Friday, March 29

Today is Good Friday.

Had trouble going to sleep last night. The last time I checked the clock, it was nearly 3 a.m. Then we were up at 6:30 so I could get ready to go to water aerobics. The sky was black when I left, and I wondered if there'd be a thunderstorm that would send me back home. It started raining just as I arrived at the college parking lot, so I was glad I had an umbrella with me for the walk to the gym.

The pool was warm today, and nine of us showed up. We weren't in the water long, though, when there was a big flash of lightning. Four of us got out of the pool, until we were sure the storm had passed. I'm just not keen on being in a pool of water during a thunderstorm.

Our lifeguard kept a check on the storm via an app on his smartphone, and when it had passed to 30 miles away, we returned to the pool. Got a good workout with the water noodles. Fortunately, the rain had stopped by the time I needed to walk back to the parking lot.

Back home, I warmed up with a couple of cups of coffee, and later Sis accompanied Mother to our house, where they worked on the jigsaw puzzle while I got ready for the day.

For lunch, I fixed scrambled eggs in sauteed baked potato and green onions, plus American cheese, for Mother and me, in recognition of Good Friday. Hubbie and Sis chose barbecue pork sandwiches.

Afterward, I helped work on the jigsaw puzzle. We finished it this afternoon, and Mother and Sis started another challenging 500-piece one given to Mother as a birthday gift from two great-grandchildren. The border is all that they accomplished.

Later, Mother and I prepared a pot of salmon chowder for supper. We had this with oyster crackers, and slices of homemade bread that Sis brought with her.

After supper, we played Skipbo. Hubbie won two games, and Mother won one. Around 8 p.m., we enjoyed hot cross buns that I heated in the oven, along with cups of coffee. Sis made the buns, which are very tasty. She accompanied Mother to her house around 8:30, and then Hubbie watched NCAA basketball games on TV, while I idled with my laptop and e-reader tablet.

Notes:

One: we were sad to learn through our local newspaper obituaries that the husband of one of the water aerobics members has died. He was 89 years old, and had suffered several physical problems. The water aerobics member is in her 80s, too, but is in pretty good health. She is a life-long swimmer, though she has not attended aerobics in several months, due to the declining health of her husband. Recently, they had moved to an independent living center. I feel especially bad for her, because she and her husband lost their daughter about a year ago, when the daughter was killed by her estranged husband in a murder-suicide.

Two: at water aerobics last Wednesday, one of the members (our neighbor) said she was late to the session, because there had been a terrible accident on the road she takes to the college. She didn't know if anyone had been hurt. Unfortunately, our local newspaper reported on the front page that a 28-year-old woman had been killed in that accident. Apparently, she had rear-ended the car in front of her, and then bounced off that car into oncoming traffic. She was hit head on, and partially ejected from her vehicle. We were surprised to read in her obituary that there will be no funeral service for her, even though there is a list of survivors, including a husband and children.

Thursday, March 28

Up around 7:30, and did stair stepping exercises after breakfast. I didn't do resistance and weights exercises today, since I got a pretty good workout with water noodles yesterday. Need to let muscles rest between sessions. But stair stepping works the heart muscle...water aerobics is great, but it doesn't raise my heart rate.

Hubbie accompanied Mother to our house around 9 a.m. She worked on her jigsaw puzzle, while I got ready for the day. I did this and that for the morning, until I noticed Mother was struggling with the puzzle. It's a 500-piece one that she got for her birthday. The pieces are small, so I helped her with it. In fact, I spent most of the day helping her with it.

Sis had planned to come up this afternoon, but she was delayed, because she had to work another shift at her place of employment, due to other workers not showing up. We began to be concerned when she didn't arrive before suppertime. At last, we heard from her just after 6 p.m., and she arrived later in the evening.

Too bad she couldn't be here for supper, since we had one of her favorite meals...barbecue sandwiches, with coleslaw and baked potatoes.

Got a phone call this afternoon from a lady we know at the college where I go to water aerobics asking Hubbie and me to judge the Scottish clans at the festival this year. We finally reluctantly agreed, after she assured us we don't need to be particularly knowledgeable about clans. We just need to judge them according to written guidelines.

I've judged everything from little girl beauty pageants, to business interviewees, to educational exhibits, to art and photography, to entomology exhibits (bugs), to canned goods, to pinewood derby car races, to crafts, but never Scottish clans. This is a first (and maybe a last). We just pray the weather will be decent that weekend!

Spent the evening, as usual, watching TV. At least Hubbie watched it, since there were NCAA basketball games on.

Wednesday, March 27

Up at 6:30 to get ready for water aerobics. Another br-r-r cold morning that required a coat, hat, and gloves. Hubbie scraped frost off the windshield for me. I'll be glad when the day arrives that I don't see my breath when I step outdoors. It seems strange that bright yellow jonquils blooming along the roadsides, showy bradford pear trees, and golden forsythia are competing with fields white with frost. I yearn for warm weather.

As if a chilly morning wasn't enough, the pool was cool, too. Seems the lap swimmers complained that the warm water was causing them to sweat. Still, I enjoyed the session. Thirteen of us showed up today.

Our regular leader was there, and she led us in our usual routine for about fifteen minutes, and then turned the session over to the substitute, who led us in water noodle exerises. Before we use the noodles, though, she has us form two lines, race to the center, clap the hands of a person in the other line, and race backwards. We do this several times, and then walk in circles one way, until we are told to turn in the opposite direction and walk. These exercises cause water resistance.

Then we do several exercises using the water noodles. There are three sizes of noodles, and I've been working with the largest ones. We force them down into the water and move them from side to side, do rowing motions foreward and backward, put the noodles under our knees and move our legs up and down, put them under our feet and move them up and down, and do squatting exercises with them...moving them up and down in front, then in back of us, while we bend our knees and walk sideways across the pool. Lastly, we float with them under our arms and do scissor exercises, bicycle motion exercises, and "mermaid" exercises, where we hold our ankles together and push to the side and outwards. I like these exercises, because I think they are working some muscles that I'm not reaching with my other exercises.

Back home, I thawed out with a couple of cups of coffee, and then, while Hubbie ran errands, Mother and I watched last night's episode of "Dancing With the Stars." For some reason, although I thought I'd recorded it on DVR, it was not on the list of recordings. So I found it online, and we watched it on my laptop.

It was after 11 a.m. by the time the show was over, so I called Hubbie and asked him to stop by a fast food restaurant and pick up cups of chili.

Finally, after lunch, I headed upstairs to get ready for the day. Around 1 p.m., Hubbie and I ran errands...first to the art gallery, where I talked to the interim directors. Seems the former director left without notice and returned to her home town in another state to take care of her ailing parents. I was asked if I still wanted to remain on the visual arts committee, and I said I would rather not. I'm willing to help when needed, but I no longer want to attend the meetings. I feel the same way about the visual arts committee as I do about the community theatre board...I don't want to be bothered getting out in all kinds of weather to go to the meetings. They know where I am if there is something I can do to help.

My main reason for going to the gallery was to see the new National Juried Art exhibit. There are several nice pieces in the exhibit, but two very unusual ones stood out. One is titled "Home Sweet Home," which uses actual dead flies on flypaper to mimic an old-fashioned cross-stitched sampler. Hundreds of flies are used in the piece, which, to me, is icky. I'm not sure how to interpret it...maybe if a home is "sweet" it is a natural draw to flies? Or if a family in a home is dysfunctional, the rot will draw flies?

Another of this artist's pieces is a huge Christmas wreath, with a bow that says "Peace on Earth." The piece is called "Toy Soldiers." On closer inspection, the artist glued hundreds of small green plastic toy soldiers to the tube, which gives the wreath an evergreen look. The obvious message here is the contrast between war and peace.

From the gallery, we went to the newspaper office to drop off this week's word search puzzle contest; to the bank; to the card shop, where I bought a going away card for my student; to a clothing store to use a $10 gift certificate, with which I bought an athletic jacket to wear on cool spring days; to the tax preparer's office; to the WDCS; and to the gas station.

We also took a tour to locate the home where I'll attend a wedding shower a week from Saturday. We miscued at first, going to the wrong side of town altogether. On the other side of town, we had to search a while before we found it. Glad we did, because I don't think I'd ever have found it if I'd just set out on the day of the shower without knowing where I was going.

It was 4:30 before we got back home. I put leftovers in the oven for supper, which weren't heated until 5:30. But since we'd had a hearty lunch of chili, we weren't overly hungry by suppertime. We had the remainder of the spaghetti with sauce, the Spanish chicken from last night, and Lima beans, plus cottage cheese, and slices of warmed French bread.

Hubbie accompanied Mother home afterward, and then we watched TV, including the movie "Wilder," starring Pam Grier and Rutger Haur. Murder/Suspense. Not an award winner.

Tuesday, March 26

Woke up at 6:30, but didn't get up until 7:30. Did stair stepping, resistance bands, and weights exercises after breakfast. Hubbie accompanied Mother to our house around 9 a.m., and she finished her jigsaw puzzle. I found another one for her to begin, and then I got ready for the day.

Didn't accomplish much for the rest of the morning, except to strain my brain trying to think of what to have for supper. It's a real chore trying decide on meals every week. Finally decided to have Spanish chicken, so Hubbie fetched a package of chicken out of the freezer to be thawed. Then I spent forever looking for the recipe. Went through two three-ring binders of collected recipes, with no luck, before I remembered that I'd pulled that one a few weeks ago and put it in the calendar for easy access, and then for some reason didn't use it at that time.

Mid-morning, we decided to watch last night's episode of "Dancing With the Stars," that I'd recorded on DVR last night. By the time that was over, it was near noon, so I fixed Ramen noodle soup for Mother, and scrambled egg substitute with sauteed green onions and canned spinach for Hubbie and me. We had the last of the orange muffins with it. I had intended to use the zest from a remaining orange to make more muffins, but Hubbie had the thing quartered and served before I could do it. Oh, well.

After lunch, Mother went back to her puzzle. But she was having trouble putting the border together, so I helped her. And then I did this and that, including calling the beauty shop to make haircut appointments for Mother and me next week, doing this week's word search puzzle contest from the local newspaper, reading my novel, reading the local newspaper, and playing on my laptop and e-reader tablet.

Later, I fixed the Spanish chicken...recipe: four chicken breasts coated with 1 tsp. garlic powder, 1 tsp. crushed basil, 1 tsp. pepper, 1 tsp. paprika, 1 tsp. parsely, plus I added no-salt seasoning. Put the spices in a bag, add chicken, and shake. Place coated chicken in dutch oven, along with a cup of chopped onions, and 1/4 cup water. Cover tightly and cook over medium heat 10 minutes. Turn chicken and cook 10 more minutes. Add two 8-oz. cans tomato sauce. Cover tightly and cook until chicken is tender. Serve with noodles or rice. We had rice.

As the chicken cooked, the lid on the dutch oven rattled a little, and Hubbie, being ever so "helpful", tilted it. His "helpfulness" very nearly caused the chicken to lose the liquied and burn. It would be nice if he would ask before he does "helpful" things in the kitchen.

After supper, Hubbie accompanied Mother to her house, and then we watched TV, including a 2002 movie called, "Pavement." An Alaskan tracker goes to San Francisco to help find his sister's murderer, who was found in her bed with dozens of syringe needles sticking in her. More murders occur. Authorities think it is a serial killer, but the tracker and a female investigator have other ideas.

Monday, March 25

For some reason, I woke up at 5:30 this morning, though I could have slept until 6:30. It was a long hour until the alarm went off. Had breakfast, got ready for water aerobics, and was on the road by 7:30.

Br-r-r, what a cold, windy morning for the walk to the gym! But the pool was reasonably warm, and I was very glad to be back in it. I'd alerted one of the aerobics members that I would be away from the pool until my cold cleared up. Everyone was glad to see me back this morning.

I was told the pool was closed last Friday. So, actually, I only missed four days...I went on Monday, March 11, but not on Wedesday or Friday. Missed Monday and Wednesday of last week, but the pool was closed Friday, because the lifeguard, who is also a coach at the college, had to be away for a baseball game. So I didn't miss much, after all.

A couple of other ladies are out sick this week...one with a cold, the other with flu. I definitely don't want flu!

Back home afterward, I couldn't wait to down a couple of cups of hot coffee, and stand in the hot shower for a while to thaw out.

Hubbie accompanied Mother to our house around 10:30, and she went to her jigsaw puzzle. She continued with her puzzle after lunch. Since my ESL student e-mailed me last night to tell me she wouldn't be attending class today, Hubbie and I ran errands after lunch...to the bank, the post office, the library, a dollar store, and the WDCS. We were back home around 3 p.m.

This afternoon, I alerted the Literacy Council director that my student had gone to Florida for the week. She'll return Saturday, and Monday will be the last time I'll meet with her. So I asked when I could return the Level 4 books, and inquired if she wanted the workbooks as well, since the student had started working in them. I was told the student could keep the workbooks, which she might be inspired to study and complete on her own.

Both the student and her husband have jobs lined up in Florida, so she would probably have to take ESL classes at night. The Literacy Council director here has given her information on who to contact to engage a tutor in the town where she will live. She is such an excellent student, so I hope she continues her studies in Florida. I think she will, since she's anxious to become an American citizen.

Supper tonight was leftover spaghetti with sauce, and more green beans, cottage cheese, and garlic bread. Hubbie accompanied Mother home afterward, and then he and I watched TV for the evening, including episodes of "Vikings," and "The Bible."

Sunday, March 24

Slept late again, until 8 a.m., and skipped my exercises. Got ready for the day, then had breakfast. Hubbie accompanied Mother to our house around 9:30, and we put a pot of spaghetti sauce on to simmer. Mother sliced French bread and slathered it with garlic butter.

After that, she went to her jigsaw puzzle, and Hubbie and I relaxed with the Sunday newspaper.

Ran a couple of loads of laundry this morning. When Hubbie checked the second load, he discovered water from the machine had leaked out onto the floor. We think the machine backed up because the dry well is flooded, thanks to recent snow and rain. Right now, water is standing in the yard, because the ground is saturated. We're plenty ready for some warm, sunny days that will dry things out. We can go a week without doing laundry, but longer than that and we'd be desperate for clean underwear.

Our Sunday dinner of spaghetti with sauce, green beans, cottage cheese, and garlic bread, was ready at noon. The sauce was especially good with the addition of leftover meatloaf.

Afterward, Mother returned to her puzzle, Hubbie watched TV, and I read my novel. This novel is called, "Sandcastles," about an Irish family who live on the Connecticut shore. The man and wife, both artists, have three young daughters that they take on a trip to Ireland to trace the family's roots. While there, a man threatens the husband and one of the daughters, and the husband kills the man. He is sent to prison for six years. Now he is out, and his wife is unsure if she wants to let him back into the family.

Around 3:30 p.m., we enjoyed the last of the bucket cake, with cups of coffee, and then Mother was ready to go home. Hubbie accompanied her.

Shortly after he returned, he got a phone call from his sister, who said she and Hubbie's nephew had been in a car accident on an icy road. They'd been traveling from another state and were about halfway home when an 18-wheeler jackknifed, sideswiping them on the driver's side. The airbags engaged and, thank goodness, neither of them was injured, but the car was totaled.

They are now stuck in a podunk town until they can get a rental car, and the weather clears enough for them to get back on the road. They were stuck at the crash site for two hours before officers arrived, so once they were taken to a motel, they were hungry. They walked to a popular country restaurant next door, only to find that it had closed at 4 p.m. due to the weather. They ended up ordering pizza.

Later, Hubbie spent the evening watching NCAA basketball games, and I played on my laptop and tablet, and read my novel.
