Tired last night, but had trouble going to sleep. Finally drifted off around 2 a.m. It was nearly 8 a.m., before I woke up. Mother was already awake.
Once she was settled in the den, and we'd all had breakfast, I did a session on the treadmill, followed by weights exercises. It was nearly noon by the time I got ready for the day and did a couple of things around the house, including setting two pots of turnips to boiling that Hubbie had peeled earlier. Hubbie discovered that some of the turnips that a neighbor had brought from his garden were beginning to spoil, so we knew we needed to get them into the freezer.
Hubbie and I weren't hungry for lunch, but since Mother had only eaten a piece of toast, with a cup of coffee, she was ready to eat. I served her Ramen noodle soup, with a side of crackers and butter.
She returned to bed after lunch, and Hubbie and I ran a couple of errands, and stopped by the fairgrounds to visit the Extension Homemakers Holiday Craft Fair. We made one turn of the booths, at one of which I bought a small jar of pepper jelly, and at another of which I bought a plate of yeast rolls. I was assured that the pepper jelly was mild. We bought a jar at Branson recently that was way too hot for both Hubbie and me.
I bought the rolls mainly because the lady selling them commented that she'd stayed up half the night baking, since she'd run out of goods yesterday. Today, though, folks weren't buying, she said.
Besides the craft fair, we went to a couple of grocery stores looking for cardamon, and found some on sale at one of them. We also picked up two cases of chicken broth at 50 cents a can. Then we went to the everything's a dollar store, before stopping at the WDCS for a few items, including a package of resistance band for me to use in exercising. I broke the two I had.
Back home, Mother was still propped up in bed working on puzzle books, and she remained there for the afternoon.
Since Hubbie and I hadn't eaten lunch, and it was now after 2 p.m., we grabbed a peanut butter and jelly sandwich and an apple. Afterward, I put the cooled turnips into freezer bags, keeping aside a container of them for a meal next week.
When Granddaughter reads about the turnips, I'm sure she will be reminded of the time several years ago when we encouraged her to try "just a bite" of the vegetable. When she did she made the most awful face, but fearing she'd offend me, she held the detested food in her mouth until I laughed and told her to spit it out. I'm sure she hasn't allowed a turnip to pass her lips since.
Around 4 p.m., Mother was ready to get up, and have an early supper. So I fixed her a scrambled egg (one of a couple of dozen that Sis brought from her laying hens a couple of weeks ago), plus toast and jelly, and a cup of coffee. She declared the supper delicious.
Around 6:30, though, she was ready to head back to bed. Later, Hubbie and I watched a movie on DVD..."Bigger Than the Sky," a 2005 comedy/romance about a young man whose girlfriend broke up with him, and who is a shrinking violet at work and everywhere else in his life. Tired of being "invisible," he happens on a small community theater and decides to audition for Cyrano de Bergerac, though he has never done theater before. The director finds that he is perfect for the lead, though at the first read-through, he sounds very amateurish reading his lines. There's nowhere to go but up from there. This was another of the $1 DVDs I bought at a recent yard sale.
After that, we watched our favorite college football team play to a win. I'd recorded the game on DVR.

Friday, Nov. 4
Today is Granddaughter's 30th birthday. Happy Birthday, Granddaughter!
Because of all that's been going on around here with Mother, I failed to note in my blogs the birthdays of a dear Daughter-in-Law, whose birthday was Oct. 26, and two precious great-grandchildren who had birthdays on Oct. 29...a Great-Granddaughter, and a Great-Grandson.
We were up around 7:30 this morning. I'd entertained the idea last night of getting up early enough to go to water aerobics, but since I overslept, I decided that if Mother is doing well on Monday, I'll try to go then. Mother had awakened at 5:30 a.m., but didn't ask to go to the bathroom until I woke up.
But after breakfast, I did do a treadmill session and weights exercises. I showered afterward, applied makeup, etc., but didn't dress (except for a robe), because I knew I'd need to get into my swimsuit and help Mother bathe right after lunch.
I called the home medical services office, though, and started arrangements for getting a physical therapist for Mother. I think she's ready now to have help in exercising to get her legs stronger.
I was advised to contact the doctor's office to arrange for a prescription for a therapist, which I did. Later this afternoon, someone called from the clinic to say an order had been written, though we probably won't hear from the therapist until Monday.
Funny: Mother received a get-well card this morning from the ladies at Caring Hands Hospice (a part of the home medical services)...it is one that I made as part of a stack we donated to them. It reminded me, though, that I have another stack to give them...the ones the other scrapbook club member and I made at our last meeting, and which I'd forgotten about following Mother's emergency.
After lunch, and after I'd helped Mother bathe and go back to bed for an afternoon nap, Hubbie and I ran a few errands (I knew Mother would be comfortably sleeping for a few hours).
We first went to the museum to deliver an old record book, dating back to 1938, listing the names of a local musical arts club. and noting the dues and expenses of the club. A friend of ours (the one who has been cleaning closets and giving us crafting materials) asked me to drop it off at the museum some day when I was there. We found it this morning, when we cleaned the spare bedroom where Mother is staying, and stored stacks of totes in the camper temporarily, in anticipation of visits from the physical therapist. Obviously, I can't be trusted to deliver anything anywhere...at least not right away.
From there, we went to the greeting card shop, where I spent a $2 coupon to buy a birthday card. The coupon was only good through November 6. Managed to get a frazzling paper cut while I was there, which was annoying, but refreshments of chocolate candy samples, chocolate chip cookies, and hot wassail, made up for it.
Went to the post office next, and then to the college to view an art exhibit that I understood was to be there through November 4. It had already been taken down, drat it. But it was worth the trip to the college just to see the trees in spectacular fall colors.
Our next stop was a health store for buy-one-get-one-half-off bottles of fish oil tablets. Our last stop was the WDCS to pick up a few incidentals and grocery items. As we were walking back to our van, I noticed an older gentleman had not quite gotten a shopping cart into the corral, and the thing rolled to and bumped the car parked right next to the corral, then veered toward our van. I managed to catch it before it reached its destination, though, and secured it into the corral.
Back home around 3 p.m., I checked on Mother, who was still sleeping peacefully. She finally awoke at 4:30. Later, she thoroughly enjoyed and ate every bite of her supper of potatoes fried with onions, and biscuits and gravy.
A little while later, she was ready to visit the bathroom, where she finally had a normal BM. She was ready for bed shortly afterward, though, at 6:30. She was up this morning (or at least awake) from 5:30 a.m. until around 2 p.m., and then from 4:30 until 6:30 p.m., so that was quite a few hours for her.
Hubbie and I spent the evening watching TV, including the 2010 movie, "The Black Swan," starring Natalie Portman. A ballerina is cast as the white swan in "Swan Lake," then starts having mental problems when she becomes more and more like the evil black swan (whom she also portrays).
Well, at least we started watching the movie. Early on, even though I was enjoying it, Hubbie nodded off, a sure sign of his boredom. So I stopped the movie (which I'll watch another time, when Hubbie is otherwise occupied), and started a DVD movie, a 1990 crime drama starring Kevin Costner, the late Anthony Quinn, and Madeleine Stowe. It's a movie I bought for a dollar at a yard sale. A newly retired Navy aviator accepts and invitation to visit a wealthy friend at his hacienda in Mexico. His friend is a ruthless crime boss, but he dares to fool around with his host's beautiful young wife, anyway, which leads to all sorts of problems for both of the lovers.

Thursday, Nov. 3
Up at 7 a.m. to get ready to take Mother to the doctor for a 10:30 appointment. The weather has been lovely for a long time, but wouldn't you know it, today it was chilly and windy.
So after breakfast, it was necessary to help Mother into three layers of clothing. It was a tiring chore for her, which is why I helped her do it early, so she could spend some time in her rocking chair resting while I got ready.
Around 9:45, Hubbie drove our van across the lawn and close the front porch. A wooden step we use in the sunroom was helpful in helping Mother get into the van. We were able to roll her wheelchair right up to the step, so she didn't have to hoist herself up, but just step over to the van seat. I helped her do this by getting into the seat first, then holding onto her until she could turn around and sit down as I moved across to the other seat.
At the clinic, Hubbie drove up to the door and we did a reverse procedure getting her out of the van. We arrived in the doctor's office about 15 minutes early, but it turned out that it was nearly 11 a.m., before she was called back to an exam room.
After that, the nurse quickly took Mother's basic vitals, and it wasn't long before the doctor arrived. Mother's BP was good, at 128/60, and her pulse was also good, as well as her temperature. The doctor was pleased with her progress, and ordered blood work to make sure she's no longer anemic.
We left the clinic around 11:30. By the time we got back home, Mother was ready for lunch and a nap. She opted for Ramen noodle soup, after which we peeled a couple of layers of clothing off, and she gratefully got into bed.
She slept for a couple of hours, and then I helped her come back to the den, where she watched TV until suppertime. For supper, Hubbie and I had baked potatoes topped with chili and sour cream, and sides of garden salad, and Mother had half a plain baked potato with butter and sour cream.
By 7 p.m., she was ready for bed again. Hubbie and I continued watching TV, including the 2010 movie, "Dear John," starring Channing Tatum, and Amanda Seyfried. This is a Chick Flick, of course, about a soldier on leave, who falls for a conservative college student.
Note: yesterday, our nearly blind, white cat, and another cat were romping and playing upstairs, when we suddenly heard a loud crash. We found nothing amiss upon inspection, but the white cat ran downstairs in a panic. Thereafter, she jumped sky high when she saw a shadow, or anything else within her limited sight. She only felt comfortable in the recliner chair. At 9 p.m., the usual time the cats go to the sunroom for the night. She was plenty ready to be out there.
Then this morning, she hesitated to come inside. When she did, she wanted right back out. Hubbie finally brought her in to the recliner, where she stayed all afternoon. I think she might have run headlong and hard into a door upstairs and knocked herself silly to the point she's afraid now to walk indoors, much less run.

Wednesday, Nov. 2
Up around 7 a.m., but didn't go to water aerobics for obvious reasons. But this morning, Mother seemed stronger. After a small breakfast of toast, she was able to walk into the den and sit in her rocking chair.
Once I got her settled and had my breakfast, I did a treadmill session and weights exercises. After I was ready for the day, I did this and that around the house. Around 10 a.m., Mother was hungry for a small bowl of Jell-o with part of a sliced banana.
At lunch, she ate chicken salad on crackers. And then she was ready for a shower. So I got into my swimsuit and helped her. This is always quite a procedure, since it's difficult, even with my help, for Mother to disrobe and get onto the shower stall seat, then get dressed afterward. She was plenty ready for a nap afterward.
While she snoozed, I took the opportunity to run to a couple of stores...first to the card shop to look for a refill for a Lavender scented reed diffuser. There were none available, so I used a coupon to buy three cards. From there, I went to the store that has a sale every weekend to buy a pair of leggings to wear under clothing in cold weather. I used a $10 store-issued coupon toward the purchase.
I was gone under an hour, and Mother was still snoozing when I returned home. Shortly after I came back, Hubbie ran errands to a couple of grocery stores.
Later, for supper, we had leftovers...pork roast and veggies in gravy over mashed potatoes, with a side of cottage cheese for Mother, and chili for Hubbie and me.
We watched TV for the evening, and Mother stayed in the den until 8:30, before she was ready to go back to bed. So she was up for five or six hours, which was good.

Tuesday, Nov. 1
Another month swiftly gone, and here we are in November.
Up around 7 a.m. Mother was awake, and apparently had been awake for about an hour. I helped her take care of her needs and get settled in her rocking chair in the den. But it wasn't long before she began complaining of stomach cramps (caused by the laxative she took last night). The cramps increased as time passed, and soon it was necessary to help her back to the bathroom again.
We were both hoping that the laxative was working. But her pains got worse, and she became woozy and nauseated. But she was still not able to have a movement. So I helped her back to bed, where soon nausea overcame her again. We returned to the bathroom, with me practically having to carry her because she was so weak.
We spent a harrowing 20 minutes or so, with her doubled over in pain, nauseated, and woozy to the point I had to hold her head for her. Finally, she succeeded, after which she was so weak from nausea and dizziness that I practically carried her back to bed again.
Though the nurse yesterday advised that I should take her to the clinic today, Mother was so weak after her bathroom effort that I decided to wait until after she napped, so I could see if she was strong enough to walk, because if she couldn't walk, then it would be impossible for her to hoist herself into the van.
She slept all afternoon, and continued to feel weak. So I decided she needed a bedside potty chair, and started the process of obtaining one around 2 p.m. Fortunately, we know the folks at Caring Hands and at a medical supply/pharmacy, so we were able to expedite the matter by around 4 p.m., when Mother woke up needing a potty.
While she took care of business, I changed her bed, and then helped her back into it.
Then I made a batch of quick-set Jell-o for her, since I knew her stomach wasn't up to anything more. She ate enough of it to be able to take her blood pressure and ulcer meds.
I think we may soon need to engage both a visiting nurse, and a home health therapist...the nurse to draw blood, etc., and the therapist to help her strengthen through exercise.
This afternoon, while Mother slept, I made a big pot of chili for Hubbie's and my supper. We usually have chili on Halloween, but I didn't have all the ingredients I needed yesterday, so I put it off until today. It turned out really good...good enough that Hubbie ate two bowls of it.
We spent the evening as usual...watching TV, including the elimination episode of "Dancing with the Stars."
Mother slept all evening, rising only to take care of potty needs, before returning to bed for the night.

Monday, Oct. 31
Up around 7 a.m. Didn't go to water aerobics, since I wanted to be home this morning to contact the doctor's office to report Mother's progress, and to find out what I could give her for constipation. I didn't want to risk giving her something that would irritate her ulcer.
After breakfast, I did a treadmill session and resistance exercises. Then I helped Mother take a shower and get settled into her rocking chair.
By the time I was ready for the day, it was already time for lunch. Mother opted for macaroni and cheese, and Hubbie and I had sandwiches. Afterward, Hubbie shopped for groceries at the WDCS, and I reviewed the lesson plan for my student this afternoon.
At 2 p.m., I helped Mother get ready for an afternoon nap, and shortly thereafter, I went down to the college to meet my student.
Today, she learned how to use "the same," and "different:" This pencil is yellow. That pencil is yellow. The pencils are the same color. And, This pen is blue. That pen is black. The pens are different colors.
She also used the comparisons, as...as: John is 25. Mary is 25. Mary is as old as John is.
Using verbs (see, hear, know, want, need, and like) with no -ing in the present time made her think a bit: I sit her every day. I'm sitting (with -ing) here every day. I speak English every day. I'm speaking English every day. I see my teacher every day. I see (not seeing) my teacher every day. I like Jack. I like (not liking) Jack.
We ended the session with a review of the chapter.
Back home at 4:30, I found that Mother had awakened about 40 minutes before I arrived, and was ready to visit the bathroom. I'd alerted Hubbie that if Mother needed me before my session was over, he was to call me. I was less than five minutes from home.
I put leftovers from yesterday's lunch into the oven for our supper. After supper, the nurse from the doctor's office called to tell me what kind of laxative to give to Mother. Hubbie went to a grocery store to fetch it, and I administered a dose to her right away. Hopefully, the med will solve Mother's problem by morning.
The nurse also suggested that I take Mother in for a visit with the doctor tomorrow, instead Thursday, as previously scheduled. So I'll call for an appointment in the morning.
Later, we watched an episode of "Dancing with the Stars." It was a cute show, with the contestants in spooky costumes dancing to Halloween songs. Mother watched it and enjoyed it, but was ready to go to bed as soon as the show ended.

Sunday, Oct. 30
Up at 7 a.m. to take care of Mother's needs and get her settled for breakfast. After breakfast, I put a pork roast and veggies into the slow cooker, and then did a treadmill session and weights exercises.
Once I was ready for the day, I did this and that until time to finish lunch preparations. The pork roast, with onions and carrots, and mashed potatoes and gravy, and a side of applesauce, was very good.
We usually having Sunday dinner in the dining room, but today, we opted to eat in the den and watch the 1993 movie, "Hocus Pocus," starring Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Kathy Najimy. The three, who play sister witches are hanged in Salem Massachusetts 300 years ago, but are resurrected Halloween night in modern times. In order to stay alive, they must suck the life force from children before midnight. A young girl, her teen brother, and his girlfriend must stop them.
The local arts council sponsored an outdoor showing of this film tonight at a local college. Mother enjoys the outdoor movies, but of course, she couldn't attend tonight. So I was glad when I found that the ABC Family channel was showing it last night, and I could record it on DVR for today.
Following the movie, Mother was ready for her afternoon nap. After I got her settled in, Hubbie and I watched the 2001 movie, "No One Can Hear You," starring Kelly McGillis. A teen house guest is not what he seems, and soon things turn gruesome.
Last night, I made a peach cobbler, and Hubbie and I sampled it this afternoon during the movie. Mother said earlier that she wanted to have hers as her supper later.
Hubbie and I continued our movie marathon with a 2009 film called, "Law Abiding Citizen," starring Gerard Butler and Jamie Foxx. A man's family is killed, and one of the killers is set free on a technicality. So the man decides to go after the killer himself, as well as the district attorney and others that cut the deal.
This evening's movie was a Hallmark Channel 2011 feature, "The Good Witch's Family," starring Catherine Bell. The good witch's (Bell) long lost cousin, Abigail arrives in town and causes big trouble.
