Saturday, August 18

Up around 7 a.m. this morning to get ready to travel a couple of hours south to attend Granddaughter's baby shower.

We spent the morning gathering various things we wanted to take with us, and then had an early lunch around 11 a.m.

Headed out at noon for an uneventful trip to the barbecue restaurant where the shower took place. Arrived around 1:30.

Shortly after 2 p.m., we enjoyed refreshments, including the various fruits and dip that I contributed. The fruit was well received, especially by the six or seven kids who attended.

Besides finger foods, like ham roll-ups, nuts, chips and dip, as well as pink punch, the refreshment table also included a really cute cake, designed to resemble a baby quilt, with pink, green, and yellow icing piped into blocks topped with decorations, and the name of the new baby written in the middle.

Following refreshments, we played a few baby shower games. To begin with, each guest was given a clothespin and told that in order to keep the clothespin, we should not say the word "baby." But if we heard someone else say it, we could steal their clothespin. A granddaughter, sister to the honoree, won this game.

The second game involved identifying various brands of chocolate bars that had been melted and smeared into diapers to resemble baby poop. The expressions of disgust on the faces of participants were hilarious, as they looked at and smelled the diapers.

In another game, participants rolled off the amount of bathroom tissue that they thought would fit exactly around the honoree's middle. I managed to win his one by wrapping the tissue around myself and allowing enough to encompass a "baby bump."

Granddaughter opened gifts after that. She got lots of really cute things, as well as practical things. We opted to give a money gift, so Granddaughter can choose something she really needs.

By 3:30, most of the guests had left, and since Mother was getting tired, we decided to head out, too.

We arrived home around 5 p.m. We debated whether to stop for supper at a favorite restaurant in another town, but decided against it, since we weren't really hungry enough.

At home later, I fixed a supper of the the leftover egg gravy over toast, with a side of cantaloupe. Accompanied Mother to her house afterward, and then Hubbie and I relaxed in front of TV.

Watched a couple of old movies, including "Deep Impact," a 1998 disaster film, in which a comet threatens the extinction of mankind and everything else on earth. If it can't be destroyed, only those selected by lottery will survive in previously constructed shelters.

The second movie we saw was "The Last Sunset," a 1961 western. No matter how old they are, Hubbie enjoys westerns.

Friday, August 17

Up around 8 a.m. After breakfast, I put a pan of eggs on to boil, to be used in egg gravy over toast for supper. Hubbie accompanied Mother to our house around 9:30, and while I exercised, she chopped the eggs for the refrigerator. She also mixed a package of dried peach dip with sour cream, to be served with fruit tomorrow.

Once I was ready for the day, I gathered supplies for Mother to use in making a couple of greeting cards.

At noon, I fixed a Ramen Noodle soup lunch for her, and then waited for Hubbie to return from the barber shop before heating the remainder of the macaroni and cheese and serving it with cold fried chicken for our lunch.

After lunch, Mother headed to the couch for a nap, and Hubbie and I ran errands...to the farmer's market, to the WDCS, and to the everything's a dollar store.

At the everything's a dollar store: I couldn't believe that both Halloween and Christmas decorations are already on display!

At the WDCS, I bought a package of ten pairs of cotton undies. At home, I decided to wash them, but each pair was rolled tightly and Scotch taped, so Hubbie immediately grabbed scissors and went after a pair.

"Be careful!!" I warned. "You'll cut the fabric!" Snip. Too late. He clipped a hole in that pair. After that, we used our fingers to carefully remove the tape fron the other nine pairs.

Mother finished her nap about 3:30, and we all relaxed until time for me to finish supper preparations. I made a recipe of white gravy, to which I added the eggs. Served this over buttered toast, with a side of cantaloupe. Mother thoroughly enjoyed the meal, although the cantaloupe was the only healthy thing about it.

My reason for making this supper was because we have an over-supply of eggs right now, because we'd bought some just before receiving a coupon for a dozen more. Guess I need to put some in the freezer.

Accompanied Mother to her house after supper, and waited for her to take a shower before I returned home. Hubbie and I watched TV for the rest of the evening, including a movie..."Angels and Demons." In this 2009 movie, the Vatican is in danger from a terrorist. Add to that a Vatican murder, and four kidnapped Cardinals, and a Harvard symbologist is off and running. Stars Tom Hanks.

Thursday, August 16

Up at 7:30 this morning, but skipped my exercises after breakfast, so I could finish preparations for a scrapbook club meeting this afternoon.

Hubbie accompanied Mother to our house around 9 a.m., and once I was ready for the day, I fixed a platter of fruit, gathered pretty plates, glasses, and cups, and did other things related to making things nice for later.

Then Mother and I began working on greeting cards. Mother working on kid birthday cards, and I made two adult birthday cards, each of which feature a cupcake and the greeting "Carpe Cupcake," meaning "seize the cupcake, as a word-play on the saying "carpe diem," which popularly translates as "seize the day."

After lunch, we continued card-making. Around 12:30, one of the members called to say she would not be able to come, since she was babysitting with a grandson, and weather reports showed storms north and west of us, which she feared would move to our county before time for the meeting to end. This lady won't leave her house, if there is even a hint of rain or the threat of it. As it turned out, not a drop fell all afternoon.

But a few minutes after 1 p.m., both the other member of the club, and the new Extension Homemakers agent, arrived. The agent is a very young woman, in her early 20s. Once we'd introduced ourselves, discussed our club business, and our club's community project (making greeting cards for Caring Hands Hospice), I quizzed the agent about her background (she worked as a dietician at our local hospital before becoming an EH agent). She is naturally interested in emphasizing diet and exercise for EH members.

She was interested in seeing examples of cards we'd made, as well as looking at family scrapbooks. She seemed very interested in these projects. By the time we'd talked and purused the crafts, it was nearly 2 p.m., so I served refreshments of the fruit and brownies, which were obviously enjoyed by everyone. Even the health-conscious agent indulged in a brownie, as did we all, because who can resist chocolate?

Then we all began work on our individual card-making projects. The agent had never made greeting cards before, so I gathered materials for her to make one for her father, who celebrated a birthday a couple of days ago, but whom she will see this weekend. She used a buff card on which she placed a wood-print piece of scrap paper topped with a buff tag. She used individual-letter rubber stamps for a "Happy Birthday" greeting, and then finished by using brown leaf stickers here and there. It turned out nice, and she seemed pleased with her effort.

The meeting usually ends at 3 p.m., but since we were enjoying ourselves, we worked until 3:30. The agent is now interested in attending our meetings whenever she can, so I will add her to my list of those to call each month. She agrees that this would be a way for her to step away from her job for a couple of hours and relax with a craft. And it would still be considered a part of her job, since she is required to visit clubs and desiminate information.

Today, for instance, she told us about a 12-week exercise program that will emphasize strength training with weights. The other club member is interested in participating, though I will not be able to, since the sessions are on Mondays and Wednesdays. Mondays are busy for me, since I have water aerobics in the morning, and then an ESL session in the afternoon.

Also, today, we discussed a possible trip to another town to visit a pioneer village in the fall. This would be considered an educational trip. I agreed to research this, and when I did, I found that there is an open house scheduled for Dec. 8. I e-mailed the contact person to see if there would be another in the fall.

Later, after the ladies had left, Hubbie and I went to a popular chicken fast-food restaurant and picked up two combo chicken dinners, using two complimentary free-meal tickets we'd won at the county fair. Tonight was a good time to use them, since I didn't have a meal planned.

We had a choice of combo meals, and so naturally I chose the largest one, each box of which had four pieces of chicken, a biscuit, and a choice of sides (I chose mashed potatoes and gravy, and coleslaw), and large drinks. I chose Sprite, and Hubbie chose Dr. Pepper.

There was more than enough chicken for the three of us, with three pieces left over for lunch tomorrow. I heated leftover macaroni and cheese to go with the meal.

As soon as we'd eaten, I accompanied Mother to her house, since the day was darkening as though rain was in the offing. Nothing happened, though, drat it.

Spent the rest of the evening watching TV, including a movie called, "The Debt," a 2010 film about three agents who, in 1965, go into East Berlin to capture a Nazi criminal. Thirty years later, will we learn that they succeeded? What secrets will be revealed? Stars Helen Mirren.

Followed this with a 1997 movie called, "The Devil's Own," starring Harrison Ford, and Brad Pitt. A police officer discovers that his houseguest is an IRA terrorist who escaped British troops in Belfast and somehow ended up in New York City.

Note: Hubbie took the van to the shop yesterday, because the tire that needed air a few days ago began leaking again. Mechanics discovered a piece of metal had penetrated the tire near the rim, effectively destroying the tire.

Fortunately, road hazard insurance still covered the six-month old tire, so there was no charge for a new one. All we had to pay was labor plus six months wear, which amounted to about $30. Of course, I can remember when the price of tires was about that much!

Wednesday, August 15

Up around 7:30 this morning, and did stair stepping, resistance bands, and weights exercises after breakfast. Hubbie accompanied Mother to our house mid-morning.

Once I was ready for the day, Mother and I made greeting cards. Mother decided she was in the mood for it today, once I gave her an idea and prepared papers, suggested stickers to use, etc. She made two birthday cards suited for kids. I made a couple of adult birthday cards.

After lunch, Hubbie and I spruced the house for company tomorrow...the scrapbook club will meet in the afternoon. I called the new Extension Homemakers agent and invited her to the meeting, and she said she is free to come.

Later, Mother and I resumed card-making until around 4 p.m., when I put dishes of leftovers in the oven for supper. We had a choice of round steak in gravy, with mashed potatoes, macaroni and cheese, zucchini and yellow squash, English peas, and spinach, along with bread and butter.

Accompanied Mother home afterward, and then Hubbie and I went to the WDCS for a few grocery items, mainly fruit. I picked up grapes, strawberries, and a pineapple, which I'll add to cataloupe, watermelon, and cherries, as a snack tomorrow afternoon, and for a fruit plate with dip to take to Granddaughter's baby shower Saturday. I also picked up sour cream and cream cheese to add to a package of dry peach dip mix.

Hubbie bought boxes of brownie mix, and when we got back home, he baked a batch of the treats to offer the ladies tomorrow. I'm thinking the new EH agent will want the fruit, since her main emphasis is health and fitness. She is currently promoting a 12-week diet and exercise program called "Strong Woman."

Watched a couple of one-hour shows on TV for the rest of the evening.

Tuesday, August 14

Slept late, until around 8 a.m. Since it was such a nice morning, I decided a bike ride was in order, so after breakfast, I dressed for exercise. While I did this, Hubbie accompanied Mother to our house.

Enjoyed the ride...sunny, but breezy, and only one dog came yapping out at us. At the riding school, several young people mounted on horses were being trained by a couple of older women.

A herd of cattle in a pasture were gathered under trees, where one began bawling, setting the whole herd responding. Wonder what stirred them up? Maybe it was that there's not a blade of grass for grazing, thanks to the drought, and the pond they frequent is drying up. I didn't see any hay in the pasture, either, so I don't know what they're grazing on.

Back home, once I was ready for the day, I asked Mother if she wanted me to gather supplies for her to make a greeting card. She wasn't interested. In fact, she hasn't been interested in crafts, or even working her jigsaw puzzles lately. She doesn't act depressed or anything, just not interested.

There wasn't anything for her to do in the kitchen, so she watched TV until lunchtime. She said she hadn't slept well last night, so she was tired and ready for a nap right after lunch.

While she napped, I called one of the scrapbook club members to remind her of our Thursday meeting.

The medical clinic also called to schedule Mother for a fasting lab, and a visit to her doctor. Scheduled her for the last week in August.

After that, I made a birthday card for a friend, and then Hubbie and I ran errands...to a repair shop to get one of the van tires aired up, in accordance with a warning light; to the newspaper office to leave this week's word search puzzle contest; to the pharmacy to pick up prescriptions; and to the WDCS for a few grocery items.

Back home, Mother was already done with her nap. I started supper preparations. I sessoned round steak with pepper, no-salt seasoning, garlic powder, and paprika, and dredged it in flour. Browned the meat, along with onions, in olive oil. Added a can of low-sodium beef broth, and let the steak simmer for an hour and a half. Added browning liquid to the broth, and then thickened it with a water/cornstarch mixture.

Hubbie peeled potatoes, which I boiled and mashed later. Served the meal with sides of spinach and English peas...spinach for Hubbie and me, and peas for Mother, who has never like spinach.

Accompanied Mother home after supper, and waited until she had showered, before returning home.

Hubbie and I settled in to watch TV. Absolutely nothing on TV tonight, so I dug out a DVD that we hadn't watched yet..."The Sandlot." This 1993 movie was one I'd gotten for cereal box tops some time ago. Hubbie thoroughly enjoyed this coming-of-age movie about a bunch of ten to twelve-year-old kids, who form a sandlot baseball team and get into all sorts of scrapes. Family comedy. PG rated.

Monday, August 13

Some parts of the state got rain overnight and this morning, but once again, our county was left out. Boo. The weather was tolerable today, though.

Slept late, until about 8 a.m. Did stair stepping, resistance bands, and weights exercises after breakfast. Hubbie accompanied Mother to our house around 9 a.m.

Once I was ready for the day, Mother chopped bell pepper and mushrooms. I sauteed the mushrooms for the freezer, and put the bell pepper in a pan of water to be boiled for macaroni. When the macaroni had cooked, I made a cheese sauce to add to it.

Didn't accomplish much else before noon. For lunch, Mother had her usual Ramen Noodle soup. I found a couple of homemade fajitas in the freezer, which I heated in the oven and served with small servings of the mac and cheese for Hubbie and me.

Mother headed to the couch after lunch, and I worked to create a baby shower card for Granddaughter, who will be honored this coming Saturday. It takes a while to decide on a design and then search for appropriate papers, etc.

Mother finished her nap early this afternoon, around 3 p.m., and relaxed in den. I needed to make a birthday card for a friend, but didn't have any ideas for a design, so I spent time browsing card-making books and magazines for an idea, and found one I can adapt. I'll work on it tomorrow.

I usually have an ESL class today, but I noticed an ad in our local newspaper Friday annoucing that the college would be closed all day today. I e-mailed my student right away to let her know we won't meet until next Monday. I wonder why the librarian didn't alert me to this while we were there last Monday? If I hadn't just happened to see that ad, the student and I would have made a wasted trip to the college today.

Shortly after 4 p.m., I put leftover veggies, and some of the macaroni and cheese into the oven to heat. We had the meal with slices of homemade wheat bread. Accompanied Mother to her house afterward.

Hubbie and I watched TV for the evening, including an episode of "Mystery Woman," from the Hallmerk Movie Channel.

Sunday, August 12

Up around 7:30. Skipped my exercises after breakfast, as I usually do on Sunday. Hubbie accompanied Mother to our house around 9 a.m., and while I got ready for the day, she and Hubbie prepared veggies for the steamer...new potatoes, and yellow and zucchini squash, along with onions.

Spent the rest of the morning doing this and that. When we were ready to sit down to lunch, I started a cable channel On Demand movie..."Joyful Noise," starring Queen Latifah and Dolly Parton.

We received a notice from the cable company offering a free movie from On Demand or Pay-Per-View channels during the month of August. There were several movies that Hubbie and I might have been interested in, but I was looking for something PG or PG-13 that Mother could enjoy. "Joyful Noise" seemed to fit the bill. It's no award winner, for sure, but it's an entertaining fluff piece, with lots of energetic music, and nothing very serious for a plot.

Afterward, Mother retired to the couch for a nap, and Hubbie and I watched a movie I'd recorded on DVR..."The Greatest Game Ever Played," the 2005 true story of Francis Quinet, a golf caddy in the early 1900s, who, against all odds, became a golf champion. In his era, golf was "a gentleman's sport" of the wealthy elite, while Quinet was the son of immigrants. Very good film. We are not golf fans, but we are fans of triumph over adversity sports movies.

Followed that movie with one called, "Too Young the Hero," a Hallmark Channel film. This 1988 movie is a true story about Calvin Graham, who at the age of 12, fakes his birth certificate in order to join the Navy. Naturally, things do not go smoothly, but he eventually earns a Purple Heart for bravery at the battle of Guadalcanal. Stars Ricky Schroder.

Mother had awakened around 4:30, and joined us in watching this movie. Afterward, I accompanied her home, and waited until she had showered before returning home.

After a sandwich supper, Hubbie and I watched one more movie, "Heatburn," starring Meryl Streep, and Jack Nicholson. This 1986 film is based on Nora Ephron's best-selling novel about a magazine writer, who marries a playboy newspaper columnist, who soon goes back to his philandering ways. The novel itself is based on the author's marriage and break-up with Carl Bernstein, who, with Bob Woodward, wrote the book, "All the President's Men," about the Watergate scandal.
