Saturday, June 9

Slept late, until nearly 8 a.m. After breakfast, Hubbie accompanied Mother to our house, where she sliced and diced various veggies for a chef's salad lunch, and to use with steak strips for tomorrow's lunch. While she worked on that, I did stair stepping, resistance bands, and weights exercises.

Once I was ready for the day, Mother and I relaxed and watched a scary movie on the LMN channel: this 2005 horror film, called "Hide and Seek, stars Robert De Nero and Dakota Fanning, and gets mixed reviews. It's not an award-winner, but it's entertaining enough, and has a twist.

After lunch, Mother and I made another four quarts of strawberry jam, and then Hubbie and I shopped for groceries at the WDCS for ourselves and Mother. Any day is bad for shopping at that store, but Saturday is particularly bad. I don't know why we always end up needing to go there on Saturdays. Poor planning, I guess.

Back home, I didn't do much until suppertime, when I fixed turkey burgers and macaroni and cheese for supper, which Mother enjoyed a lot. After supper, we watched a 2009 movie..."Closed for the Winter." The story takes place in Australia, where a young girl mysteriously disappears while she and her younger sister are on the beach. The girl goes sunbathing behind a dune, and then the younger sister can't find her.

Twenty years later, the mother is psychologically damaged as she cuts out and scrapbooks newspaper articles about various tragedies. Every room of the house is stacked high with newspapers. The younger sister lives with her mother, and tries to maintain a relationship with a man, but she has difficulty moving past the sister's disappearnce. Dark secrets must be revealed before she can get on with her life.

After the movie, I accompanied Mother to her house, and then toured the gardens with Hubbie. What a pleasant evening! Later, we continued watching TV...a couple of one-hour shows...until bedtime.

Friday, June 8

Up at 6:30 this morning to get ready to go to water aerobics. Since the morning was so cool, I enjoyed the pleasant walk to the gym from the parking lot.

I was amazed at how full the pool was today. I've never seen the water that high before.

Funny: as I entered the pool, one of the ladies commented: "I think the water is still rising. It looks like it got higher as you were getting in."

"What?!!" I exclaimed. "I'm bigger than I want to be, but I don't think I can visibly displace water in an olympic-size pool!" I laughed.

She apologized and assured me she didn't mean it that way. But later, toward the end of the session, when the lady left a little early, I couldn't resest calling out: "The water really went down when you got out!"

Back home, Hubbie accompanied Mother to our house, and we goofed off the rest of the morning. Mother didn't have a lot of energy today, and didn't want to work on her jigsaw puzzle, so we drank coffee and watched morning shows on TV. It was 11 a.m. before I finally went upstairs to get ready for the day.

After PB&J sandwiches for lunch, Hubbie went out to work in the yard, and Mother and I made another batch of strawberry jam. We filled eight half-pint jars this time, which we'll use as token gifts for the holidays.

Didn't do anything else of importance for the afternoon. Later, Mother sliced tomatoes and Vidalia onions for our supper of bacon/lettuce/tomato/Vidalia onion sandwiches, served with noodles and creamed onions, squash, and green beans. Mother really loves the homegrown green beans, so I hope our garden produces more.

After supper, I accompanied Mother to her house, and when I got back, I made a recipe of fruited Jell-o. Then Hubbie and I spent the evening watching TV, as usual. When the Jell-o was ready, I took a helping of it to Mother. Whenever I make snacks, I take portions to her. Last night, it was trail mix, which was a big hit with her. She must have had the "munchies," like us.

Our TV fare included a 2010 LMN movie called, "Bond of Silence." Based on a true story, a lawyer and well-known tri-athlete dies of what appears at first to be a heart attack when he tries to break up a raucous party at a neighbor's house. When his wife learns her husband actually died from being kicked in the head, severing an artery in the back of his head, and she learns who the murderer is, she forgives him, and even comforts him.

We followed that with the 2002 movie, "Confessions of a Dangerous Mind," starring Sam Rockwell, George Clooney, and Drew Barrymore. The film is based on the autobiographical life of Chuck Barris, TV producer of "The Dating Game," "The Newlywed Show," "The Gong Show," etc. He also claims to have once been a hitman for the CIA, though according to Wikipedia, the CIA denies that he ever worked for them. Language and nudity in this movie.

Thursday, June 7

Up around 7:30 on this pleasantly mild morning. After breakfast, I did a treadmill and resistance bands session. Hubbie accompanied Mother to our house around 10 a.m., where she continued working on her jigsaw puzzle.

Once I was ready for the day, I did this and that around the house, while Hubbie worked in the yard until lunchtime. After lunch, I completed a monthly report for the Literacy Council, and then ran errands before my 3 p.m. dental appointment.

Although I arrived at the dentist's office plenty early, it was after 3 p.m. before the hygienist was ready for me. I'd had the forethought to bring along my e-reader, but not enough sense to bring my glasses, so I had to amuse myself watching the blue and yellow fish in the new fish tank that has been installed since my last visit to the clinic. New at the clinic, too, are the bright red scrubs that all the female staff are now wearing. They are certainly eye-catching!

Everything is fine in my mouth right now, so it didn't take long to complete the cleaning. The hygienist sent me home with a bag of goodies that included a new toothbrush, between teeth brushes, dental floss, lip balm, and three coupons for small ice cream cones from a local fast food restaurant.

Back home around 4 p.m., I heated leftovers from last night's supper. After supper, I accompanied Mother to her house, and helped her take a shower, and then I threw a load of laundry in the washer. Spent the rest of the evening watching TV, including a movie called, "Cool Dog," starring no one we recognized. A family must move from Louisiana to New York City, leaving behind a young boy's German Shepherd dog.

Naturally, the dog escapes his keeper, and sets off to find the boy. This movie strains credulity to the breaking point as it has the dog driving a car, playing a banjo and a piano, navigating a subway system, winning a checkers game, and other feats. The two main children in the film are cute enough, but the acting by the adults is pretty awful. Hubbie seemed to enjoy the humor in the movie, though. Young children might like this film.

Wednesday, June 6

Up at 6:30, so I could get ready to go to water aerobics. The water was cool today, but tolerable. Twelve of us showed up, including two new members. One of the women and I recognized each other, but neither of us remembered the other's name.

Turns out, she and I served on the community theater board for several years, before she moved to California to care for her ailing mother and father, both of whom died during the five years she was there. She moved back to our state, because it is less expensive to live here. She joined water aerobics, because she now has fibromyalgia and rheumatoid arthritis.

One of the first things she said to me was, "How come you're getting younger?' Made my day, even if she might have been being kind. She herself is 47 years old, but because of her physical problems, I guess she feels older, though I can't tell that she's aged any. One thing that is very different about her is a large ornate- design tatoo on her left arm.

Back home, Hubbie accompanied Mother to our house, where, with my help, she chopped onions and bell peppers, sliced yellow squash, and snapped green beans to use for supper later. She kept forgetting what needed chopping, what needed slicing, and whether I wanted beans left whole or snapped, so I finally listed the instructions on a piece of paper to help keep her focused, and then stood by while she worked. I could do these tasks myself, but I want her to feel useful and engaged.

After she finished the task, she worked on her jigsaw puzzle, while I got ready for the day. Later, I fixed a lunch of a hot dog and cottage cheese for Mother, a pork roast sandwich for myself, and hot pork roast (with gravy) for Hubbie. Then Hubbie and I shopped for groceries at the WDCS, while Mother went back to her puzzle.

At home, Hubbie worked in the yard, and I relaxed until time to prepare supper. Supper tonight was sauteed squash, green beans, and creamed onions over homemade garlic/parsley noodles, along with homemade biscuits. The squash was from the farmer's market, the beans and onions were from our garden, the noodles were purchased at Branson several months ago, and for the biscuits, I used sour milk from Mother's fridge. It was a very good meal, and we all really enjoyed it.

I accompanied Mother home afterward, and then I joined Hubbie in the yard, where we discovered a garter snake wound around one of the tomato plants. I hurried into the house to grab my camera and snap a shot.

Later, Hubbie and I watched TV, including a 2010 LMN movie: "Confined." A couple moves to a quiet neighborhood, where the wife begins to suspect the next door neighbor man of nafarious deeds. She snoops, breaks and enters, and calls the police (who naturally find nothing amiss). While snooping in the neighbor's basement, she finds someone confined. Stuff happens after that, and her life is endangered.

Tuesday, June 5

Up at 6:30 this morning, so Hubbie could get ready to go help the Master Gardeners mulch a public garden. After breakfast, I did stair stepping, resistance bands, and weights exercises. Once I was ready for the day, I accompanied Mother to our house.

I spent the rest of the morning gathering everything needed to make strawberry jam, and doing other household tasks. Hubbie returned home around 10 a.m., but spent the rest of his morning helping another Master Gardener unload into our yard a trailer full of mulch, leftover from this morning's MG project.

It was after noon before he came inside. By that time, Mother and I had already eaten lunch (Mother was hungry, having had her breakfast around 6:30 this morning), but I fixed a couple of hot dogs for Hubbie.

After lunch, Mother and I made the batch of strawberry jam...four pint jars. Then Hubbie napped, while I did this and that around the house, and Mother started a jigsaw puzzle. One thing I did was complete the word search puzzle contest. I started to do it last night, but discovered that the puzzle didn't match the word list. I figured the folks at the newspaper office would get a lot of calls, and it would be corrected in today's edition, and it was.

Later for supper, I heated leftovers from Sunday dinner. Afterward, we all stepped outside to view Venus crossing the sun, using an oatmeal box pinhole camera. We were able to see it reflected on the platic lid of the box.

Then, I accompanied Mother to her house, and helped her take a shower, and then threw a load of laundry in the washer before coming back home.

Back home, I grabbed my camera to snap a few shots in the yard. As I carried the camera, lens cap off, I noticed the sun refected off the lens onto the brown wall of the house, and again, I could see Venus against the sun.

Later, I uploaded a few shots from the yard to my social network page, and then Hubbie and I watched TV for the rest of the evening, including an LMN movie: "You Belong to Me." A woman thinks her ex-husband is at the root of mysterious happenings, but when it's proved he has an alibi, she discovers the real culprit is a colleague. But when the colleague attempts to kill her and commit suicide, she survives, but he falls off a cliff to his death. But weird stuff starts happening again. Seems he has returned from the grave to plague her.

Monday, June 4

Two great-grandsons have birthdays today. Happy Birthday to my "twin" Great-Grandsons!

Dicey night last night...we were awakened twice because of very loud thunder-boomers, with accompanying wind and rain. This morning, Hubbie found there were several small limbs and lots of leaves in the yard, and we'd gotten an inch of rain. But other than a short power brown-out, nothing else happened.

However, others in the county weren't so lucky. Photos in today's local newspaper show downed trees, and reports that there were downed power lines. Forty or fifty homes remained without power as of around 10 a.m. this morning.

We were up around 6:30, so I could get ready to go to water aerobics. It was such a mild morning that I was able to wear shorts and t-shirt to the gym. The water in the pool was comfortable enough, but only eleven of us showed up. One woman said that the storm last night downed a tree in her yard that fell across the propane tank, causing a leak. But everyone else seemed to be okay.

I reported to the group that I'd seen one of the members at the WDCS on Friday, and she wanted me to tell everyone that she planned to return to water aerobics in a couple of weeks, after having been away for several months, due to having two hip replacements.

Various members have tried to reach her by phone, without luck. Seems she has been a victim of several robbries lately, in which she's lost lots of big-ticket items, as well as a couple of cell phones. She lives alone in an isolated house a few miles out of town. She's now interested in going back to a land line. This lady is in her 70s, but she continues living an unusual lifestyle that includes caring for several head of cattle on her own. We've urged her to get help, or engage a companion, but she's unwilling to do so.

Back home, once I was ready for the day, I got the idea that we should travel to a town about forty-five minutes south, so that Hubbie could visit a home improvement store to spend several gift cards he'd gotten for his birthday last year, since his birthday is coming up again this month.

Right after lunch, I made a blackberry cobbler, and then around 2 p.m., we headed out. It was a mildly warm afternoon, but mostly overcast, so Mother was comfortable in the van while Hubbie and I shopped at the home improvement store. We weren't gone long, since Hubbie was able to find what he wanted pretty quickly.

From there, we went to a discount store. Here, Mother rode in her wheelchair while we shopped. We weren't looking for anything special...just killing time...but we found some stickers to use in greeting card making, some absorbent kitchen towels, and an inexpensive 1949 classic movie musical DVD starring Frank Sinatra: "On the Town." Three sailors on leave in New York City look for romance. I've never seen this movie, but since I'm a dedicated fan of movie musicals, I'm sure I'll enjoy it.

Around 5 p.m., we went to a favorite buffet restaurant. Mother enjoyed a large meal (for her) of macaroni and cheese, baked fish, glazed carrots, coleslaw, fried okra, and a roll, followed by samples of banana pudding and chocolate pudding. Hubbie went for the Mexican food, and I had baked chicken, veggies, and salad. We both had ice cream for dessert.

Back home, around 7 p.m., I accompanied Mother to her house, and then Hubbie and I watched TV for the evening, including an LMN movie: "Crisis Point." A female hostage negotiator convinces a young man to give himself up, but when he walks out of the building, he's killed. She quits her job, but is called back to service when her sister is held hostage, and the assailants insist she do the negotiating.

In the local news: eleven months ago, a pizza business went up in flames, taking with it a pharmacy store, and a dentist's office in the same building. At that time, it was thought that the fire might have been caused by an oven in the pizza store, but since then, an investigation led to the owner of the store being suspected of arson. He hightailed it to New Mexico, but U.S. Marshalls nabbed him Friday, and he has now been charged with felony arson.

Sunday, June 3

Up late again, around 8 a.m. Skipped my exercises and went ahead and got ready for the day. Hubbie accompanied Mother to our house, where she prepared veggies for a pork roast. I browned the roast and put it in the slow cooker with the veggies and cans of low-sodium beef and chicken broths.

While the roast cooked we watched the first episode of the "Hatfields and McCoys," mini-series from the History Channel. Around 11:30 a.m., I boiled the potatoes that Hubbie had peeled earlier, mashed them, and made gravy. Served the meal with individual cups of applesauce, and slices of yeast bread and margarine.

After lunch, we continued watching parts 2 and 3 of the mini-series. In researching this famous feud, I found the mini-series plays with the facts a little, but it's still pretty close to the timeline. The mini-series, starring Kevin Costner, is reported to be the number one ad-supported non-sports telecast in cable TV history. Those who missed it can see it online at the History Channel website. It's pretty interesting.

Following the movie, I accompanied Mother to her house. While I was there, a message on the cell phone warned of an approaching thunderstorm. We turned on the TV and learned that the storm was in the southern part of the county, though there was a tornado watch for the whole county. We got a tiny bit of rain this morning, and more would be welcome, though we don't want tornadoes.

Later, we watched an LMN 2007 movie, "The Bad Son." Based on a true story, a serial killer is aided by his Mother, who works in the police department.

We finished our movie marathon with another LMN movie: the 2010 "Next Stop, Murder." Two young women frequently meet on a bus, get acquainted, and begin exchanging information about family problems. Then one of them proposes committing a murder for the other, if she'll return the favor and kill someone for her.

Thunderstorms finally rolled through our part of the county around 7:30 p.m. Not sure how much rain they produced. Will have to wait until Hubbie checks the rain gauge tomorrow.
