Saturday, June 21

Today is the summer solstice...the longest day of the year. I'm loving these long days, with lots of daylight.

We were up at 7 a.m., so Hubbie could get ready to go help the Master Gardeners work at a public garden. Right after breakfast, I did stair stepping, resistance band, and weights...both arm and leg...exercises. This time, I was careful not to drop a weight on my foot, which already has a nice big bruise on it.

Before I went upstairs to get ready for the day, I went to Mother's house to accompany her to our house.  She went to her jigsaw puzzle, while I got dressed. I spent the rest of the morning doing household chores, including laundry.

I also researched our state's game and fish commission site online to see if there was anyone who rescued animals. Yesterday, both Hubbie and I noticed three juvenile raccoons wandering around on a plot of land near our house. A few minutes earlier, we saw a dead raccoon on the side of the road. We figured this was the mama raccoon. Racoons are nocturnal animals, but these are too young to know to stay hidden during the day. We saw the animals again today, so I thought they needed help.

At the game and fish site, there is a list of animal rehabilitators, and one of them lives in our area. So Hubbie called him, and he was interested in collecting the animals. He didn't arrive for a couple of hours, though, and by the time he got here, the animals were in hiding, so we didn't find them. The rehabilitator said that he would come right away if we saw the raccoons again.

By now, it was lunchtime. Mother had her usual soup, and Hubbie and I ate leftover egg casserole from last night. Mother went back to her puzzle afterward, and Hubbie and I ran errands...to the post office to mail a birthday card to Great-Granddaughter, and to the WDCS for groceries for the weekend.

Back home, we relaxed and did this and that. Hubbie couldn't go out to the yard, because it began thundering, and it is said that if you can hear thunder, then you can be struck by lightning.

Later, for supper, Hubbie and I had turkey burgers, and Mother had a hot dog. Served the meal with salads and chips. Mother helped make the salads, and she pattied the meat.

Soon after supper, Mother was ready to go home, so Hubbie accompanied her. I went to her house around 8:30 to put drops in her eyes. Only thing was, I stupidly forgot to take the drops with me! We had a good laugh over that.

Hubbie and I spent the evening enjoying big bowls of popcorn, glasses of wine, and watching episodes of "The Forsyte Saga."

Friday, June 20

Slept late today, until around 8 a.m., but did stair stepping, resistance band, and weights exercises after breakfast. I decided to re-introduce my barbell weights back into my routine, but in so doing, I managed to roll an eight-pound weight off the dresser onto my right foot. I'll now sport a huge bruise on the top of that foot. I'm just glad I didn't break it.

Around 9:30, Hubbie accompanied Mother to our house, and I brought out a stack of jigsaw puzzles for her to choose from. When she had chosen one, and was comfortably settled and ready to go to work, I went upstairs to get ready for the day.

While I was getting ready, I heard a familiar meowing outside the bathroom door. I checked and saw that it was the constipated cat. Where had she come from? I called downstairs to ask about her, and Hubbie told me he'd found the cat over the rafters in the garage. I guess she'd been hiding there since she escaped a couple of days ago.

No doubt our old crooked-jaw tom cat scared her into the rafters. He thinks he owns the property, and doesn't take kindly to other cats invading, even though the constipated cat, and another black cat, were born here, and have as much right to stay as he does. The other black cat simply stays out of the old tom's way, and refuses to be run off.

Once I was dressed, Hubbie and I ran a few errands, including going to the farmer's market to pick up new potatoes, small yellow squash, green beans, tomatoes, and purple hull peas for our Sunday dinner.

We were back home at noon, and ready for lunch. Mother had her usual soup, I had gravy over bread, and Hubbie had a ham sandwich.

Afterward, Mother returned to her puzzle, Hubbie went out to work in the yard, and I completed yearly federal reports of our scrapbook club, due to the county Extension Homemakers Council before July 1. I'm cutting it pretty close, but they are ready now to be delivered to the office on Monday.

It seems ridiculous to have to spend a couple of hours filling out forms reporting to the government the meager income and expenses of our club. It's tedious, which is why I put off doing it until the last minute. But submitting the reports assures that our club will continue to receive a small annual grant from the County EH Council that helps buy supplies for making greeting cards for Caring Hands Hospice.

Relaxed for a while after that, until time to prepare an egg casserole supper. Mother helped by dicing a leftover baked potato, and some onion, and ham, and then shedding cheese. I sauteed the potato and onion, along with bell pepper and mushrooms from the, then we layered the vegetables with eggs, ham, cheese, and bread crumbs.

Served the casserole with sliced tomatoes topped with cottage cheese, and canned biscuits, with a choice of honey, strawberry jam, or pineapple jelly, and cups of coffee. It was a very tasty meal.

Mother was ready to go home shortly afterward, so Hubbie accompanied her. I went over later and put drops in her eyes. The Hubbie and I continued watching episodes of "The Forsyte Saga."

Thursday, June 19

Up around 7 a.m., but skipped my exercises after breakfast, so I could get started sprucing the house for company this afternoon. For some reason, I developed a stomach ache mid-morning, but I didn't let it stop me doing what needed to be done.

Around 8:30, a Master Gardener friend of Hubbie's came to help him cut up the hot tub and remove it to a trailer to be carted to the recycling center. The tub would have been 30 years old in November. It quit working altogether last winter.

Now that the tub is out of the sunroom, we will engage someone to re-do the floor...in tile, probably. Then we will get a smaller, two-person hot tub, and furnish that room with appropriate seating to complement the metal table and chairs already out there. This will make another room for family to use when they visit.

Around 9:30, I accompanied Mother to our house, and then I continued getting the house in order. I also put together a fruit bowl to serve later...a mixture of  fresh strawberries, grapes, pineapple, and mango.

Hubbie and his friend finished the hot tub job around 11:30, in time for lunch. Mother had her usual Ramen noodle soup, Hubbie had a steak sandwich and potato salad, and I skipped lunch for a while, since my tummy was still off. An hour later, I ate a slice of toast with butter, and drank a little milk.

The ladies of the scrapbook club arrived just before 1 p.m. We spent a couple of hours scrapbooking. Mother and I did pages featuring Great-Grandson's graduation. Mother is limited in what she feels comfortable in doing anymore, but she was able to apply glue squares to the backs of photos.

One of the ladies brought a bag of greeting cards that someone had given to her for the club's use, and Mother enjoyed cutting designs out of them to be re-purposed in making new cards.

Around 2 p.m., I served the fruit, with whipped topping, in stemmed dessert dishes set on clear plates, with a couple of chocolate mint cookies alongside. The ladies commented on the visual appeal of the dessert. It tasted pretty good, too, and by this time, my tummy was ready to enjoy it.

The ladies were ready to leave around 3 p.m. Later, I heated leftover mashed potatoes and gravy, and served them with English peas, ham, and coleslaw.

Mother was ready to go home shortly afterward, so Hubbie accompanied her. Later, I went over there and put drops in her eyes.

Hubbie and I spent the evening watching more episodes of "The Forsyte Saga."

Wednesday, June 18

Up at 6 a.m. to get ready for water aerobics. I wanted to be sure to attend today, since the pool will be closed after today's session until the week after next. About 15 of us attended. Usually there are around 20. The water was pleasant, and I enjoyed it.

Back home, I learned that our constipated cat is missing. Hubbie  brought her home from the vet's Monday, after she'd been there for a month. This is the cat that was hit by a car, injuring her hip, and making it difficult for her to have a bowel movement without daily doses of mineral oil.

Hubbie has had to take her to the vet a couple of times because of her problem, and the vet has been very patient in treating her. And he has never charged a dime to keep her.

This is a sweet cat...to people...but she doesn't blend well with the other cats. She hisses and spits at the others, and refuses to be social. So the other cats don't miss her when she's gone, but I hate for her to be outdoors, because eventually she'll get constipated again, and we won't be able to help her.

We don't know how she escaped, but she probably just scooted out when Hubbie opened the sunroom door yesterday. Maybe she'll come back soon. I don't want to think of her dying in agony somewhere.

Hubbie accompanied Mother to our house around 9:30, and she went to her jigsaw puzzle while I got ready for the day.

I spent the rest of the morning gathering scrapbooking supplies, and planning pages, for a club meeting tomorrow.

I didn't accomplish much after lunch other than catching up on reading newspapers, and setting up an e-mail account for Hubbie on his new e-tablet.

Supper tonight was cold chicken, mashed potatoes and gravy, baked beans, and coleslaw. Mother was ready to go home afterward, so Hubbie accompanied her. I went over there later and put drops in her eyes.

We spent the evening watching episodes of "The Forsyte Saga."

Tuesday, June 17

Today is Hubbie's 80th birthday. Happy Birthday, Hubbie!

We were up around 7:30 this morning. I did stair stepping, resistance band, and leg weights exercises after breakfast. Hubbie accompanied Mother to our house around 9:30, at which time he discovered a knock-out rose bush in the garage. He brought it in and wondered who had left it there. I did. It had been in Mother's bedroom, and I brought it out and put in the garage when I went to put drops in Mother's eyes last night.

We had a quiet day, but I think Hubbie enjoyed it. As the day went on, Mother and I gave him birthday cards, gift cards, and scratch-off tickets. After lunch, he and I went to the grocery store to find a t-bone steak, salad makings, shrimp, and a loaf of Tuscan bread for supper.

Steaks are a bit expensive, but I found a package with two large pieces of meat in it at a reduced price...plenty to serve all three of us, with some to spare. I also found a large container of sliced mushrooms at a reduced price, because they were not white-fresh. I sauteed them later, and topped my steak with a few, and put the rest in the freezer.

From the grocery store, we went to a fast food restaurant and picked up containers of frosty treats. We came back home after that, and enjoyed the ice cream.

We each occupied ourselves for the rest of the afternoon, until time to prepare supper. Since we'd had ice cream around 3 p.m., we waited until 6 p.m. to have supper. Mother helped make salads, and Hubbie cooked the steaks on the grill. I did the other things necessary to getting a meal together.

We enjoyed the meal, but it's not one that we indulge in very often. Hubbie likes steaks, though, and his birthday was the perfect excuse to have them.

Mother was ready to go home afterward, so Hubbie accompanied her, and then later I went over and put drops in her eyes.

Hubbie and I spent the evening watching episodes of "The Forsyte Saga."

Monday, June 16

We were up around 6:30, though I didn't plan to go to water aerobics, because we expected the cable guy to come sometime this morning, and I needed to be here to tell him what the problem was with the TV, and make sure I understood what changes he might have to make.

I got dressed right away, and than had breakfast. The cable guy (a different one from the one who visited last Thursday) arrived around 9 a.m., and switched the cable box. The other guy had put another box in, too, but it performed even worse than the one we had originally.

When he decided the box needed changing, he brought in two others, because he couldn't remember which one was a unit he'd taken out of another house. I'm thinking he ended up putting the defective box in at that time.

Funny: the cable guy called this morning before he came. I knew who was on the land line, because caller ID showed up on our TV. But when I picked up the phone, no one answered. "Hello, hello, hello," I kept saying. Finally, when no one answered, I uttered an expletive, and hung up.

Later, the cable guy said he'd tried to call before he came. "But I must have been out of range, because I could hear you, but you couldn't hear me."

"Oh, oh," I said, "did you hear me cuss?" Yes, he did.

Let that be a lesson to me.

After the cable guy left, Hubbie and I put the house in order again, and he loaded the borrowed tables and chairs into the van.

Then I called the ophthalmologist's office to make a follow-up appointment for Mother. I also called the other scrapbook club members to remind them of our scheduled meeting on Thursday.

Time for lunch after that. Mother wanted Ramen noodle soup again. I opted for having my leftovers from the Mexican restaurant, and Hubbie had a barbecue sandwich and chips.

Mother was ready to get back to her jigsaw puzzle after that, and Hubbie and I ran errands...to the library, to the bank, to the post office, to the WDCS, and to the gas station. At the WDCS, Hubbie was interested in finding a cover for his new e-tablet. Found a nice one in a burgundy color.

At home, we didn't do much else for the afternoon. Supper, of course, was the same as lunch yesterday. Mother was ready to go home afterward, so Hubbie accompanied her.'

Then he and I went to visit his niece, because her two-year-old left a stuffed animal at our house yesterday. Also Niece wanted us to see the girl's new swing set, which is a sturdily built wooden outfit that features all the usual swing set stuff, as well as a child size picnic table under cover, and a platform reached by ladder. Naturally, the girl wanted me to climb up there, which I did, cracking my head on a cross beam at the top. Ouch.

Back home, we watched episodes of "The Forsyte Saga," on a DVD borrowed from the library. This period series was aired in 1967, and follows a family from the 1870s to the 1920s. It was daring for in it's day, as it followed the licit and illicit affairs of a a well-to-do British family. It's said to be the forerunner of mini-series.

Sunday, June 15

Today is Father's Day. Happy Father's Day to all the dads in the family. And happy memories of the dads who are no longer with us.

We were up at 6 a.m. this morning, so we could complete preparations for a family gathering honoring Hubbie for Father's Day and his birthday. No matter how much we accomplish in the few days ahead of a gathering, there are generally still three hours of work to be done before folks arrive.

One of Hubbie's daughters was the first to arrive. She brought a vegetable plate to add to the meal. Others arrived by 11 a.m. In another hour, almost everyone was here, and the meal was done.

Seventeen of us enjoyed a meal of a choice of ham, barbecue, or chicken (I cooked the chicken this morning in the slow cooker), potato salad, macaroni salad, baked beans, coleslaw, cheese dip, chips, raw veggies, fresh fruits, and a choice of lemon pudding cake, or pineapple upside down cake, and drink choices of water, sweetened or unsweetened tea, soft drinks, or coffee.

This is Hubbie's 80th birthday, so I put the number 80 on pineapple upside down cake. I usually only put number candles on Mother's cake, but now that Hubbie has reached his eighth decade, I felt he should have candles, too.

Hubbie got lots of nice cards for his birthday...which is actually on Tuesday...as well as a pretty spectacular gift of an e-tablet. His kids and sisters went in together to get this for him, mainly to entice him to use his social network page more.

Among family who attended today were one of his sisters (the other is ill and couldn't come), his nephew and great-niece, his niece and her husband and baby, his two daughters, one of whom came with her husband and granddaughter, his grandson and great-granddaughter, and his son and grandson.

We had pushed the couches back against the wall, and rearranged the other furniture, so there was room to set up three card tables and chairs. With the leaf in the dining room table, everyone was comfortably seated for lunch.

Around 3 p.m., everyone was ready to leave. Before I let them get away, I herded them out into the yard for a group photo.

It was an enjoyable day, but we were pooped afterward. Mother was ready to go home shortly, so I fixed a container of food for her to have later...cold chicken, and macaroni salad...and a container of cake helpings. She wanted a small piece of each kind.

Hubbie accompanied Mother to her house, then crashed in his recliner, where he slept for about an hour and a half. Later, I went to Mother's to put drops in her eyes and check the thermostat. It was set at 77 degrees, but she said that's where she wanted it.

Around 7 p.m., Hubbie and I were finally ready for supper. We had more of what we had for lunch, then watched TV for a while. I was plenty ready for bed by the time 10 p.m. rolled around.
