Saturday, April 19

Up around 7:30 this morning. After breakfast, Hubbie and I busied ourselves in the kitchen. I put a ham in the oven, and set a pan of eggs to boil. Hubbie peeled and sliced potatoes in the food processor, and then I started them boiling.

The potatoes are for making scalloped potatoes tomorrow. The eggs are for deviled eggs, obviously. While the potatoes and eggs cooked, Hubbie accompanied Mother to our house. Then he shredded carrots in the food processor, and Mother made carrot salad from them.

We didn't have enough golden raisins, so Hubbie made a run to the grocery store. He also bought cans of sliced pineapple for making a pineapple upside down cake, as well as on-sale fresh pineapples. While he was there, he picked up this week's free item...a container of Greek yogurt. There are now two of these in the fridge for Nephew.

When we finished doing what we could in the kitchen this morning, I finally got around to exercising. It was time for lunch after I finished. Mother had her usual Ramen noodle soup, Hubbie had the remainder of the Dragon Soup, and I had a helping of leftover spaghetti.

After lunch, I took the ham out of the oven and set it out to cool. Then Mother and I made the pineapple upside down cake. She arranged the pineapple and maraschino cherries on top of the butter and brown sugar, while I mixed the cake. Then she spread the batter on the pineapples, and I put the cake in the oven.

Mother went to her jigsaw puzzle then, and I spruced the kitchen, took the cake out of the oven when it was done, and sliced the ham for the refrigerator.

After that, I was finally ready to go upstairs to shower and dress. By now, it was 2 p.m. While I was upstairs, I ironed a tablecloth. Back downstairs, I gathered the dishes and glassware for the table, and did other things related to Easter dinner tomorrow.

Later, we had a supper of ham, macaroni salad, and carrot salad, with slices of rye bread. Mother stayed around after supper to watch a romance movie from the Hallmark Channel that I'd recorded on DVR.  She was ready to go home after that, so Hubbie accompanied her.

Then we watched episodes of "Bones," until around 8:30, when it was time for me to go to Mother's house to administer her eye medication. To do this, I have to force her eyelids open, and believe me, she can really clamp them shut!

Friday, April 18

Up around 6:30, but skipped my exercises after breakfast, so I could get dressed and ready to take Mother to meet a 9:40 appointment with the ophthalmologist.

We arrived at the clinic about 9:30, then had to sit and wait endlessly before we were called back to an exam room.

Mother remarked a couple of weeks ago that a film we were watching at the film fest was vignetted around the edges. She asked if we noticed it. We did not. So today, an assistant gave her an eye test that involved looking at a target, then pressing a button when she saw flashes around the edge. After this test, we were moved to another exam room.

The assistant also gave her the routine eye chart and glaucoma tests. Then we sat in this room for a while before the doctor arrived. He examined Mother's eyes, and then discussed the results of the target test.

He said it indicated she might have glaucoma, though this test sometimes gives false/positive results. So he is not completely convinced she has the disease. But he prescribed eye drops that she is to use each night before bed.

She's to do this for two months, then return for another exam. At that time, he will perform a test that gives more accurate results. In the meantime, the eye drops will stop progression of the disease, if she does have glaucoma. Glaucoma cannot be cured, but it can be managed.

I will need to be the one to go to Mother's house each night and administer the medication, since she won't be able to do it for herself. It's not easy to put eye drops in Mother's eyes, since she tends to squeeze her eyes shut whenever anyone gets near them. I'll have to force her eyelids open.

Today at the clinic, the assistant could not make Mother lean her head into a strap for a glaucoma test, so I had to hold her head against it to keep her from jerking back.

It was noon before we left the clinic. At home, Hubbie had heated soups for lunch, but Mother and I didn't want them, since this is Good Friday, and we wanted meatless meals. So I made scrambled eggs and toast for us, and Hubbie had the Dragon Soup.

After lunch, Mother relaxed and watched TV, while Hubbie and I ran errands...to the pharmacy to drop off Mother's prescription, to the greeting card shop to pick up cards for Mother, back to the pharmacy to pick up the prescription, to a department store so I could see if there was anything I could apply a $10 off $25 purchase to (found two blouses on the clearance rack), and to the WDCS to shop for Mother and pick up a few groceries.

Back home, I relaxed for a little while, then began supper preparations. Mother helped by fixing salads and garlic bread to go with leftover spaghetti.

Mother was ready to go home shortly after supper, so Hubbie accompanied her. Then he and I watched TV, including the cliffhanger season finale of "Scandal," and episodes of "Bones."

Thursday, April 17

Up at 6:30 this morning to get ready to drive our scrapbook club members to another town about 45 minutes away to browse a large flea market, a discount store, and to have lunch at a buffet restaurant.

The other two ladies arrived just before 9 a.m., and we headed out. Arrived at the flea market around 10 a.m., and spent about an hour an a half there. There was a world of stuff in this large store, but all I found that I wanted was a magazine on card making. One of the ladies bought a craft book, but the other lady, and Mother, found nothing they wanted.

From there, we went to the restaurant. We all ate too much, as we usually do when we go to a buffet restaurant.

Before coming home, we stopped at a large discount store, where we found a lot of scrapbook/card making supplies in a clearance area. The items were 90% off, so they ranged in price from as little as three cents up to twenty cents. I also bought a movie DVD, some dish towels, and makeup remover.

Around 3 p.m., we were ready to head home. We arrived just after 4 p.m. It was a beautiful spring day, and we thoroughly enjoyed this outing.

While we were gone, Hubbie attended a Master Gardener program on pruning roses and crape myrtles. For lunch, he went to a local fast food restaurant.

After lunch, he ran errands...to the library to re-check a DVD on my card, to the cable company store to get a new remote (the old one just wouldn't catch the cable box signal, even when we changed the batteries), and to the newspaper office to drop off this week's word search puzzle contest.

He was in the driveway when we got home, ready to load our lawn mower on a trailer to be taken to the shop for repair (the lawn mower, not the trailer). I can't remember a summer when our mower was ever ready to go at mowing time. I guess it gets cranky after sitting all winter in the garage without being started. The truck and trailer pulled into the driveway right behind the van, but the driver left room for the other ladies to exit in their car.

Mother was ready to go home as soon as we arrived, so I accompanied her. Later, I sent soup, slices of rye bread, and a slice of angel food cake for her supper.

Hubbie and I weren't ready for supper until later in the evening, and we had soup, too. Then we watched episodes of "Bones."

Wednesday, April 16

Up around 7:30 this morning, and did stair stepping, resistance band, and weights exercises after breakfast, since I couldn't go to water aerobics. My thumb is still as wonky as ever. I hope I'm not looking at surgery.

Once I was ready for the day, I didn't accomplish much for the morning, except washing a couple of loads of laundry. The three of us were invited to attend a noon luncheon honoring volunteers at the Caring Hands Hospice office, and since we were dressed for the event, we didn't want to do anything to get dirty.

There was only one other person at the office when we arrived, but soon others arrived, and we lined up for a potluck lunch, provided by the staff of Caring Hands. It was yummy...chicken/rice casserole from a local restaurant, spinach lasagna, a Mexican casserole, fresh greens and fruit salad with sesame seeds and a sweet dressing, green beans, a corn dish, ham and beans, and cornbread, cheese dip and corn chips, and rolls.

Desserts included chocolate pie, some sort of deep dish chocolate concoction, peach pie, and Italian cream cheese cake. There was so much food that staff insisted that we take plates of it home for supper, and we did.

After we'd eaten, a staff member read a poem about the value of volunteers. Then another staff member presented gifts to each volunteers... $20 gift cards to a local steak house. We were all surprised and appreciative of this gesture. Before we left, a staff member snapped a group photo.

The woman who is coordinating the volunteers now asked Mother and me to provide more greeting cards. All kinds are needed...note cards, birthday cards, and sympathy cards. So we will begin making cards as soon as we have free days, sometime after Easter.

Back home afterward, Mother went to her jigsaw puzzle, while Hubbie and I ran errands...to the pharmacy to pick up prescriptions and last week's and this week's free items (a carton of Greek yogurt, and a 12-pack of lemon tea), to the literacy council office to purchase tickets for a charity bingo next week, to the greeting card shop to buy Jelly Belly candy for Mother for Easter, to the Chamber of Commerce to pick up a copy of the county's monthly slick magazine, and to the WDCS to buy a new land line phone and a toilet seat, as well groceries.

Back home, we watched the last of season three of "Bones." The DVDs of this show are due back to the library tomorrow. Hubbie can return season three and then re-check season four on my library card while he is running errands tomorrow.

Mother was ready to go home around 5 p.m., and Hubbie accompanied her. I sent helpings of the food we brought home for her to have for supper later.

Hubbie and I weren't ready to eat until around 7:30. We spent the evening watching season four episodes of "Bones."

Tuesday, April 15

Slept late this morning, until after 8 a.m., because I got up around 2 a.m. to observe the "blood moon," and try to get a snapshot of it. Because it was so cold and windy last night, I was in no mood to go outdoors and set up my tripod, so I settled for snapping a few shots through an upstairs window.

The result was a fuzzy image, but it did show the orange color of the moon as the Earth's shadow passed over it. The second of a tetrad of total lunar eclipses resulting in blood moons will occur on October 8. Maybe I can set up for a better shot then. If the weather cooperates.

There was a freeze warning last night, so Hubbie cut some of the tulips to bring inside, since he expected them to fall victim to the the weather. He tried to erect a tent over the flowers yesterday, but the wind kept whipping it away, so he decided the plants would just have to take their chances.

The tulips seemed to survive the night, but now there is a prediction for frost tonight, so we don't know if they will make it through another assault. Of course, they have been in glorious bloom for a couple of weeks and are nearing the end of their cycle anyway.

We are hoping this will be the last of the cold weather, because Hubbie is anxious to get the veggie garden started. He has put off planting until the risk of freeze and frost is at an end. Last year, he replanted three times and doesn't want to do that again.

Hubbie accompanied Mother to our house mid-morning, and she relaxed while I did stair stepping, resistance bands, and weights exercises. Before I went upstairs to get ready for the day, I gathered veggies for Mother to dice...onions, carrots, bell pepper, banana peppers, and mushrooms. I sauteed the veggies, along with spices...pepper, paprika, no-salt seasoning, garlic powder, oregano, basil, chili powder, parsley, and Rosemary...and added chicken broth and beef broth, and a quart of garden tomatoes from the freezer.

By the time I was showered and dressed, it was lunchtime. After lunch, a couple of guys from the plumbing service arrived to install a new sink and faucets in the downstairs bathroom. We want to remodel that room eventually, but not right away. First, we went to re-do the sun room.

We're looking at months of planning and engaging workers, because that's the way things work around here. I hate home improvement projects, which seem to tear up the house forever, but once we've decided to do one, I'm for getting right on it. But Hubbie likes to dwell on things endlessly before making a move.

After the plumbers left, we watched last night's episode of "Dancing With the Stars." It was around 4 p.m. by the time the show ended, so I finished the soup. Boiled some macaroni to add to it, and then added more broths and leftover veggies collected in a container in the freezer. Served the soup with warm garlic bread.

Mother was ready to go home afterward, so Hubbie accompanied her. Then he and I watched episodes of "Bones," on a DVD from the library.

Monday, April 14

Up around 7:30, but skipped going to water aerobics, since my right thumb is still in a splint. But I did do stair stepping, resistance bands, and weights exercises after breakfast. While I exercised, Hubbie accompanied Mother to our house, and she went to her jigsaw puzzle.

Once I was ready for the day, I did this and that until lunchtime, including calling the other members of the scrapbook club to make sure our trip to another town on Thursday is still on. It is. I'll be driving, of course.

After lunch, I intended to run errands, but Hubbie was a bit under the weather, and the temperature dropped, and it started raining, so I decided to stay home and make cards, instead.

I made an Easter card for Hubbie's sister, reciprocation for a St. Patrick's Day card she sent to us; and birthday cards for the two great-grandsons (I would have been lazy and bought a couple of cards if I'd gone shopping today). Turned out to be an entertaining afternoon.

Later, I started a pot of spaghetti sauce simmering, and Mother prepared salads and garlic bread. The spaghetti was very satisfying for supper.

Mother was ready to go home shortly after supper, since the temperature was continuing to drop, so Hubbie accompanied her.

Then he and I watched a few episodes of this season's "Mr. Selfridge," a Masterpiece Theater series on PBS that I'd recorded on DVR.

Sunday, April 13

Slept late, until around 8 a.m. Skipped my exercises, as usual on Sunday. Spent the morning in the usual Sunday routine, then put potatoes in the oven to bake for lunch.

Hubbie spent his time in the yard, fashioning a frame for holding plastic over the tulips during a predicted freeze this week. He'll throw sheets over other tender vegetation during those freezing nights.

For lunch, Mother pattied turkey burger, which I fried and topped with cheese to be served on buns. Turkey burgers and baked potatoes was an unusual Sunday lunch. This is a meal usually reserved for Saturday. But last night, we had egg salad sandwiches, which was leftover from Friday. Tomorrow, we'll have spaghetti, which I'd originally planned for today. Plans change according to our activities.

After lunch, around 1:30, we went to the museum for a program about a floating photography studio of the early to mid-1900s. These studios were common in that era. They were boats on which photographers and their families lived, and were set up with a photo studio and darkroom.

Today's program included a talk by the man who mounted the exhibit of photos by a couple who operated one of those floating studios. A descendant  (present today) of the couple possessed thousands of glass plate negatives and photos from the time, which she allowed a current photographer to digitize and mount for an exhibit.

Our museum is one of the venues that is displaying this traveling exhibit. As a photographer, I was very interested in this program and exhibit, which included a film about the process of selecting photos, and processing them for display.

The exhibit also includes a replica of the original floating studio. It features tiny rooms complete with furniture, camera equipment, and darkroom (with a red safety light for film developing). Mother especially enjoyed looking into the small windows and doors to the lighted interior of the boat to see tables and chairs, dishes, bed, a work desk with scissors and tiny photos, etc.

The exhibit main room housed a large array of photos, including large panels of enlarged prints. Before we went into the exhibit, the speaker said that often folks don't take time to read the information panels at museums. So today, he would give prints of the photos to anyone he caught reading the panels.

Mother and I read every panel, but weren't caught doing it, so we didn't get a print. However, Hubbie did get caught, so he received one of two small copies of prints of African-American women (which he gave to Mother). We were told earlier that the photographer (a woman) was color blind, even in a day when blacks were discriminated against. So there is a number of striking photos of African-Americans in the exhibit.

In the exhibit room there was a "studio" setup similar to the one on the floating studio. It included a balcony painted panel and a wicker chair from the studio. Anyone could have their picture taken in this area, so Mother and I sat for a "portrait." I don't know what will happen to these photos. There was no mention of our receiving them, though we were allowed to view them  in black and white on the digital camera.

Surprisingly, there were no refreshments at the event today...maybe because the crowd (maybe 50 people) was too big. So on the way home, we stopped for a frosted ice cream treat, which tasted good on this warm afternoon.

At home, I accompanied Mother to her house. Earlier, I sent the rest of her lunch to her house to have for supper (half a turkey cheeseburger, and half a baked potato).

Tonight, Hubbie and I watched one-hour shows from the DVR, in an effort to eliminate what I saved there, because we might need to get a new cable box, since this one continues to show "to be announced" in the menu.
