Saturday, Jan. 4

Up around 8:30, and did stair stepping, resistance bands, and weights exercises after breakfast. Hubbie accompanied Mother to our house around 9:30, and she worked on her jigsaw puzzle while I got ready for the day.

Today, I decided to use both bathrooms to get ready...the upstairs one for showering and blow drying my hair, and the downstairs one for brushing teeth, putting on makeup, since the sinks are not hooked up in the upstairs bathroom. But it's much easier to use the walk-in shower upstairs than the tub/shower unit downstairs. I'll be glad, though, when the upstairs bathroom is fully operational.

Didn't do much else for the rest of the morning. Hubbie made grilled cheese sandwiches for our lunch, after which Mother returned to her puzzle, while Hubbie and I ran errands.

We went to the library first to exchange DVDs. We picked up the final season of "The Tudors," plus a PG film that we think Mother will enjoy.

From there, we went to the bank, and then to a grocery store, where we picked up this week's free item...an individual frozen pizza. Got two more to go with it, so the three of us can enjoy them. Then we went to a health store, where I used a $10 coupon to buy a bottle of fish oil gels. Today the gels were on sale...buy one, get one half price. So with the coupon, I got a really good price on two bottles.

Our last stop was the WDCS, which was wall-to-wall people, all buying milk, bread, and eggs, in anticipation of possible wintry weather the next few days. We did buy bread, but only because we actually need it. Otherwise, we got things that have been on our list for a few days.

On impulse, I picked up a large bag of sliced almonds, which were on a 50% off rack. But the package wasn't marked, so at the register, it rang up full price. When we noted this to the checker, she had to take it way to the back of the store to see for herself that we'd gotten it off the 50% off rack.

Since there was a line of customers waiting to be checked out, I tried to tell the checker to just forget it and remove the bag from our order, but she was off like a shot, and I couldn't stop her. When she returned, I apologized for inconveniencing everyone, but she said it was her job to check prices so she'd know what to charge when another customer brought the same product to her register. I really think it would be better if  store associates would simply put both the full price and the reduced price on the package so both customers and checkers know the correct price.

Back home, I cooked more spaghetti to go with what was left last night, while Mother made garlic butter to put on slices of French bread. She also sorted pinto beans to be washed and soaked overnight for tomorrow's noon meal. She went back to her puzzle after that, while I made a peach cobbler, using a package of the fresh peaches we put in the freezer last summer.

Our supper of spaghetti and sauce, with cottage cheese, and warm garlic bread was ready by 5 p.m. There's something very comforting about a high-carb meal on a winter night.

Afterward, Mother decided to stay around to watch a couple of Lifetime channel movies. Before Hubbie accompanied her to her house, we had helpings of the still-warm cobbler with whipped topping.

Then Hubbie and I watched our favorite college basketball team as they played to wide-margin win. I'd recorded the game on DVR.

Friday, Jan. 3

Up around 7:30. Got dressed before breakfast, so I'd be ready when the guy came to deliver the new bathroom cabinets and vanity top.

He and the guy who has been working on the bathroom arrived about the same time. The unit was installed before noon. We hoped the plumber would be able to come today to hook up the sinks, but unfortunately he had to take care of his parents. His father, who is wheelchair bound, has been in the hospital for a time, but he was dismissed today. His mother alerted him that the heating unit at their home was not working, so he needed to go take care of it. We certainly understand this.

He is scheduled to be here Monday, but now we are hearing that we might get wintry weather Sunday night and Monday, so it won't surprise me if the work is delayed again.

The guy who brought the cabinets and vanity asked what hardware we wanted on the cabinets. Hubbie and I hadn't even thought of this, so I was sort of stumped. The guy asked if we wanted the white ceramic ones from the old cabinets put on the new one. No, I said, they don't match the new ivory/beige color of the new cabinets.

I mentioned that the faucets are brushed nickel, and he hastened to say that his shop has brushed nickel hardware, and he can bring a selection by for me to see and choose from on Monday.

Now that there are new cabinets in the bathroom, the towel cabinet/clothes hamper unit across from it will need to be painted the same color, and new hardware added to it. Also, the window frame, the bathroom door, and the woodwork will need to be painted, which the worker plans to do on Monday.

Once the bathroom is complete, I'll need to choose a new venetian blind, new curtains, new wall hangings, new bath rugs, and new towels and wash clothes, since none of what I have now matches the bathroom.

All this because I set out to have the walls painted.

Hubbie and I accomplished very little while the work upstairs was going on. I did write a few New Years greeting cards to friends, read newspapers, and continue reading the new John Grisham novel, but that was about all.

At noon, I fixed a Ramen noodle lunch for Mother, who had opted to stay home today, and then prepared a ham sandwich lunch for Hubbie and the worker. I chose to eat a PB&J sandwich, since I wasn't in the mood for ham.

Later, I started a pot of spaghetti sauce simmering. The worker left around 3:30, and then Hubbie went to Mother's house to see if she'd like to come over to our house. She was ready to get out of her house for a while, so she joined us for supper. Then she stayed around for a Lifetime channel movie.

Afterward, Hubbie accompanied her home, and we continued watching TV, including an episode of "The Tudors."

Thursday, Jan. 2

Today is the anniversary of my younger brother's birthday. We lost him in 1965.

Up at 7:30, but postponed my exercises until later. Got dressed, had breakfast, and waited to the worker to arrive to put the vinyl down in the bathroom.

He arrived around 10 a.m. Took him most of the day to complete the task, since he did some other jobs, as well, caulking around the shower, and sealing areas where cold air was coming in. He also replaced the seal and a tube on the toilet.

We are undecided on whether or not to get a new toilet. We want to explore new ones to see if there is one that has plenty of pressure. Some, in the interest of saving water, have so little flushing capability that the user has to flush twice. I don't want one like that.

While he worked, Hubbie ran a couple of errands, and I did this and that downstairs. Mother opted to stay home today.

The worker made only a minimum of noise today, but the products he used for laying the vinyl was smelly.

Around 11:30, I fixed a half a ham and Swiss cheese sandwich for Mother, and sent it along with chips and slices of fresh pineapple to her for lunch. The worker joined us for the same lunch.

After lunch, I exercised in the downstairs bedroom...stepping up and down on a stool, resistance bands, and weights exercises...and then showered and dressed.

Spent the rest of the afternoon catching up on reading newspapers, and playing on my e-tablet. Later, for supper, we took leftovers from yesterday's New Year's Day meal to Mother's house, where I heated everything in her microwave.

The worker left about 5:15, and shortly afterward, Hubbie joined us for supper at Mother's house. We cleaned the kitchen, then returned home to get ready to go to the college for a basketball game at 7:30.

It was an exciting game that our team won (finally) by 20 points! They lost recently to this team on the road, so it was nice to get a win over them on the home court.

Back home, we watched another episode of "The Tudors," and then headed to bed. We're expecting the new cabinet and vanity tomorrow, and the plumber has agreed to come sometime tomorrow to hook up the sinks. At last, we are seeing a light at the end of the tunnel, after nearly three months. We began this project way back in October!

Wednesday, January 1

Once again...HAPPY NEW YEAR!

We were up at 7:30 in anticipation of the worker returning to put the vinyl down in the upstairs bathroom. Skipped my exercises, of course, so I could be dressed before he arrived.

He called around 9:30 to say he had decided to stay home and cut wood for their house, since the weather was going to be fair and somewhat warmer today. He wants to get the wood in before an anticipated possible wintry few days beginning tomorrow.

He said he will come tomorrow instead. Hope so, since it now appears that the cabinet and vanity could be ready by Friday, which means we need to engage a plumber. Now that we're down to the wire, looks like everything is going to pop at once.

Hubbie accompanied Mother to our house around 9:30, and she and I prepared frozen blackeyed peas for simmeing. She diced onions and banana peppers for them, and I seasoned them with cans of chicken broth and beef broth, plus spices...pepper, garlic powder, no-salt seasoning, and paprika.

Mother then made a recipe of coleslaw, while Hubbie washed a bunch of sweet potatoes. I put  the potatoes in the oven around 11 a.m.

While the peas and potatoes cooked, we watched the Rose Parade. Close to noon, I heated servings of ham and some bread, and we were ready to sit down to our good-luck meal by 12:30. It was all delicious and satisfying.

After lunch, Mother and I watched "Happy New Year, Charlie Brown," and "Rudolph's Shiny New Year," both of which I'd recorded on DVR last night.

Afterward, Mother went to her jigsaw puzzle, and Hubbie and I began took down the Christmas decorations, except for the village on the mantel, which will remain up until the end of January. Note: our nearly blind white cat has already done quite a job of removing ornaments from the bottom limbs of the big colorful Christmas tree. Wish she knew how to put them away after she removes them, instead of scattering them all over the living room and dining room.

Later, for supper, we finished the Dragon Soup and the fruit salad. Once again, Mother opted to stay around for a while. We watched a Lifetime channel movie, "Taken for Ransom," an intense mystery. A woman is involved in an auto accident that kills her young son. She falls into a depression, intensfied by alcohol and drugs. Her husband gets frustrated trying to help her. Finally, he decides to leave for a while, taking their daughter. While she is alone in their home, she is kidnapped and held for ransom.

Mother was ready to go home around 8:30, and Hubbie accompanied her. Then he and I watched a couple of episodes of "The Tudors." We saw the first season of this several years ago, but then the following years, I forgot to record them. So now, we are going back and watching the first season again, since we don't remember what happened. We will follow up with the other seasons, since the library has them all.

Tuesday, Dec. 31

Today is New Year's Eve. 2013 is nearly over. 2014 is hours away. I didn't accomplish all that I wanted to this year, but I'm not one for making resolutions that I'd probably abandon before the end of January. I seem to have trouble just planning for the next day or week, because things come along that thwart me. So planning for a whole year, except in the broadest terms, seems useless.

We were up at 6:30 this morning in anticipation of the guy who is working on the upstairs bathroom coming around 9:30. Naturally, he was delayed and didn't come until 10:30. Sort of aggravated me, since I skipped my exercises in order to be dressed before he arrived. If I'd known he'd be so late, I could have gotten in a 30 minute workout.

Today, he put new plywood down on the bathroom floor, sheetrocked the wall where the plumbing is, caulked around the shower, where it appears to have been leaking and soaking the wood around it, and did other very noisy things that required some sort of air compressor at the bottom of the stairs that nearly blew my eardrums out. I decided ear plugs were in order. Hubbie seemed not to be as bothered by the noise, since his hearing isn't as acute as mine (though he'd never admit it).

Mother opted to stay home again today, but she came over near suppertime to join us for a meal. I sent lunch over to her.

I put a ham in the oven mid-morning, hoping to get it cooked and sliced for the refrigerator today. But I turned the oven off when Hubbie and I decided we needed to run errands. I don't like to leave the stove on when we leave the house.

Our first errand stop was a discount flooring outlet store down the road from our house, where I selected vinyl for the upstairs bathroom. We took along the vanity top sample, and surprisingly, within minutes of entering the store, I found vinyl that is an almost exact match in both color and design to the sample. The lady who helped us remarked that she didn't think we could find a better match anywhere, including at their retail store downtown. And we agreed.

Next we went to the art gallery downtown to deliver the bill for the supplies for the Christmas cookie house workshop. Then we went to the post office, where Hubbie bought a supply of Forever stamps before the price increases from 46 cents to 49 cents later in January.

Since Mother opted to stay at her house today, we came home in time for me to prepare her lunch, which Hubbie delivered to her. The worker joined Hubbie and me for lunch, though he had brought along burritos that a friend of his had given him. We kept the meal in our refrigerator until he was ready for it. We did provide him with a soft drink, and I shared our Italian cream cheese ball and crackers with him.

After lunch, he ran errands to pick up supplies for the bathroom, and to go by the flooring store to pick up the vinyl and a bucket of glue.

While he was gone, we ran more errands...first to the home improvement store to look for new faucets. Again, within minutes I found two sets that will blend nicely on that vanity top. They are brushed nickel, a very light brass color. These look so much better against that light beige granite than chrome ones would. And they are an excellent brand that were on a clearance rack at half price.

From there, we went to the WDCS for a few incidentals and groceries. Back home, I checked the ham, which had been baking in the oven, but which I'd turned off again to run more errands. The meat thermometer showed the ham to be at the correct temperature. Obviously, it had continued to cook while we were gone, even though the oven was off.

I removed it from the oven to cool enough to be sliced for the refrigerator. I decided we would sample the ham for supper, along with baked white potatoes, which I put in the oven around 3:30. also had corn-on-the-cob.  Around 4 p.m., Hubbie had checked to see if Mother wanted to come over to our house to join us for supper. She did.

In the meantime, the worker continued with his task, and finished what he wanted to do around 5 p.m. He joked that he'd been tortured with the smell of that ham all day, so he was looking forward to having some tomorrow, when he was to come and lay the vinyl.

After supper, we played several games of Skipbo, using the new deck I gave Mother as one of her twelve days of Christmas gifts. Hubbie and I each won two games. None for Mother this time.

Around 10 p.m., we retired to the den to watch a couple of comedy shows, followed by the New Year's Rockin' Eve show. Mother lasted until 11:30, before asking to go home. I don't know if she saw the ball drop or not.

About fifteen minutes before midnight, Hubbie decided to open a bottle of bubbly, but he had all kinds of trouble getting the cork out of it. He finally grabbed a pair of pliers, and moments before the ball dropped, I heard the cork pop in the kitchen. We toasted the New Year just as the ball completed its drop.

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Monday, Dec. 30

Up at 6:30 this morning, but skipped my exercises, because we expected the guy who worked on the upstairs bathroom to come and take out the sink top and cabinets, and prepare the floor for new vinyl. He was scheduled to be here at 8:30, but it was closer to 9:30 before he arrived.

Because he was going to work in that bathroom, we had to remove everything. Since the new sink top and cabinets will not be ready until a week from this Wednesday, we brought all my stuff to the downstairs bathroom. Once again, Hubbie and I will have to share this small bathroom for a while.

The worker announced today that he would like for me to choose vinyl tomorrow, so he can put it down on New Years Day, of all days. Hubbie is okay with this, but I'm not keen on it. Obviously, if he's going to be here, we'll need to invite him to join us for New Years dinner at noon.

I was less than happy about being given such a short time to select flooring, and I certainly didn't want to do it without having the color of the vanity top on hand. I don't have photographic memory, so I don't want to shop for vinyl without knowing what will tie that vanity top and the color of the walls together.

As it is, this whole project has been done piecemeal...first I selected a paint color that would not clash with the old blue vanity top, and then all the plumbing problems arose, which necessitated replacing the top and the cabinets. Then I had to choose another color for the top that would not clash with the new color of the walls. Now I'm forced to find vinyl that will not clash with those two colors.

The worker realized that I wasn't a bit happy, so he called the business that is making the top, and arranged to get a sample of it to bring to me tomorrow morning.

The work on the bathroom required cutting up the vanity, and breaking down the cabinets, taking up the old vinyl, and replacing some of the floor that had been soaked by water...all a very noisy process.

While he worked, I did chores downstairs, and then I showered and changed clothes before lunch. Mother opted to stay home today, so I fixed a Ramen noodle soup lunch for her, which Hubbie delivered to her house.

Hubbie and I had roast beef sandwiches, and since there wasn't enough, I did not invite the worker to join us. He spent his lunch hour fetching supplies that he needed for the project.

Later, I made a batch of muffins, and then we took those, along with Dragon Soup, over to Mother's house, and joined her for supper.

Afterward, around 7 p.m., Hubbie and I went to the college to watch a basketball game. Unfortunately, our team lost again. They did splendidly in the first half, and were up by about ten points at halftime. But it all went south in the second half. Disappointing. Oh well, they play again Thursday night, and we'll be there to cheer them on.

Br-r-r, it was cold outside today, but fortunately there was no wind for the walk to the gym. Counties south of us got a smattering of snow today, but we got nothing but cold.

Back home around 9 p.m., we watched a Lifetime Channel movie called, "Murder on the 13th Floor," which I'd recorded on DVR.

Headed to bed not long after.

Note: the van was repaired today, and Hubble picked it up this morning. So happy to have back!

Sunday, Dec. 29

Up at 7:30, but skipped my exercises after breakfast. Hubbie accompanied Mother to our house around 9 a.m., and she diced veggies...onions, carrots, celery, and banana peppers...for making a base for Dragon Soup. I sauteed the veggies in a small amount of olive oil, and then added beef and chicken broths, and frozen tomatoes preserved from our garden, plus various spices and herbs.

While these veggies cooked, I did this and that around the house, including storing some Christmas decorations. I like to get all the extra stuff put away, and then take the trees down right after New Years Day. The Christmas village on the mantel will remain as a winter village through January.

Later, I added several containers of veggies/gravies/pastas/meats to the soup. Whenever there are leftovers that are too small for a serving, or that will not work into other meals in a day or two, I put them in quart size plastic containers and freeze them until there are enough to make a big pot of soup.

It's called Dragon Soup, because I'm "draggin" stuff out of the freezer to make it. It's delicious every time, because of the blending of flavors, but it is also different every time, because there is always a different combination of foods.

Later, Mother mixed a batch of cornbread for the oven, and she and Hubbie enjoyed it, while I opted for biscuits and honey.

After lunch, we watched a  2010 movie borrowed from the library..."Country Strong," starring Gwyneth Paltrow, and Tim McGraw. A rising country star works with an alcohol sodden star on her way down. Romance plays a role in complicating matters. Rated PG-13.

We followed that with an HBO TV series, "VEEP," also from the library, but not long after beginning it, we realized there was too much language for Mother's ears .So I stopped it, and looked for something more mild on TV. Meanwhile, Mother went to her jigsaw puzzle.

After a while, Mother returned to the den, and we watched a Lifetime channel movie, " The Wrong Woman," about a woman who is accused of murder, is represented by a dude of a lawyer, and eventually has to act as her own attorney.

Afterward, Hubbie accompanied Mother to her house, and then we continued watching TV...episodes of "VEEP." We binge watched the first season, and if we want to see the second season, we'll need to request that the library to order it.
