Br-r-r...cold morning. I didn't want to get out of my warm bed. But Hubbie was scheduled to go help the Master Gardeners with a bulb sale at 8 a.m., so we hauled ourselves out.
After breakfast, and once Hubbie had left, I did stair stepping, resistance bands, and weights exercises. When I was ready for the day, I accompanied Mother to our house.
I didn't have a major project planned for today, so we decided to make an apple cake, using a recipe I found online. I peeled apples, and Mother diced them. Then she helped measure the rest of the ingredients. I put it together and baked it. It didn't come out cake-like, but more the consistency of fruit bars.
Once the recipe was out of the oven, it was time for lunch. I heated the rest of the chicken noodle soup for Mother, and leftover sweet potatoes and corn-on-the cob for myself. I added Chinese beets to my plate. When Hubbie came home, he had a ham and cheese on rye bread sandwich, and chips.
We all sampled the apple cake. It's good, but Hubbie said it wasn't very sweet...that's probaby because I used sugar substitute in the recipe. He might enjoy it more with whipped topping or caramel sauce.
This afternoon, I intended to go to the museum to see the animal exhibits...wolves, birds of prey, and the large fish aquarium...but since it was such a cool day, Mother opted out, and when Hubbie got home, he fell asleep in his recliner right after lunch, so I gave up the idea.
Mother went to her puzzle after lunch, and I vegged with today's newspaper and my e-tablet.
Later, for lack of any other idea for supper, I peeled, sliced, and fried potatoes, and made biscuits and gravy to go with them. Not a very healthy supper, but it tasted good.
Afterward, Hubbie accompanied Mother to her house, and then we watched our favorite college football team as they played to an expected wide-margin loss.

Friday, Oct. 18
Up at 6 a.m. to get ready to go to water aerobics. Br-r-r, it was chilly this morning. A fleece outfit, with a hoodie and jacket felt good this morning. It would have felt even better if my swimsuit hadn't been damp. For some reason, it didn't dry when I hung it on the sliding door of the downstairs bathtub/shower. I never had this problem when I hung the suit in the upstairs bathroom.
To add insult to injury, I didn't notice until I reached the door of the gym that I had forgotten to put a towel in my swim bag. I debated whether or not I should just return home, or call Hubbie to bring the towel to me. I opted for the second choice. I almost thought I wasn't going to reach him though, when I called our land line and no one answered, and then I called his cell phone and go his message service. Finally got through to him on the land line, though.
As other ladies arrived at the gym, they expressed concern that I might be ill, until I explained why I was standing out there at the curb. I felt pretty silly.
By the time I finally got into the pool, it was already time for aerobics, so I didn't get a chance to swim in the deep end. But the workout was good.
At one point in the routine, we split up and form two lines on each side of the pool, and then race to the center, clap hands with someone from the other side, then race back to the side. One of the ladies and I try to maneuver so that we are across from each other, because we learned that when we team up, we are the fastest to get to the center of the pool and then return to the side.
The aerobics leader (good-naturedly) always tries to keep us from teaming up. She didn't manage it today, though, so as I was racing across one time, she cut in front of a lady in our line and grabbed my arm to stop me from reaching the middle. We all just cracked up at this extreme move to keep my partner and me from winning the race.
Back home afterward, I warmed up with cups of coffee, and then showered and dressed. It seems to take twice as long with my morning routine, using the downstairs bathroom.
Not long after I was ready for the day, it was time for lunch, which was a choice of soups with crackers and cheese or peanut butter.
After lunch, Mother went to her puzzle, and Hubbie and I went to the paint store to straighten out an order of too much paint for the kitchen, and too little for the stairwell. Hubbie wanted me to go with him, because he knew I wouldn't be willing to take no for an answer in getting the order straightened out, even though the store had a non-return policy for this on-sale expensive paint.
We got no hassle from the clerk who made the mistake, though. She simply checked our account on computer and saw right away what she had done, so she took back one can of paint and mixed another of the right color.
On the way home, we stopped at our favorite auto repair shop to get the tires on the van checked, since I noticed a warning sign on the dashboard when I drove to and from the gym this morning. Seems the change in weather affects tires, so they all needed to be inflated a bit. The guy at the shop said he has had one vehicle after another stop by today for the same service.
While we were there, a woman we know...a teacher at one of the colleges...came over to our vehicle to speak with me. She said she has been thinking about me, because there is a full time position open at the college for a photographer with the ability to write news releases, and I was the first person she thought of. Was I interested in a full time job? Sorry, but no I'm not.
Back home again, I gathered the ingredients for making jelly. Mother helped by measuring ingredients, and we got nine half pints of Reliance grape jelly. We added about a cup and a half of white grape juice to the batch, since we didn't have quite enough from the Reliance grapes that I squeezed a few days ago. It's a very pretty, pink colored jelly.
After making the jelly, we each occupied ourselves in our own way for the rest of the afternoon.
Around 3:30, a young man brought our new storage shed. I grabbed my camera and snapped photos of the process of getting it moved to its new home. Only one young man handled the whole operation. He brought the very large shed on a flatbed eighteen-wheeler truck, then raised the bed to slowly slide the shed part way onto the driveway.
Then he unloaded what is called a mule...a sort of forklift...that he slid under the shed. He then dragged the shed to its appointed place in the backyard. He used rollers to position the shed and level it. The whole process took about thirty minutes. It was fascinating to watch.
Later, for supper, Hubbie did the honors of making whole wheat pancakes for our supper. Of course, I prepared the batter, and did all the other little things needed for the meal, but it was very helpful that he actually cooked the pancakes.
After supper, Hubbie accompanied Mother to her house, and then he and I watched one-hour shows on TV.

Thursday, Oct. 17
Slept last night to the music of a dehumidifier and a fan running in the bathroom. Took awhile to drift off, but once I did, I slept soundly despite the noise.
We were up at 6:30. Skipped my exercises so I could be dressed and ready when the worker arrived. He was scheduled to be here at 8:30 or 9 a.m., but he didn't arrive until 10 a.m.
Today, he continued work in the bathroom, and then blew texture on the walls in both the bathroom and stairwell. It was an all-day project that kept him busy until around 5:30 p.m.
Mid-morning, Hubbie accompanied Mother to our house, and she went to her jigsaw puzzle. While she was occupied, Hubbie and I ran errands...to the library, to the newspaper office, and to a home improvement store to get ideas for a new vanity and sink/counter top.
It was noon by the time we left the home improvement store, so we stopped by a fast food restaurant and picked up cups of chili for lunch. We invited the worker to join us again. We feel that if we offer him lunch, he can eat and be back to work sooner than if he goes somewhere else for lunch.
We didn't accomplish anything else for the day. It's difficult to get inspired to do much with all the dust, odor, and noise going on in the stairwell and upstairs bathroom. The worker will not be here tomorrow, though, so I hope to make a batch of jelly.
The worker will be back Monday, though, to begin painting the areas. So Hubbie unpacked the cans of paint we bought a few weeks ago, and in so doing learned that the woman who mixed the paints miscued and mixed too much for the kitchen, and too little for the stairwell.
The paint, bought on sale (but still expensive), is stated to be non-returnable. But since it is the store clerk's fault that we got the wrong amounts, Hubbie is going to pack it back into the box, and take it, along with the measurement specifications given to us by the woman who estimated what would be needed for each room, back to the store and insist that the error be corrected.
It has just been one stumbling block after another with this project!
Tomorrow, the worker will be taking his wife to the capital city to learn the results of recent tests concerning her autoimmune disease, and what can be done to help her. Before he left this evening, I gave him a jar of strawberry jam to take to his wife. I know she's going through a difficult time, so I hope the jam will help cheer her a little.
For supper, I heated soups (chicken noodle and split pea), which we had with bran muffins. Hubbie accompanied Mother home afterward, and then he and I watched one-hour shows on TV.
I was such a slug today...hope I'm more productive tomorrow.

Wednesday, Oct. 16
Up at 6 a.m. so I could get ready to go to water aerobics. It was a bit drizzly and cool this morning, but the pool was pleasantly warm. Sixteen of us attended, and we all agreed that it felt good to get back to aerobics after being away from it for over a week.
Back home afterward, I warmed up with a couple of cups of coffee, and then got ready for the day in the guest bathroom downstairs. It's a smaller space than the bathroom upstairs, of course, so I had trouble managing all my grooming and hygiene supplies. There's not much space on the sink/vanity for all my stuff, and Hubbie's. So we're using totes and travel kits to contain everything. It's a little living out of a suitcase on an extended trip.
When I got home, the worker was already here and hard at work. Today, he cut the affected section out of the upstairs bathroom floor, which meant using a lot of very loud electric tools. Add to that the fact that the tree trimming guys came today also, and they made a lot of noise sawing limbs off trees outside.
This time, they did not get stuck in the yard like they did last Tuesday, when they trimmed limbs off of trees that would impede a truck delivering a new shed on Friday. Hubbie had to hook our truck to the tree trimmer's truck and pull it out of the yard. We are now left with two deep tires ruts in the yard.
Once I was ready for the day, Mother and I watched Monday night's episode of "Dancing With the Stars." In the meantime, Hubbie went to the grocery store and picked up deli meats and cheese, and a loaf of rye bread for lunch. We invited the worker to join us again. He enjoyed a couple of ham sandwiches on wheat bread, with pepper Jack cheese, chips and salsa, and a couple of brownies. Mother had a half of a turkey with baby Swiss cheese, and Hubbie and I had ham and Swiss on Rye. We had chips and brownies, too.
After lunch, Mother helped make a pot of split pea soup...she sorted the peas and diced onions, carrots, and banana peppers. I washed the peas, and added the veggies, along with chicken and beef broths, and spices...pepper, no salt seasoning, paprika, and garlic powder. I let the soup simmer for a couple of hours. Later, Mother helped me make a batch of bran muffins.
The worker left around 4 p.m., and by 5 p.m., the tree trimmers were done. Shortly afterward, we sat down to supper. Hubbie accompanied Mother home afterward, and then he and I watched the final episodes of "One Tree Hill."

Tuesday, Oct. 15
Up at 6 a.m. to get dressed and ready for the guy to come around 8:30 to work on the stairwell and upstairs bathroom. Mother opted to stay home today, since it was a really rainy day.The guy arrived at 9 a.m. and began work right away.
Around 10:30, I decided to make a recipe of chicken noodle soup, and a batch of brownies, for lunch, and I invited the painter to stay since it was such a nasty day. He agreed.
When the soup was ready, Hubbie took a bowl of it and a brownie to Mother for her lunch. I served the soup with a choice of cheeses, or peanut butter, and crackers. The painter ate two bowls of it, as well as two brownies, so I guess he liked it.
In asking the guy about his family, I learned his wife has some sort of autoimmune disorder that requires her to be in a wheelchair much of the time. She has an appointment in the capital city on Friday, so the painter will not be here that day.
He was very chatty at lunch, though, regaling us with stories of his grandfather, who apparently was a real scrapper.
After lunch, he left for a little while to meet with a woman who wants him to do some work at her house, but he returned around 2:30 and finished what he was going to do today.
Unfortunately, while working in the bathroom, he discovered that the leak that was repaired had damaged the floor under the sinks and cabinets. He discovered it because the floor in front of the cabinets is warped, indicating that the particle board was wet. After further exploration with a special instrument, he found that the plywood is wet and beginning to mold.
This means we will need to have the cabinet and two-sink marble top removed so the floor can be fixed. So we are looking at buying a new cabinet/sink unit, as well as new vinyl floor covering. Also, the toilet will need to be replaced (it was leaking the other day).
When we started this project, I didn't dream we'd run into all this! All I wanted to do was replace the wallpaper with paint.
After lunch, around 2 p.m., Hubbie and I went to the Extension Services office, where the Master Gardeners were holding a short training program on how to submit individual reports to the state. Naturally, since Hubbie is not as adept at computers as I am (not that I'm all that great), it was necessary that I take the training. In about thirty minutes, I was able to record and submit about six months of information, and now I know how to do it from home.
Back home, I later heated leftovers for supper and took a plate of them to Mother. The painter left around 5:30, and then Hubbie and I sat down to eat.
At 7:30, we went to the college to attend a lecture by an opinion columnist from the state newspaper. The columnist is Democrat leaning, and made no bones about it, so his talk inspired some interesting questions from the audience.
He also spoke about the future of newspapers. He's convinced some, like our state paper, will not only survive, but will thrive. He doesn't believe that the digital age means the demise of print, and students who attended the lecture agreed. They said they prefer print textbooks and newspapers over computers.
I like both mediums, and I move between the two depending on my mood. I think there is a place for both. Print will survive just as movies and radio survived after predictions they would die in the face of television.
Back home afterward, we finished the evening watching a couple of episodes of "One Tree Hill."

Monday, Oct. 14
Today is Columbus Day, and ordinarily we would hang the flag on well house, but the weather looked iffy, so we decided not to.
Up at 6 a.m., so Hubbie could get ready to go with the Master Gardeners to the capital city for a tour of a celebrity's farm. I showered and dressed, because I expected the guy who was to work on the stairwell and upstairs bathroom to arrive around 8:30.
Hubbie left home at 7:30, and though I was dressed, I decided to do stair stepping for a few minutes before the painter arrived. I finished a session and began exercising with resistance bands and weights when the painter called. He was delayed, but would arrive around 9:30.
Before he got here, I accompanied Mother to our house. After the guy arrived, I got frozen Reliance grapes out of the freezer and thawed them in water so I could simmer them in water and then squeeze them for juice.
The grapes didn't yield enough juice for a recipe of jelly, so I'll buy a bottle of white grape juice to go with it, then try to make the jelly maybe Saturday.
After I juiced the grapes, I called one of the scrapbook members to let her know we won't meet this week, but I will try to schedule another time in the next couple of weeks. She and I commiserated on home improvement projects. She has been having lots of problems with her house, in which her washing machine flooded her utility room, ruining the floor.
She got the room fixed, but only a few days ago, the machine leaked on the floor again. So she had to get the machine repaired, then deal with the wet indoor-outdoor carpet in that room. I'm not sure why she went with indoor-outdoor carpet. I think I would have chosen some other flooring.
She has also had living room carpet replaced recently, and with that, she had similar problems as we are having with the wallpaper removal/painting project....delays in getting workers to come on the days they say they will.
Not long this lady and I ended our conversation, one of ladies from my high school class called to tell me another classmate, a man, had suffered injuries in a car accident. He's on the mend, thank goodness, from a fractured sternum, caused by his seat belt.
His daughter, in the car with him at the time, suffered a broken knee (which was crushed to fragments) and wrist. These injuries occurred when a driver crossed the line into their lane, causing the accident. I need to either call this man or send him a "thinking of you" card.
My classmate was in a chatty mood today, so we talked of many things, including home improvement nightmares we've both experienced.
By this time, it was near noon, so I fixed omelets and toast for Mother and me. The worker didn't leave for lunch until around 1:30, and then he didn't return until around 3:30.
Mother and I decided to occupy our time this afternoon watching "Phantom of the Opera." When it was over, I called the other scrapbook club member, who was also chatty. Her story was about her Shih Tzu dog that suffered a mysterious injury. She noticed one morning that he just wasn't acting right, and after another day, she knew she needed to take him to a vet.
She and her daughter attempted to crate the dog. But it was having none of it. Neither did it cooperate in getting into the car. She finally had to request that vet come to their house to look at the dog. This was a costly request, but when the vet examined the dog, he thought the animal needed to be transported to the vet's for an X-ray.
It was determined that the dog had suffered an internal injury in the back, sustained he and the dog's owner decided, from the dog falling asleep while on the back of a love seat, and then tumbling, back first, onto the floor.
The injury required that the dog be crated and medicated for two weeks. Fortunately, he is now back to his old self again.
Wow! Whatever the painter used (some sort of sealer) on the walls of the stairwell and bathroom this afternoon had such a strong odor that it gagged Mother and me, though it seemed not to bother the painter at all. I finally had to prop the front door open with a chair to let some of the fumes out. He has to put another coat of on the walls tomorrow. I'm not looking forward to it.
Around 4:30, I put leftovers in the oven for supper, and started a pan of corn-on-the-cob cooking. Hubbie had called earlier in the day and thought he would be home somewhere around 5 or 6 p.m. Turned out he got home just after 6:30. By that time, Mother and I had already eaten, but I kept supper warm until he arrived.
Mother stayed around for a while and watched a couple of TV shows, then was ready to go home about 8 p.m. Hubbie accompanied her. Then he and I watched episodes of "One Tree Hill."

Sunday, Oct. 13
Slept late, until around 8 a.m. Skipped my exercises and went ahead and got dressed. After breakfast, Hubbie accompanied Mother to our house. I had nothing scheduled for the day, so we watched the musical movie, "Cats."
Around 10:30, Hubbie washed sweet potatoes, and split butternut squash. I seasoned the squash with margarine and brown sugar, and then put the vegetables in the oven.
Lunch was ready by noon. We had the sweet potatoes and squash with the Chinese beets and the green beans I prepared yesterday. It was a very satisfying fall meal.
Afterward, Mother went to her jigsaw puzzle, Hubbie made a run to the WDCS, and I read the Sunday newspaper.
Mid-afternoon, Mother was ready to go home, and Hubbie accompanied her. Then we went to the college to walk around the lake four times, or the equivalent of a mile.
Back home, we watched episodes of "One Tree Hill."
It was a pleasant if unexciting day, but tomorrow will be a bit busier. The guy who is to work on the stairwell should be here around 8 a.m (fingers crossed). We'll need to be up really early, not only for that, but because Hubbie is scheduled to go with a group of Master Gardeners on a special tour in the capital city. Hope all goes well for both events.
Not sure what I'll do tomorrow, other than calling the scrapbook club members to cancel our meeting for next Thursday, since the house will probably be in chaos. Maybe I'll find something to do in the kitchen, if there's not a lot of dust from the stairwell.
