This is the first day of summer. I guess I should have gone outside and enjoyed the hot, humid weather, but I didn't. Spent the whole day indoors.
I was up at 7:30, and did stair stepping, resistance bands, and weights exercises. Hubbie accompanied Mother to our house around 9 a.m., and I set her up with a new jigsaw puzzle before I went upstairs to get ready for the day.
Once I was dressed, I went to the office computer and printed out a photo of my brother with his dog, and a copy of his obituary, both of which I will add to his scrapbook pages.
To do this, it was necessary to delete the computer history in order to eliminate Hubbie's social network page. Then, I shut the computer down and rebooted so I could enter my information and access my page. After I made the copies, I had to go through the whole process again to get Hubbie's page back.
By the time I finished fooling with all that, it was close to lunchtime. After lunch, I gathered ingredients for making jelly in the automatic jelly maker. This time we used our favorite pectin, rather than the one suggested by the jelly maker manufacturer.
Drat it, the jelly failed again. This time, the juice and sugar didn't even simmer (it didn't come to a full boil with the other batches, so I thought simmer was the appropriate heat), and the sugar didn't even dissolve.
I checked online to find out what others said about the product, and found that it got rave reviews from everyone but one, and that person had the same difficulty I've been having. So I decided the unit is defective and packed it up to be sent back for a replacement.
This whole jelly-making project has been laughable, if frustrating. Tomorrow, I plan to either re-process some of the jelly that has failed, or start anew by making a batch the old fashioned way, on the stove.
Mother went back to her puzzle after the jelly-making fiasco, and I settled in to catch up on reading newspapers, and playing on my e-tablet.
For supper, we had pancakes and scrambled egg substitute, using failed apple-peach jelly for syrup. It was pretty good.
Hubbie accompanied Mother to her house afterward, and then he and I watched TV, including a 2002 movie called "City of God," a subtitled feature about a couple of boys in Rio de Janeiro, who grow up to take different life paths. One becomes a drug dealing member of a violent gang, and the other eventually becomes a photographer. It's rated "R" for extreme violence. Based on a true story.

Thursday, June 20
Up at 7:30, but skipped my exercises so I could get the house ready for the scrapbook club meeting. I expected only one lady, but it makes no difference if one or a dozen are expected, the house still needs to be presentable.
I'm especially particular that the kitchen and bathroom be spic and span for guests, so I cleared counters and scrubbed everything down in the kitchen, and Hubbie took care of the bathroom.
Spent the rest of the morning getting together the things Mother and I would need to complete scrapbook pages begun at out last meeting several months ago (weather prevented our meeting before now).
Just before 1 p.m., one of the members called to say she wouldn't be here. I actually didn't expect her anyway, but she said she was feeling well enough to attend, and would have if the energy company had not been digging near her home and hit a water line, making it impossible for this lady to bathe. And she wasn't about to go away from her home if she couldn't have a bath.
The other lady arrived twenty minutes early. She apologized, saying she thought her other errands would take longer, but I assured her it was fine that she was here early. In fact, I was glad she was, because there were a few club business matters I wanted to discuss with her, to bring her up to date after all the months of not meeting. Both the other ladies have assured me that they are in agreement with whatever I decide concerning club funds, but I still like to keep them apprised.
The guest scrapbooker brought along with her two bags of Christmas greeting cards given to her by a business. We plan to cut elements and greetings from them to use in making cards for Caring Hands. I think I will make that our project for the scrapbook club meeting next month. In the meantime, I need to find some place to store them.
Business matters out of the way, we then spent a while catching up on each other's lives. This lady has had a bad few weeks, or I should say some of her friends have...one recently lost her husband, and another has gone through a divorce after 20 years of marriage. So she has been in demand as a confidant. She's glad her friends lean on her, but it is emotionally draining.
I know how she feels, since I have experienced loss, too, with the death of a brother, and a friend from water aerobics, in the past couple of weeks.
We agreed that at our age, losing friends and family members is becoming more the norm than the exception, which is unsettling.
We worked on our individual projects until around 2 p.m., and then I served refreshments...slices of dark chocolate cake with dollops of fat-free whipped topping, and coffee. Our guest preferred a glass of water with a couple ice cubes.
Hubbie joined us for refreshments, and then he took the van to the shop for an oil change and to have the air conditioner checked for freon, since we've noticed the unit was cooling properly.
Our meeting was over at 3 p.m., and the other member left. We were all satisfied that as well as visiting, we got a few projects done. Mother finished gluing journal entries (that I'd typed earlier) onto scrapbook pages featuring one of the infant great-granddaughters, and our guest and I made greeting cards for family. She made one for a nephew and one for a grandson, and I made one for a great-grandson.
Later, I heated leftovers for supper...steamed veggies, and macaroni and cheese...and baked a can of biscuits to go with it.
Hubbie accompanied Mother home afterward, and then he and I watched TV, including British mysteries based on Dorothy Sayers novels. A circa 1930s detective novelist solves the mystery of a murder at a women's college (on DVD borrowed from the library). This was a three-part movie that took us up to bedtime.

Wednesday, June 19
Up at 6 a.m. to get ready for water aerobics. I was anxious to go to the session today, since the pool will be closed until July 1. The powers-that-be decided to save some money, I guess, by jumping the gun and turning the temperature to pool way down, because it was pretty chilly today. Hm-m-m...two cliches in one sentence. I think that's a record for me.
Our regular leader was still out sick, so the substitute led the session. During the water noodle exercises, one of the ladies lost control of her noodle and ended up head first in the water. Somehow, she got all tangled with the noodle and could do nothing but flail about trying to right herself. Some other ladies near her finally got her upright, spluttering and embarrassed, but okay.
This same lady suffered a severe leg cramp on Monday and struggled to hold onto the side of the pool while she walked along and finally exited. I was very concerned for her, so when she left early today, I did too, to be sure she was okay in the dressing room.
Back home, I enjoyed a couple of cups of coffee, got ready for the day, and then gathered supplies for scrapbooking and card making tomorrow.
I want to offer refreshments tomorrow, so I tried to locate a chocolate cake I bought at the Scottish Festival. Actually, I sent Hubbie to look for it, since he was the one who put it away in one of the freezers. Naturally, he couldn't find it, so he waltzed me out to our freezer to show me it wasn't there.
Well, it would have been difficult to find anything in that jumbled freezer, so I said that today might be a good time to take everything out of the unit, and thaw it, since it was thick with ice. Hubbie stowed everything in two big ice chests, and then when the freezer was ready to re-load, I helped organize the food into categories of fruits, vegetables, meats, and miscellaneous.
Still no cake, though. Hubbie said he looked through Mother's freezer, but didn't find it there, either, so I gave up, thinking I must have been mistaken about purchasing the cake in the first place.
Later, Mother prepared veggies for the steamer...potatoes, yellow squash, carrots, onions, celery, broccoli, and cauliflower. Some of the veggies were from the veggie tray I served at Hubbie's birthday party Saturday. This was a good way to use them.
While the veggies steamed, I relaxed a while, read the newspapers, and played on my e-tablet.
Just before I was ready to serve supper, I baked a pan of canned biscuits, which we had with a choice of honey or three-berry jelly.
Hubbie and I accompanied Mother to her house, since I wanted to take another look in her freezer to see if I could find that frazzling chocolate cake. I did. It was in a plastic bag at the back of the bottom shelf. Hubbie had not even looked in that bag, even though he's the one who put it there.
So now the cake is thawing, and will be ready to serve at the scrapbook club meeting tomorrow.
Hubbie and I spent the rest of the evening watching TV, including a 2010 western called "6 Gun." It won't win any awards, but Hubbie still enjoyed it.
Followed that with a 2001 crime drama called, "Tempo," starring Melanie Griffith.

Up at 7 a.m., and did stair stepping, resistance bands, and weights exercises after breakfast. Once I was ready for the day, I made a batch of macaroni and cheese to put with Mother's supper tonight, since I planned to take Hubbie out for a birthday dinner.
I used two cheeses in the sauce...American and Monterey Jack...and one I added the sauce, seasoned with no sodium seasoning, pepper, and paprika, to the cooked macaroni, I put the dish in the oven to bake for thirty minutes.
While the mac and cheese baked, I called the scrapbook club members. One member is still battling vertigo, so she probably will not be here Thursday. But the other lady said she's anxious to get together, because she wants to make some cards for her family, and also she has a couple of bags of cards discarded by a business that we can cut apart for elements to use on cards we make for Caring Hands Hospice.
By now it was lunchtime, so I fixed Ramen noodle soup for Mother, and Hubbie and I sampled the macaroni and cheese. Afterward, Mother went to her puzzle, which she finished today, and Hubbie and I ran a couple of errands.
Back home, I spent quite a while making a special sympathy card to send to my niece.
Then I changed clothes for going out to dinner and a movie. Tonight, I treated Hubbie to a meal at a Mexican restaurant (his favorite). Then we saw the highly-touted "Man of Steel," in 3D. This is probably not an award-winning film, but it has plenty of action, and the lead actor playing Superman, Henry Cavil, is pretty to look at.
Before we left for the evening, we accompanied Mother to her house, where she enjoyed a supper of cold fried chicken, mac and cheese, baked beans, and coleslaw. She was able to heat the mac and cheese, and the beans, in the microwave. She was invited to join us in dinner out, but she's not fond of Mexican food, so she declined. Also, she insisted she wanted us to have an evening out alone.
The dinner and movie were the last of the celebrations for Hubbie's birthday. He had a very nice several days.
Back home afterward, we wasted no time heading to bed. It good day, but we were tired at the end of it.

Monday, June 17
Today is Hubbie's birthday. Happy Birthday, Hubbie!
Up at 6 a.m. to get ready for water aerobics. In the dressing room, I talked with one of the lap swimmers who had finished her swim. She asked about the water aerobics member who died a couple of weeks ago, wondering where she was, since she hadn't seen her in several days.
When I told her the lady had died, she broke into tears. I mentioned that her obituary had been in the newspaper, but she said she never reads the newspaper. I felt bad that I delivered the news to her so bluntly. I guess I should have cushioned it a little.
But I'm amazed by the number of folks who say they don't read the local paper. How do they find out about anything going on in the community? I can understand relying on the Internet or TV for news, but we can only get local news from the local newspaper.
About 20 of us showed up for aerobics today, minus the regular leader, who has a bug. The pool was cool, but not intolerable, and I enjoyed the session, led by the lady who usually leads us in water noodle exercises.
Lately, I've been wearing a swimsuit I've had for a long time, but have only worn a couple of times. It's bright yellow, with big flowers on it. The ladies seem to like it. They even encourage me to work out with a bright yellow water noodle, because, they say, it makes me look like a "ray of sunshine." Yellow is a happy color, and lately we've needed anything that lifts our mood.
I learned that today and Wednesday are the only days we will have aerobics this week, and then we will be out all next week, because the coach/lifeguard has something he has to do during all that time.
Back home, after a couple of cups of coffee, I headed to the shower. In the meantime, Hubbie accompanied Mother to our house. She hadn't worked on her jigsaw puzzle in a few days, so she was ready to get back to it today.
I didn't accomplish much before lunch. During lunch, Mother and I presented Hubbie with birthday cards and gift cards. I also gave him scratch-off tickets, on which he won $15.
Right after lunch, thunderstorms cropped up, bringing lightning, thunder, and drenching rain. We got about an inch, and for a short time, the yard and the front porch were flooded.
When the rain abated, Hubbie and I ran errands. First, we went to the library to take back four DVDs and pick up four more. From there, we went to a department store to spend a $10 gift certificate we got at the silent auction last Friday night. I found an on-sale, very light weight, long-sleeve, teal plaid blouse that will be great for air-conditioned places this summer. I never go to stores, doctor's offices, or restaurants in summer without something to throw over my arms.
Then we went to another department store to take back the jeans I bought for Mother last week. She tried them on and found they were too small. So I exchanged them for the next size up.
Went to the WDCS after that to pick up a few grocery items. Stopped at the gas station then. The last stop was to the gas station/convenience store where I bought the scratch-offs, so Hubbie could cash them in.
We headed home after that. It was 3:30 by then. I began reading the mighty stack of newspapers that have been gathering since last Thursday. Shortly after 4 p.m., I started supper...fried chicken to go with leftover potato salad, baked beans, and coleslaw.
Hubbie accompanied Mother home after supper, and then he and I watched TV, including a movie called "Wimbledon," a 2004, PG-13, comedy/romance/sports film. It was cute, and we enjoyed it.

Sunday, June 16
The first thing this morning, I received a message from my niece that her father (my brother) died about 2:15 a.m. He was a half brother, really, but still dear to me. We hadn't seen each other in several years, but we exchanged phone calls from time-to-time, and I've been in close touch with Niece over the years.
I'm sad that I cannot travel to the east coast to be with Niece and the rest of that part of the family during this difficult time, but it is not possible, since I need to be home to care for Mother. This brother was ten years my senior, and he had been ill for a long time.
Niece has been a willing caretaker of her dad, but it's a blessing that she will no longer be burdened, and that he no longer has to suffer.
His passing means that Sis and I are the only remaining siblings...all three of our brothers are gone now.

Today is Father's Day. Hubby celebrated it quietly after an active day with his family yesterday.
He got up around 6 a.m., coughing and blowing, which woke me up. So we tramped back to the house from the camper, had breakfast, and got ready for the day.
He checked the air conditioner and turned it back on. Whatever was wrong with it yesterday seems to have resolved itself, at least temporarily, because it worked all day.
Around 9 a.m., he accompanied Mother to our house, and we wasted the day watching movies. We just didn't have the energy to do anything else after a busy several days.
We started with one called, "Salmon Fishing in the Yemen," a British romance/drama about a sheik who wants to bring salmon fishing to the desert. A British fisheries consultant sets out to help bring about this seemingly impossible idea. Along the way, a love story develops, too. This PG-13 (for love scenes) film is a good family drama.
Followed that with a movie on DVD borrowed from the library..."Swing Vote," starring Kevin Costner. A boozy man, single father of a pre-teen daughter, finds himself in the middle of a presidential election in which his vote will determine the outcome. This PG-13 movie (for utterance of THE word once, and the fact that the dad drinks) is also a good family film.
After that, we watched episodes of "Keeping Up Appearances," the comedy series from BBC.
Between movies, we had leftovers from yesterday for lunch, and for supper, I scrambled egg substitute with a little Monterey Jack cheese, and served it with toasted hamburger buns topped with our homemade three-berry jelly. We enjoyed both meals in the den, while we watched the movies.
It was 6:30 before Hubbie accompanied Mother home, and then he and I continued watching TV. Didn't accomplish a thing today beyond laundering a couple of loads of clothes.
