Saturday, Nov. 27

Up at 7 a.m., and did a treadmill session and resistance exercises after breakfast. While I exercised, Hubbie took the cat to the vet to have her stitches removed.

Sis called on the intercom just as I was finishing my exercises to let me know that Niece was coming for a visit and was about an hour away. I was dressed and ready by the time she arrived.

We visited for the rest of the morning, while Mother and Sis finished a jigsaw puzzle.

After a soup and sandwich lunch, we played Michigan Rummy until around 3 p.m., when it was time for Niece to leave.

Later, after a supper of more Thanksgiving leftovers, Mother and Sis set up another jigsaw puzzle, and Hubbie and I watched as our favorite college football team played to a tremendous win. The game began at 2:30, but I'd recorded it on the DVR, so we didn't start watching it until around 5:30.

Mother and Sis tired of the puzzle around 6:30 and decided to head to Mother's house. Following the game, Hubbie and I watched one-hour shows for the rest of the evening.

Friday, Nov. 26

Up at 7 a.m., but skipped my exercises to go to an 8 a.m. Black Friday sale at a music/video store, and to the store that has a sale every weekend. The clothing store actually opened at 4 a.m., but there was no way I was going to get out that early. I didn't need to, because I found what I wanted...at the advertised 50% off...after 8 a.m. I was primarily interested in intimate apparel for Mother. I also found a pretty animal print blouse and a brown on black jacket on the clearance rack for myself.

We were back home around 9 a.m., when we had a late breakfast. Mother and Sis came over shortly after that, and we spent the morning watching two versions of the Macy's Thanksgiving Day parade that I'd recorded on DVR yesterday.

While we did that, Hubbie went back out to shop the Black Friday sales at a home improvement store and at a farm store. He bought a ladder at one store, and a kerosene heater and bird seed at the other.

After lunch, Mother and Sis set up another jigsaw puzzle, while I cleared away the materials we used making crafts yesterday. In so doing, I noticed that one of the cats had knocked a booklet of crafts instructions from a table, and Shih Tzu had an accident on it. Earlier, she had an accident on the carpet in front of the TV. She has suffered today with diarrhea, maybe from eating too much chicken yesterday. Hubbie gave her a couple of doses of Pepto Bismol, hoping to cure the problem.

Later, I uploaded snapshots to a social network, and read a couple of newspaper editions...the state paper (we get these on holidays), and our local paper. Most of the stories revolved around Thanksgiving and Black Friday activities.

Supper, of course, was leftovers from yesterday's feast. All good again. Afterward, Mother and Sis continued working their jigsaw puzzle, and Hubbie and I watched our favorite college basketball team suffer a disappointing loss in overtime play.

Tnanksgiving Day

Happy Thanksgiving to all! By now, I'm sure everyone is as stuffed as the turkeys that were served.

We were up around 7 a.m. this morning, and Mother came over shortly after. Naturally, we spent the morning preparing the Thanksgiving feast.

Daughter was already here...she surprised me by arriving around 10:30 or 11 p.m. last night. If I hadn't dashed to shut the bathroom door, Hubbie would have been even more than surprised, since he was in the shower. One thing I don't like about the layout of our home is that the downstairs bathroom can be plainly seen from the den.

It was 8:30 this morning before we had breakfast, so we didn't sit down to lunch until around 1:30. Sis was late in arriving, getting here around 2:30. We had set aside helpings of all the food for her, which we heated in the microwave.

After lunch, once we had put away the food and cleaned the kitchen, Daughter and I spent time doing some crafts. Daughter made a mardi gras mask for her granddaughter. And then she made a fabric and marble necklace. We each also made gift bows. These were all things Mother and I had learned at the crafts extravaganza recently.

Mother and Sis worked on the jigsaw puzzle Mother had started yesterday.

Daughter stayed until 6 p.m. before leaving on the two-hour trip home. I sent lots of containers of Thanksgiving food with her, as well as materials and instructions for making more of the crafts she learned today. Granddaughter and Great-Granddaughter will enjoy these crafts.

After Mother and Sis finished the jigsaw puzzle, they went to Mother's house, and Hubbie and I lazed in front of TV.

Strange: the day began very warm, but around 10 a.m., there came an unusually bright flash of lightening with one of loudest thunder booms I've ever heard. We all just about jumped out of our skins. The temperature dropped drastically and suddenly, and a cold rain began, but there was no more lightening and thunder.

Wednesday, Nov. 24

Up around 7:30 and did a treadmill session and weights exercises after breakfast. Once I was ready for the day, I baked a cherry pie for tomorrow's feast.

Mother came over mid-morning, and since there were no other pressing chores to be done before tomorrow, we chose a jigsaw puzzle for her to work on. I figured if she occupied her mind with a puzzle, it would help keep her calm. She tends to get all excited and stressed on holidays. Playing with the puzzle seemed to work, because she was pretty laid back all day.

After a ham sandwich lunch (we tend to sample holiday foods the day before the feast), Hubbie and I ran errands. It was an uncommonly warm afternoon, and a fine mist lay over the hill leading up to the college, lending an air of mystery to the business building and its looming-skyward bell tower, and to the chapel, with it's spire jutting into the gray.

Our first stop was at a restaurant, where I picked up yeast rolls for tomorrow. The rolls were hot right out of the oven and smelled heavenly.

On the way to the restaurant, Hubbie discovered he'd forgotten his checkbook, so we swung back by home to get it. Since we were there, we sampled one of the hot yeast rolls...splitting one among us, since they were baked in three sections.

Then we went to the WDCS for a couple of grocery items and some cat food. We also bought a large slow cooker, since the one we ordered online didn't arrive. When the one we ordered finally does arrive, I guess we'll send it right back.

Back home, Mother continued to work on her puzzle, Hubbie watched TV, and I played on my office computer. An email from the Caring Hands Hospice director announced that the greeting card making group will meet on Dec. 8. So I decided to print some of my winter photos to use for the project.

Supper tonight was beef hash with eggs that Son and Daughter-in-Law gave us last weekend when they were here. The eggs were from chickens they raise, and they were delicious.

Mother went home after supper, and Hubbie and I relaxed in front of TV.

Tuesday, Nov. 23

Up late, around 7:30, and did a treadmill session and resistance exercises after breakfast. Once I was ready for the day, I spent an hour or so reading over the teacher's manual, in preparation to meet my student for the first time this evening.

After that, Hubbie and I went to a grocery store to shop for a few last-minute groceries to complete the Thanksgiving menu. It was time for lunch by the time we got back home.

This afternoon, Mother came over. She'd stayed home this morning to bake pumpkin pies. I put a ham in the oven, while Mother boiled eggs to devil on Thanksgiving Day. Did this and that for the rest of the afternoon.

For supper, we sampled the ham, which we had with a variety of leftover veggies.

At 5:30, I went to the college library to meet my student. On the way, I saw an oncoming car graze a deer as it ran onto the road. It's legs buckled and it staggered back to the side of the road. Since it was dark, I couldn't tell if it went down or ran into the woods.

I wanted to arrive at the library before the student got there, and I did. But I was surprised to find the library closed. A notice on the window said it would be closed from Nov. 23 to Nov. 28 for Thanksgiving break. Obviously, the Literacy Council director was unaware of this.

I immediately called her, and she tried to call the interpreter to relay a message to the student to either meet me at the church where the director's office is, or wait until Monday to begin lessons. She was unable to reach the interpreter, so she called the student directly, fearing she'd have trouble communicating with her, since she has very limited English-speaking skills.

Fortunately, an English-speaking youngster (the student's seven or eight-year-old son), was able to translate the conversation. The student opted to wait until Monday, because she doesn't know how to get to the church.

The director called me to relay this information. We laughed about how much of an adventure I am having already, and I haven't even met with a student yet! She commented that the comedy of errors in getting me started is unusual. Things usually run more smoothly, she insisted.

Before I left, I started an old DVD movie for Hubbie..."The Snows of Kilimanjaro," starring Gregory Peck, Susan Hayward, and Ava Gardner, all of whom have since died. The movie was, of course, still running when I returned at 6 p.m. It's a digitally remastered DVD, but is still a dark and fuzzy film. We've had the DVD for a few years, but never watched it. Hubbie bought it on a clearance rack for less than a dollar. The movie, based on the Hemingway novel, is good, but the picture quality is poor.

Later, we watched the finale of "Dancing with the Stars." The winner was the contestant that we were rooting for.

Monday, Nov. 22

Up around 7:30, and did a treadmill session and weights exercises after breakfast. After getting ready for the day, I called a local restaurant to order rolls for Thanksgiving, and took the chickens and broth out of the freezer to thaw in the fridge.

Spent the rest of the morning shopping. Started at the other store that has a sale every weekend, where I used four 25% off coupons to buy intimate apparel for Mother for Christmas. She has lost so much weight that her other apparel is baggy on her.

From there, I went to the WDCS to pick up a package of photos from the one-hour service. Then went to a shoe store to buy a couple more pairs of buy-one-get-one-half-price socks. This time, I bought a brown pair to try on at home to see if they are comfortable. They are.

A music and video shop was my next stop. Here, I bought an Andy Williams Christmas CD to use as one of Mother's 12-days-of-Christmas presents.

Came home after that to have lunch, where I found that an order from an online books/music/video site had arrived. Included was three cryptogram puzzle books for Mother for Christmas, and a Susan Boyle Christmas CD for myself.

Mother came over just after lunch to do a couple of things related to tonight's supper. She spent the morning at her house doing some pre-preparations for Thanksgiving. No matter how often I offer to do some of those tasks, she refuses help. I think she wants to feel indispensable (which she is, whether she takes on more than her share of the cooking, or not!).

After lunch, Hubbie and I ran errands...to the bank, to the jewelry store to pick up Hubbie's watch with new band, to the pharmacy, to the store that has a sale every weekend to spend a $10 coupon on a pair of under-leggings for myself, back to the shoe store to get several more pairs of socks, to the vet's office for dog vitamins, to the farm supply store for dog food, and finally to the Literacy Council office to exchange the level four books for the level one series.

The Literacy Council director apologized for the many changes to my schedule since I first became associated with the organization. I have yet to meet with a student, and already I've been assigned to two different ones, I've changed teacher's manuals from level one to level four and back to level one, and changed meeting places from a church, to an early learning center, and now to a college library, and changed times from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., to 5:45 p.m. to 6:45 p.m., and now to 6 p.m. until 7 p.m. Tomorrow night will be my first meeting with an assigned student.

Back home, I completed two gift packs of handmade lotions, etc., and then Mother and I sat down to watch "A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving," and "This is America, Charlie Brown: The Mayflower Voyagers," that I'd recorded on DVR.

Supper was beef hash with a choice of Lima beans or butter beans, and coleslaw. Mother went home afterward, and Hubbie and watched TV, including the first night of the "Dancing with the Stars" finale. The winner will be announced tomorrow night. We certainly know who should win, but we don't know who will win.

Sunday, Nov. 21

Slept late this morning and didn't get up until around 8 a.m. So I skipped my exercises. Mother came over after I was ready for the day, and we made bath salts and sea salt soother. I wanted to make hand cream, too, but I needed a bottle of baby lotion to complete the recipe.

So I spent the rest of the morning programming the DVR and doing other Sunday chores. For lunch, we had leftovers from yesterday's beef roast meal. Mother went home afterward, and Hubbie and I ran a couple of errands...to a dollar store to get a bottle of baby lotion, and the to the WDCS to shop for a few groceries. We didn't need much, but Mother had a fairly long list. From there, we stopped by a shoe store, where I bought a couple of pairs of black socks for mother as a 12-days-of-Christmas gift. Everything at the store was buy-one-get-one-half-price, so they were very inexpensive.

Back home, I made the hand cream and put it into pretty containers. Everything is ready now for making gift packs when needed. After that, I ordered one-hour photo prints of our trip to Branson, and of our family gathering yesterday.

Later, we went to a grocery store to take advantage of free Red Box movie rentals. We got "Prince of Persia," and "Letters to Juliet." I took "Letters to Juliet" to Mother to watch, while Hubbie and I watched the other one. Then we exchanged movies.

"Prince of Persia" must have been rented a lot, because it was somewhat damaged, causing it to skip and halt here and there. The movie is rated PG-13 for violence. And there's quite a bit of it for a Disney movie. We much preferred "Letters to Juliet," which is a PG-rated romantic comedy.
