Saturday, July 5

Up at 7:30 on this cool morning. Did stair stepping exercises after breakfast, but skipped the resistance band and weights, because they were in the spare bedroom, and I didn't want to disturb Daughter's sleep.

Hubbie accompanied Mother to our house around 9:30. None of us accomplished anything for the morning. Daughter woke around 11 a.m., and at noon we had sandwiches...a choice of chicken salad or egg salad...with chips.

Afterward, we decided to take advantage of the nice day and go on an outing. We went to a nearby state park to enjoy a view of the river, and go for a stroll on the brick walkways.

We wanted to tour the courthouse museum, but the interpreter was unable to open the door leading out to the wheelchair lift. Another staff member came and finally got the door open...seems that the facility had recently been renovated with new windows and a paint job to the window frames and doors, and the paint around the door sort of glued it shut. The door might as well have remained glued shut, because we discovered that the lift is out of order, anyway, and won't be repaired until September.

That meant that Mother could not get into the building. So she and Hubbie stayed in the gazebo while Daughter and I toured the museum. Daughter is the only one of us who hadn't toured the museum before.

We would have enjoyed the experience a whole lot more if the interpreter had stopped talking after her speech at the beginning of the tour, but she followed us around talking non-stop, not only about the history of the area and the exhibits displayed in various rooms, but about every aspect of her personal life. She absolutely wore our ears out.

At one point, Daughter asked a question, to which the interpreter responded, "I'll answer that in a minute. Just let me finish what I was talking about." She never did get around to answering the question.

We were glad that Hubbie and Mother were spared from having to listen to this woman. Someone needs to clue her in. I wonder if she is discouraging visits to the museum. She asked us to tell others about the museum, and while I think it's worth a visit, I'd hope that anyone who goes there doesn't get her as their guide.

After we got back home around 3 p.m., we watched a movie borrowed from the library, called "Evening." We'd all seen it before, but it was worth watching again.

Later, we had a supper of leftovers from yesterday, and then watched another movie...this was one I picked up at a big box store a few months ago. It's called, "Mrs. Pettigrew Lives for a Day." It's not an award winner, but it's cute, and we all enjoyed it.

After this movie, we indulged in peach cobbler and ice cream, then watched one-hour shows. I put drops in Mother's eyes while she was here.

Friday, July 4

Happy Independence Day to all! Happy Birthday to our great nation!

Slept well last night, and got up around 7:30. Skipped my exercises, though, and went ahead and got ready for the day.

Hubbie hung the flag on the well house, then after breakfast, he accompanied Mother to our house. She peeled boiled eggs, and we made egg salad. Then I washed squashes, and Mother cut them for the steamer later.

Then Mother went to her puzzle, and I cleaned the kitchen. Hubbie did things in the yard. We didn't do much else after that.

We thought Daughter would arrive before lunch, but she did not. In fact, she didn't come until close to suppertime.

After lunch, I made a peach cobbler, and set the steamer to cook the squashed, and new potatoes. Mother helped me put the marinated country ribs in a cooking bag, and I slathered them with barbecue sauce, and put them in the oven after the cobbler came out.

The food cooked for two hours, and was ready by 5 p.m. Daughter arrived at 4:30. The meat, squash, potatoes, and a side of sliced tomatoes was very tasty. But we were too full afterward to enjoy the cobbler. We decided to wait until after the fireworks show to indulge.

After supper, we watched the musical movie, "1776," an entertaining way of remembering how we achieved our independence. The movie wasn't done by the time we needed to go to the river to see the fireworks, but we finished it when we got back.

The fireworks were shot from the opposite side of the river from usual, so we found a place to park that afforded us a great view. It was a pretty spectacular show, and we really enjoyed it.

Back home afterward, we enjoyed the peach cobbler with ice cream. When the movie was done, Daughter accompanied her. Before she went, I put drops in her eyes.

Thursday, July 3

Slept well last night, and was up around 7:30. The first thing Hubbie discovered was that our coffee maker died. So he went to Mother's to make a pot.

I did stair stepping, resistance band, and weights exercises after breakfast. Hubbie accompanied Mother to our house around 9:30, and she went to her jigsaw puzzle.

Once I was ready for the day, I did this and that, including boiling a big pan of eggs for making egg salad for the weekend. While I did things here, Hubbie ran errands, including going to the WDCS to buy a new coffee maker.

He also stopped by a cafe' to pick up a carton of chicken salad, and to a grocery store to buy bread rounds. We had some of the salad for lunch.

After lunch, around 1:15, I took Mother to the ophthalmologist to meet a 1:40 appointment. The tech checked Mother's eyesight, which meant that she needed to put drops in her eyes. The tech discovered how difficult this is, but she finally managed to pry her lids open.

The doctor later commented that he thought Mother could crack walnuts with her eyelids. Both he and the tech are amazed at how strong her lids are, since nothing else about her is very strong.

Tests revealed that Mother does have glaucoma, so she will need to continue with prescribed eye drops for the rest of her life, which means I'll be prying her eyes open every night from now on. What fun.

It turned out that we should have renewed her prescription when it ran out a couple of days ago, since her pressure was up again today. But the prescription was written for only two months, and it was my understanding that she was to return to the clinic after that time to determine if the problem had improved. I didn't understand that we needed to call for a new prescription as soon as the current one expired.

I thought Mother was to have a test after two months of drops, which would determine if she actually had glaucoma. She had that test last week, while the doctor was on vacation. It was necessary for him to read the results when he returned, and report to us.

He realized that he hadn't made himself clear, but there was no harm done, he said. We'll just get her started on the drops again, and she'll go back every four months to be sure the glaucoma is under control.

As soon as we returned home, Hubbie went to the pharmacy to get Mother's prescription. While he was gone, Mother peeled the boiled eggs, and I prepared the country ribs to marinate overnight. Then we watched TV until time to go to a local restaurant for supper.

I didn't have a plan for cooking at home tonight. I didn't want to prepare a big meal that would yield a bunch of leftovers, since we'll be fixing a lot of food over the holiday weekend. Mother and I had gift cards for the restaurant we went to, given to us as a thank you from Caring Hands. We were saving them for just such a time as this. We used one tonight, and saved the other for another time.

Just down the highway from the restaurant, near the river bridge, traffic was stopped, and police car blue lights were flashing. A large truck was sideways in the road, but we couldn't tell if there'd been an accident, or if the truck was just stalled.

For supper, Mother and I had Hawaiian chicken, with sweet potato fries, and Hubbie opted for catfish and French fries. He and I ate all our food, but we brought home part of Mother's for another time.

Back home, Mother was ready to go home, so I accompanied her. Then Hubbie and I watched TV, as usual, including a murder mystery series from the PBS channel that I'd recorded on DVR.

The weather for July, is very cool. This morning's temp was only in the high 50s. This evening was very pleasant, with little humidity. Both Mother and I needed light jackets in the restaurant, which was very chilly. I'm thinking jeans and jackets will be in order for watching the fireworks tomorrow night.

Wednesday, July 2

Today is Great-Grandson's birthday. Happy Birthday, Great-Grandson!

Had another one of those nights...difficulty falling asleep, then being rudely awakened when the clock radio blared gospel music at 12:15 a.m. It was a long time before I got back to sleep again. And then when the alarm should have gone off at 6 a.m., it did not. At 6:40, Hubbie poked me awake, but it was too late to get ready for water aerobics by then. So we stayed in bed until around 8 a.m.

I did stair stepping, resistance band, and weights exercises after breakfast, while Hubbie got ready to go for a dental appointment. He accompanied Mother to our house before he went to the dentist.

After Hubbie got back and I was ready for the day, we went to the farmer's market. It was open today, thank goodness, so I was able to get some large slicing tomatoes, some small tender yellow squash, and green beans.

I used one of the tomatoes to make BLT sandwiches for Hubbie's and my lunch. Mother opted for leftover macaroni and cheese, and a slice of rye bread.

After lunch, Mother went to her jigsaw puzzle, and Hubbie and I went to a nearby town to look at laptop computers. I found one suited to my needs, and the owner of the store moved my photos and documents from my old computer to the new one, downloaded an anti-virus program, Microsoft Office Excel, and all the other things necessary to operating the system right away. He did not add a charge to the price of the computer for this service, since we are good customers of the store.

We've known this man for a number of years, but only today discovered he's on the police force of the town. He doesn't work full time as an officer. But today he was wearing a badge and a gun on his belt, which prompted us to quiz him.

Since it was going to take about an hour to prepare the laptop, we decided to visit roadside vendors in the town to see if I could find some small zucchini squash. I did. We also picked up two large, sweet cantaloupes at one stand. All this produce was grown on farms near the town.

Then we went to a drive-in fast food restaurant to get sundaes. I got hot fudge, and Hubbie got strawberry.

Back at the store, we only had to wait a few minutes more before my laptop was ready to go. We were at home by 3 p.m.

Spent the rest of the afternoon until time to prepare supper playing with the new laptop, and reading newspapers. Supper tonight was leftovers from last night and more baked potatoes, along with slices of French bread. Dessert, of course, was cantaloupe.

Mother was ready to go home shortly after supper, so Hubbie accompanied her. Then he and I watched one-hour shows on TV.

Tuesday, July 1

The first day of July...what I consider the beginning of summer. The temperature soared, and the humidity was so thick I felt like I needed to cut my way through it with a machete.

I'm in one of those spells when I either have trouble going to sleep, or I wake up in the wee hours of the morning and can't go back to sleep. Today , I awoke at 4:30, and lay there until Hubbie got up at 7:30.

I did stair stepping, resistance band, and weights exercises after breakfast, though. Hubbie accompanied Mother to our house around 9:30, and she tore down and boxed a bunch of jigsaw puzzles that had been accumulating on the spare room bed. I needed that bed cleared for Daughter, who is coming for a holiday visit this weekend.

Did this and that around the house until noon, including purging a closet of video cassettes to make room for photo albums. I have many, many now useless video cassettes that I don't know how to get rid of. For now, they'll be housed in the shed.

After a lunch of leftovers, I finally got out of my exercise clothes and into decent clothes for running errands. Mother went to her puzzle, while Hubbie and I went to town.

We went first to the flooring warehouse down the road..the one damaged by the tornado..to look at tile for the sunroom. I saw a pattern I like, but we are not ready to purchase yet.

From there we stopped by the bank, and then swung by the farmer's market where, unfortunately, there were no vendors today. We'll try again tomorrow.

While we were in the area, though, we drove to where the bridge washed out in the April storms. It's on the road that runs alongside the riverside park. Road workers were there today building a new bridge, which our local newspaper reported they hope to finish in time for this weekend's July 4 festivities. It'll certainly be a traffic nightmare if they don't.

Our last stop was the WDCS for a few groceries for us, and some household items for Mother. Too bad I didn't think to check my baking potato supply, because soon after we got back home, Hubbie had to turn around and go to the nearest grocery store to get a bag of them.

At the WDCS, we hoped to get a refund for a carton of cottage cheese we bought yesterday that I discovered at home had been tampered with...the plastic seal had been peeled back as though someone had sampled it. Yuk.

But the store clerk said we needed to bring the carton in. Couldn't do that since we had already disposed of it. In the past, we've been told not to bring food items back to the store. I can't keep up with their changing policies.

Later, at home, Mother and I prepared beef and veggies for supper. She sliced bell peppers, onions, and mushrooms, and then she and I cut beef into strips. I seasoned and sauteed the beef and veggies, then added beef broth and let it simmer for a while.

Meanwhile, Hubbie made me nervous trying to shut the power off in the downstairs bathroom, and then change a light bulb that broke off and was hanging precariously in its metal rim. It's dark as pitch in that room, so he had to use both our emergency lamp and a flashlight to see that light fixture in the ceiling. Even then, the bulb smashed to the floor. And the rim was stuck in the socket, so it was hard to remove. But he finally succeeded
and got down off that ladder.

Some days don't run smoothly, and today was one of those. I opened a can of chicken broth instead of beef broth before I realized my mistake. Then, around 4 p.m., I discovered that the potatoes Hubbie had scrubbed, had never made it to the oven. So supper was delayed an hour while they baked.

I'll blame lack of sleep on my errors. Or maybe it was the call from our friend at the computer store telling me it would take a couple of hundred dollars to repair my outdated laptop, and he doesn't think it's worth it. I don't think so, either. So I'll be making a trip to the store tomorrow to look for a new one.

Right after supper, a thunderstorm cropped up, which knocked cable services out. Thankfully, we didn't lose power, though. So I ran a movie on DVD borrowed from the library. It's titled, "Fern Hill," a family film about four adolescent boys who set out to locate the plane that one boy's father died in eight years earlier.

The storm blew over by the time the movie ended, so Hubbie accompanied Mother to her house. Then we watched one-hour shows recorded on DVR.

Monday, June 30

Last day of June, and boy was it a steamy one. We were up at 6 a.m., and I got ready for water aerobics, except for putting my swimsuit on. Before breakfast, I got a tummy ache. Nothing serious, but with all the rumbling, I wasn't sure what was coming next, so I figured it was prudent to stay home.

Later, I messaged one of the aerobics members to let her know why I hadn't attended. She said only 13 people showed up today.

I did go ahead and do stair stepping, resistance band, and weights exercises after breakfast, though.

Hubbie accompanied Mother to our house around 9:30. She was dressed to go out. Seems she got confused about what day she is to go to her eye doctor, because she thought this was June 23, instead of June 30.

She asked me to make a list of July events so she could record them on her calendar, but even with the list and calendar, she got confused. I suggested she forget both of them and just let me tell her what is going on day-by-day.

Spent the rest of the morning doing things like calling the scrapbook members to get their 2013-14 volunteer hours, making a weekly menu, filling out a survey form for the library, and sending money and ticket stubs to my alma mater high school for chances at winning a vehicle.

After lunch, Hubbie and I ran errands...to the library, to the post office, to the pharmacy, to a home improvement store, and to the WDCS.

Back home, I did this and that around the house, while Hubbie removed things from the sunroom to clear it for putting down a new floor.

Later, for supper, we had leftover lasagna, tomatoes topped with cottage cheese, and French bread. Mother was ready to go home after that, and Hubbie accompanied her.

I made a recipe of fruited Jell-o, using the quick set method, and when it was ready, I took a serving of it to Mother. I used the last of her eye drops last night, so we didn't need to go through that ordeal tonight, thank goodness.

I might have to visit each evening, anyway, because Mother's cat has begun to look forward to seeing me. She perks up, purrs at being petted, and leans against me every night.

At home, Hubbie and I watched TV...one-hour shows recorded on DVD.

Note: we found out what one of the remaining gifts was at yesterday's birthday party...a huge inflatable wading pool with slide. Hubbie said he was embarrassed by the overindulgence shown to this child.

His niece's home looks like it's outfitted as a daycare center. One family member even said as much. The yard, the deck, and every room in the house is loaded up with both small and huge indoor and outdoor toys.

To the child's credit, though, she charmed us all when, as she opened each gift, she enthusiastically said, "I love it! Thank you!"

Sunday, June 29

Spent a restless night, thanks to thunderstorms, and needing to get up a couple of times to satisfy calls of nature.

Hubbie' s night was just as restless, so we got up around 6:30. We didn't accomplish anything for the morning except our usual Sunday routine. Hubbie accompanied Mother to our house around 9:30.

We decided to watch a movie before lunch...a "Murder She Wrote" full length feature. Lunch was simple..Just leftover chicken spaghetti, with a side of English peas.

Mother was ready to go home afterward, since Hubbie and I planned to go to his great-niece's birthday party at 2 p.m.

The theme for this year's party was the 4th of July.  Last year's lemonade stand became a fireworks stand this year. Red, white, and blue decorations were everywhere. Various relatives dressed in patriotic colors. I didn't get the memo about that, but I did wear white crop pants and a red and pink check blouse.

All the refreshments were iced in red, white, and blue or had sprinkles in those colors. I stuck with a chocolate cupcake and water.

The two-year-old honoree received all sorts of gifts, including a large wooden playhouse that features a kitchen sink and stove, window boxes, and picnic benches, a picnic table with umbrella, a cabana, a crib and high chair for her dolls, several dolls, a talking Elmo, a doctor doll that talks, a monogrammed beach towel, and several other gifts she hadn't gotten around to opening by the time we were ready to leave.

About 25 family members attended. The party began at 2 p.m., and was still going when we left at 5:30.

Before we left, Niece wanted to get a snapshot of Hubbie and me seated at the fireworks stand. All was fine until I stood up, whereupon I cracked my head on a wooden cross piece. This is the second time I've bumped my head on Great-Niece's play things. The first time was on the cross piece of her wooden swing set.

We were pooped by the time we got home, though we didn't do anything strenuous...just all the activity, I guess.

Later, I was ready to eat something more substantial than sweets. So we had scrambled eggs and toast.

Around 8:30, I went over to Mother's house and put drops in her eyes. Then Hubbie and I watched murder mystery shows on TV for the evening.
