out so a casino can be built there. In the meantime, she and her daughter and granddaughter (who have come home from the big city), iron out relationship problems.
