Saturday, May 15

Up late again this morning, around 8 a.m., and then did a treadmill session and resistance exercises after breakfast.

It rained hard this morning, which didn't deter one of the female cats from having her kittens near Mother's porch. Mother discovered her soaking wet early this morning, so Hubbie went over and gathered her and two kittens into a basket and brought them in the house. The kittens were pretty dry, but the mama cat needed a towel rubdown.

Then, Hubbie put her and her kittens in a box in the sunroom, but the mama seemed unsettled, so he took the box to Mother's porch. Later, he checked on her and found her with another kitten on the ground near the porch. So he put that kitten in the box with other two. So far, the mama has accepted her new digs, but she'll probably eventually move the kittens somewhere else...hopefully, not out in the elements again. These three kittens are white, black, and gray (or what is known as Russian Blue, though of course, none of the kittens are full blooded).

After lunch, we got a visit from a couple looking for kittens. We were glad to oblige by giving them their choice from the four that are now eating kitten chow and ready for homes. The couple chose the Siamese-looking one, and a black one. They wanted two to could keep each other company. We now have another black one and a Russian Blue left from that litter. Hopefully, we can find homes for those soon.

The couple who took the kittens will obviously give them a good home...the husband works on the railroad, and the wife seems to be a very pleasant, loving person. It takes no time at all to become attached to those little critters, so we are anxious that the kittens go to good homes, where we know they will be well cared for.

Later, Hubbie and I ran errands...to buy birthday greeting cards, and to a grocery store for slaw mix, plus angel food cake and ice cream to go with fresh strawberries for supper. Supper tonight was Ziplock bag omelets, served with biscuits and gravy.

Mother went home afterward, and Hubbie and I did our usual thing of watching TV. Tonight, we watched, "Gran Torino," an R-rated movie starring Clint Eastwood. Eastwood's character is a Korean War veteran, and a widower, who has recently lost his wife. He's grizzled, grumpy, and tough enough to strike fear into a gang of punks. His neighborhood has become mainly Asian, which he at first resents. But then after he gets acquainted with one of the young women, he begins to appreciate her family and friends. He mentors her brother, coming to his defense when the young man is set upon by the gang. But in so doing, he sets in motion a terrible chain of events, which he then deals with in an unorthodox manner.

Friday, May 14

By the time we got back home after attending a community theater play last night, it was too late to post a blog.

Hubbie and I were on duty as ushers for the a musical production of "I Love You, You're Perfect, Now Change." We arrived at the college theater at the appointed 6:45 hour in order to be ready to collect tickets and hand out programs by 7 p.m.

Unfortunately, it was a scant crowd for this opening performance, with fewer than 25 in attendance. Fortunately, though, this is an intimate three-quarter-round theater, so the audience didn't look quite as sparse as it would have in the big auditorium.

The play humorously and musically takes the audience through the various stages of relationships, from dating, to marriage, to the first baby, to divorce, and finally to an old couple striking up an acquaintance while attending the wake for a deceased woman that, as it turns out, neither of them really knows.

Mother opted out of going to this play, since it contained some language and adult situations.

Before we went to the play, we decided to buy supper at a fast food restaurant, because I was in the mood for a grilled chicken sandwich and a cup of soft serve ice cream. We were a bit taken aback, though, when we were charged fifty cents for two cups of water. In the future, we'll just buy what we want and bring it home to eat, where the water is free.

As we left, we bought an extra cup of soft serve for Mother, and then headed to a gas station to fill the van. Inadvisedly, we took a main drag out to the WDCS station, which placed us in bumper-to-bumper traffic all the way. I fervently hoped Mother's cup of soft serve wouldn't be liquid by the time we arrived home. But when I talked with her this morning, she said it was okay...only slightly melted around the edges.

Other than the play, yesterday was pretty unproductive. I did do a treadmill session in the morning, though I walked at a slower pace. I'll need to build back to my usual level over the course of several days.

Mother stayed home all day yesterday. I finished clipping articles and photos I'd done for our regional newspaper over the years. I've now reduced a huge stack of newspapers to a small plastic tote. Now I can tackle a bookshelf or two at a time until I weed out my office.

Today, I slept late, until 8 a.m., but still did a treadmill session and weights exercises after breakfast. Not much else happened until after lunch, when Hubbie and I ran errands...to a roadside vendor to pick up a flat and a half of strawberries, to stop by a local radio station to check on the availability of Branson show tickets, to the hydroponic farm store for tomatoes (but, phooey, it is closed until Monday), to the WDCS for several grocery items, to a vet clinic to pick up a case of canned dog food and a bottle of pet vitamins, and then to a restaurant for a pound of pork barbecue, which we paid for with the $10 coupon I won.

Mother will work up the flat of strawberries for the freezer, and I plan to eat the other four quarts (Hubbie will probably help me). Every year, we offer to help Mother wash and slice strawberries for the freezer, and every year, she rejects our help, because, she says, "I'd rather do it on my own, because I have my own little way of handling them."

Later, we had a supper of leftover potato soup, with yeast rolls. Mother went home after that, Hubbie went out to work in the yard, and I washed and sliced a quart of berries to snack on later.

Wednesday, May 12

Slept late again this morning, and still didn't get on the treadmill. It was way up in the morning before I was ready for the day. I would have gotten ready earlier, but just as I went into the bathroom, there was a loud clap of thunder. I do not bathe in thunderstorms, so I waited it out. Around 10:30, the sun came out, and I was able to get on with my morning ablutions.

Mother came over around that time and gathered materials for making a couple of birthday cards.

Later I joined her to make the ladybug card shown in my previous blog. Took forever for me to wrap my mind around a design. Nothing I tried seemed to satisfy me. What I ended up with isn't great, but at least I finished it.

Since Hubbie and I had eaten a late breakfast, neither one of us was hungry at lunch. But around 3 p.m., I decided I should eat a little something and settled for a slice of bread with peanut butter and four ounces of milk.

Otherwise, it was a pretty boring day. Later, for supper, we made hot roast pork sandwiches from last night's leftovers. Mother went home afterward, and Hubbie and I watched TV, including the movie, "The Gift." This is an R-rated film starring Cate Blanchett, Katie Holmes, Hilary Swank, and Keanu Reeves. A psychic widow, who some think is a witch, is drawn into the murder of a local seductive woman. She sees visions and discovers stuff about the small Georgia town where she lives.

Note: My mind is really not functioning properly...I forgot that last night was the second Tuesday of the month, when I was supposed to attend a visual arts committee meeting at 5 p.m., and a community theater board meeting at 7 p.m. Oh well, I doubt that anything of earth-shaking importance was discussed at either meeting.

Ladybug Greeting Card

This is a snapshot of the ladybug greeting card I made today. It's nothing special, but it was fun to make using rubber stamped ladybugs and flowers, tinted with colored pencils, scrap black and red cardstock, and a happy birthday greeting snipped from a recycled greeting card.

Garden Flowers

These are a couple of snapshots I took yesterday of flowers in our yard. The birdbath looks nice surrounded by hostas, foxglove, and Dianthus. Bright purple clematis is blooming on three posts, too.

Tuesday, May 11

Slept late again this morning, and skipped my exercises. I'm hoping to feel up to a few minutes on the treadmill tomorrow.

Mother came over mid-morning, and we finished the gift baskets. Then I browsed through greeting card making books and magazines looking for ideas. Nothing jumped out at me today, but I did do a page of rubber stamp ladybug motifs. Maybe I'll be inspired to use those to make a card tomorrow.

Walked around the yard and did snapshots of some of the flower gardens. Petted the new batch of kittens...actually, there are two batches, but we can't locate the other ones, since the mama moved them shortly after they were born. The batch that's on the back porch is friendly and cute, of course.

Speaking of mama cats, Hubbie took one of them to be spayed today. She's now mending in a pet carrier in the sunroom. Once the cat with the four kittens weans her litter, she'll be next for spaying. Another female is ready to have her kittens, but a woman at the vet's clinic has asked for her, and the vet has agreed to help find homes for the kittens.

The old calico mama cat that we had spayed last fall has taken leave of the place. We don't know why, since she was roly-poly fat and seemed contented to be here. A couple of male cats have wandered off, too, so our cat supply is slowly dwindling, thank goodness.

Other than touring the yard and playing with the kittens, I didn't do much except read two new magazines that arrived in the mail, plus the evening newspaper.

Hubbie ran errands several times, including to the vet's clinic twice. In his travels, he stopped by a farm to see if strawberries were available, but the farmer wasn't around. Hubbie will call in the morning to see if we can get a flat, because we need to get some into the freezer before they are gone.

For supper tonight we had pork roast with carrots and onions, mashed potatoes and gravy, and individual cups of applesauce. It was all very tasty, and I ate two generous helpings, which pleased Mother, since she thought I'd been starving myself.

Actually, I've eaten plenty every day, just not with my usual enthusiasm. If I hadn't been eating, I'd have lost weight, and I don't seem to have done that. But my appetite was sharpened by the tonight's roast, which is one of my favorite meals.

Mother went home after supper, and Hubbie and I watched, "Jesse Stone: No Remorse," that I'd recorded on DVR. Then we watched episodes of "Dancing with the Stars," and "Lost."

Monday, May 10

Slept late this morning, but didn't attempt to do a treadmill session. I'm giving myself a few more days to fully recover before I begin my exercises, again.

Didn't accomplish much today. Gathered stuff for putting together gift baskets of beauty aids...lotions, scrubs, bath salts, etc....for granddaughters who have birthdays at the end of the month. Mother washed bottles and jars, which are now drying. We'll fill them tomorrow and finish the baskets.

Otherwise, I did a few piddling things around the house and then watched TV. Hubbie ran errands, including taking the male cat to the vet for a checkup..this is the cat that was hit by a car and had to have his shattered jaw surgically repaired. The vet was pleased with his work. The cat's jaw is a little bent, but he's able to eat, which is the important thing.

For supper, we had potato soup and hot rolls. Mother went home afterward, and Hubbie and I did our usual thing of watching TV. We started with an episode of a 10-part PBS series, "Lark Rise to Candleford," a story that revolves around the lives of folks in 19-century Oxforshire. Then we watched "Dancing with the Stars."

Mother's Day

Happy Mother's Day to all the mom's out there.

Mother and I have had a very nice day...nothing exciting, but just laid back and relaxing. Got nice greetings and phone calls from my kids. Also got a sweet musical card from Hubbie. Mother and I exchanged small gifts...I gave her lightweight undershirts to wear on cool days, like the ones we're having right now, and she gave me an oriole birdfeeder.

I felt better when I got up this morning, for the first time in a week. We came home early from our trip, because I woke up at 6:30 yesterday morning and had an awful episode of the wobbles and then breaking out in a cold sweat. I barely made it back to bed from the bathroom. But then I slept for three hours, got up and ate a little breakfast, took my medications, and showered.

At 11:30, I encouraged Hubbie to go to the luncheon in honor of his nephew without me. I just wasn't up to it. As soon as he left, I went back to bed and slept until he returned at 3 p.m. At that point, we decided to pack up and come back home, even though we'd paid campsite fees for Saturday night.

At home, I bundled up on the couch and slept through most of the evening in front of TV, then went to bed early and slept until around 8 a.m. this morning. I awoke feeling more like my old self. All week, I'd felt very tired, experienced waves of nausea, and had a loss of appetite. I guess a ton of sleep helped me mend.

I managed to soldier through Friday, even though I wasn't up to par. Once the camper was set up, Hubbie and I went shopping....to another store that has sales every weekend, where I found my favorite brand of blue jeans on sale, to a hobby shop, where I picked up several rubber stamps from the clearance counter, and then on to a warehouse store for several items.

Friday evening, we went to our favorite restaurant for dinner, where I ate too much. Then we stopped by Hubbie's daughter's house. His other daughter arrived a little while later, and we all had a nice visit.

But I was very glad to get back home yesterday. Mother and I had made a batch of homemade tomato soup and pimento cheese for the trip, in case we needed an extra meal while we were gone. We didn't, so we had them for supper last night. Hubbie wasn't overly hungry, since he'd indulged in barbecue with potato salad and baked beans at his niece's house. Crawfish was also available, but he passed on those, since we are not fans of that delicacy.

Today, Hubbie offered to take Mother and me out to eat, but I was in no mood, so he went to the WDCS and bought a rotisserie chicken, which we had with baked potatoes. Later in the afternoon, we had big bowls of chocolate ice cream with nuts and marachio cherries, while we watched the movie, "Definitely Maybe," a PG-14 romantic comedy.

Mother went home after that, and Hubbie and I continued watching TV. Tonight's movie was, "Who is Clark Rockefeller,"a Lifetime Movie Channel true story based on Christian Karl Gerthartsreiter, a con man who impersonated numerous people, and finally claimed to be heir to the famous Rockefeller family. He was accepted into high society, and married a millionaire with whom he had a daughter. The marriage fails, he loses custody of his daughter, and then abducts her. The FBI becomes involved.
