Saturday, January 17

We slept late this morning, and I hit the treadmill before breakfast. After I got ready for the day, Hubbie and I ran a couple of errands...to the bank, and to the pharmacy...before we went to the WDCS for groceries.

Daughter called right after we arrived back home around 11:30 a.m. She wanted to let me know that two-and-a-half-year-old Great-Grandson has pneumonia and is on medications, but he is recuperating at home. Great-Grandson has asthma, so he is susceptible to lung problems.

Daughter, Granddaughter and I chatted until lunch time. After lunch, Mother occupied herself with a craft project, and I went upstairs to type the taped interview of the lady who recently had a book published.

For supper, we tried a new turkey-veggie burger recipe...ground turkey mixed with onion, bell pepper, and zucchini. We had the burgers on wheat buns, with seasoned, salt-free, no fat, baked potato wedges.

After supper, Hubbie and I watched our favorite college basketball team play to a disappointing loss. I had recorded the game earlier on DVR. After that, we watched an A&E series premiere that I had also recorded on DVR..."The Beast," starring Patrick Swayze. Swayze, who is battling panceatic cancer, is somewhat gaunt looking, but the look seems to lend itself to the rugged FBI character that he plays.

Friday, January 16

I got up at 6 a.m. this morning, dressed, ate a cold cereal breakfast, donned my "Nanook of the North" coat, hat, and gloves, and headed out into the 10-degree day to go to a 7:30 a.m. continental breakfast meeting of the home medical services board, held in the community room of one of the banks.

I was up early enough today to see the eastern partly cloudy blue sky become streaked with radiant pink as the sun rose. Very pretty.

The conference room was very cold, even though the thermostat registered 75 degrees. One of the home medical services staff increased it to 80 degrees, but the room remained cold. A bank employee, who also serves on the board, decided the thermostat is not working, and he will need to deal with it.

The meeting lasted a chilly hour, as we sat on cold plastic chairs. At the end of it, one of the board members, a neighbor of ours and retired rehabilitation counselor that we worked with years ago, could not start his truck. So I called Hubbie to bring our truck and jumper cables to give the guy a boost. Why is it that heating systems and vehicles wait until the coldest day of the year to break down?

We got back home around 9 a.m. Hubbie had built a fire in the fireplace, and he heated water to make me a cup of tea, which helped thaw me out. I didn't indulge in the continental breakfast at the meeting, of course, but I did bring pastries home for Hubbie, which he enjoyed with a cup of coffee. The cozy, blazing fireplace, along with the lighted village pieces on the mantel above it was charming. A smattering of snowflakes falling outside added to the charm.

Once I had warmed up, I started a pot of chili cooking, which simmered for a few hours. We didn't eat this for lunch, because we needed to finish the leftover chicken noodle soup, and barbecued chicken on wheat buns. The chili will be better for lunch tomorrow, anyway, after it melds flavors in the fridge overnight.

Mother came over after lunch, but we didn't accomplish much beyond planning the menu for next week, since we were interested in staying close to the fireplace. I did go to the freezer on the back porch to get Talapia fish out for supper. As I was moving items around looking for the fish, a gallon container of frozen 11-bean soup dropped off a shelf, hitting me first on my right leg above the knee, and then as I tried to catch it, thudding onto my shin, causing a swollen bruise that should be very attractive when I go to the pool Monday.

For supper, we had the fish, baked with Parmesan cheese, along with baked sweet potatoes, and black eyed peas.

Mother went home after supper. Later, I lounged in the hot tub for a while. Hubbie opted out, since he is already plagued by winter-dry skin. After that Hubbie and I vegged in front of TV for the evening.

Thursday, January 15

Br-r-r...what a cold day. It only got to about 23 degrees here today, so I'm glad I didn't have to leave the house. The other members of the scrapbook club called early this morning to say they couldn't attend this afternoon, so I called the Extension Services office where we meet to let the secretary know we wouldn't be using the conference room today. I also reserved the room for the third week of each month of 2009.

Then I had breakfast, hit the treadmill, and got ready for the day. Mother came over about 9 a.m. and started the 11-bean soup cooking. After that, she relaxed in the living room rocking chair, while I spent most of the rest of the day creating scrapbook pages.

Even though we had already gathered photos and paper for the project yesterday in anticipation of a scrapbook club meeting today, it still took a lot of time to decide on page designs and then execute those designs. I completed two pages of Granddaughter...one of her in dress uniform, and one in camouflage fatigues...plus a sparkly page of Grandson and the girl he escorted in the "Mr. and Miss Christmas" event.

It was after 4 p.m. by the time I finished the pages. At 5 p.m., we had a supper of leftover chicken noodle soup, with crackers and cheese.

Mother went home after supper, and Hubbie and I settled in front of the TV. I dread having to get up really early tomorrow and face the frigid weather to go to a 7:30 a.m. meeting of the home medical services advisory board that I serve on. I've been asked to bring my camera to take shots for the local newspaper.

Wednesday, January 14

It was cold, but not unbearable, for going to water aerobics this morning. The pool was cooler than Monday, though, and the water was cloudy. We supposed the filter wasn't operating correctly. Hopefully, the maintenance folks can fix the problem by Monday, when aerobics will resume. Friday's session has been cancelled, because of predicted frigid temps. I would not have been able to attend, anyway, since I'm scheduled to be at a meeting that morning.

I was a little concerned for one of the members when she arrived late, and then left to go to the dressing room after only a few minutes in the pool. When I got to the dressing room, I asked if anything was wrong, and she said she was very nauseated. I asked why she had come to the pool at all, and she said she didn't start feeling ill until she was in the pool. She thinks she might have a stomach virus. If so, I hope she hasn't passed it to the rest of us. On the other hand, I always suspect sudden nausea in women, since that is one of the signs of heart problems.

Back home, after I got ready for the day, I put together the materials I'll need to complete a few scrapbook pages at our club meeting tomorrow afternoon. Then I called the other members to remind them of the meeting.

One member is, of course, in another state with her son, who is dying of cancer. She is the one who lost her husband to a heart attack a few weeks ago. The sister of that man, who is also a member of our scrapbook club, said she talked to her sister-in-law last Friday, and learned that her son is expected to survive only six more weeks. Our thoughts and prayers are with her, of course.

The lady I talked to will attend the meeting if the weather is not so cold that she can't bear leaving her home. Indeed, predictions are for a very cold day tomorrow, so she might not want to come into town. Another member said she might be busy helping family sort through her mother's household effects tomorrow. Her mother died in a nursing home several months ago.

So we won't know until tomorrow morning if anyone can attend the meeting. If not, Mother and I will work on our scrapbook pages here at home. I'm anxious to do a page featuring Grandson and the girl he escorted for the "Mr. and Miss Christmas" event, and a couple of pages of Granddaughter in her military uniforms.

Mother came over this morning and put shredded cooked chicken breasts and barbecue sauce in the slow cooker to have on wheat buns for supper. We had that with leftover baked potatoes cut up and sauteed with onions, and leftover cole slaw. Mother also sorted, washed and soaked beans for bean soup with ham, flavored with a can of tomatoes and green chilies. We'll cook the soup tomorrow and put it in the freezer to have at an upcoming birthday party.

After supper, Hubbie and I listened to the radio as our favorite basketball team went down in defeat in their second SEC game.

Tuesday, January 13

I got on the treadmill right after breakfast this morning, and then after getting ready for the day, Hubbie and I went grocery shopping and ran other errands. By the time we got back home it was near lunch time.

After lunch, I went downtown to interview the lady from water aerobics who got a book published several months ago. I spent a couple of hours with her, taping the interview, and doing snapshots of her.

I got back home about 4 p.m., but had to go back downtown at 5 p.m. for an art gallery committee meeting.

Back home at 6 p.m., we had a supper of stuffed bell peppers, with green beans and cole slaw. Then at 7:30, I went to a community theater board meeting.

That meeting ended at 9 p.m., and I was home by 9:15, to watch a one-hour show and the evening news before going to bed.

It was a busy, if not very exciting, day.

Monday, January 12

I was up by 6:30 a.m. this morning, bleary-eyed from lack of sleep, after laying awake last night until nearly 2 a.m.

Thank goodness, the water at the pool was warm today for our first day since December 12. It was a chilly morning, so I bundled up in coat, hat and gloves. But at least there was no uncomfortable wind blasting my face as I walked to the gym. Only 19 of us showed up for aerobics, but those of us who were there thoroughly enjoyed being back in the water again.

At home, after getting ready for the day, I spent time recording birthdays, routine monthly meetings, and upcoming event dates in a 2009 calendar. One of the things I do at the beginning of each new year is list the past year's ten or twelve most important events. I've been doing this since 1998. It's interesting to review these lists each year.

While I worked on the calendar, Hubbie stewed a couple of chicken breasts in broth, carrots, onions and celery. Later, we added the veggies from the chickens cooked in the smoker Saturday, plus noodles, and had soup for supper, with biscuits and honey.

Mother came over after lunch, but she went home before supper, because she's been feeling blah for a couple of days. She said all she wanted for supper was macaroni and cheese.

After supper, I decided to stew some oranges and prunes together, because there are a lot of oranges in the fridge that need to be used.

Tonight, we watched the second half of "Tess of the D'Urbervilles," a public television offering. Of course, this 1800s tale of romance and tragedy ended badly for the heroine, who had been abused by one man, and then deserted by another after she'd married him.

Sunday, January 11

We were lazy again this morning, but I hit the treadmill right after breakfast, anyway. Mother and Sis came over mid-morning, and we watched the musical, "Cats," on DVD.

For lunch, we heated one of the chickens from yesterday, and had baked sweet potatoes, cole slaw, and green beans with it. Since we hadn't finished the movie, we set up TV tray tables and ate in the den.

After that, Mother napped, and Sis, Hubbie, and I watched a series of one-hour encore shows on TV.

We settled for deli turkey sandwiches for supper, after which Sis hit the road for her home, a couple of hours away. Mother went to her house, and Hubbie and I continued to veg in front of TV.

I hope I can go right to sleep tonight, because I need to get up early tomorrow for the first day of water aerobics after a month off.

Saturday, January 10

Today is my sixty-something birthday. I slept late and skipped my exercises. Sis arrived around 10 a.m., and a few minutes later, Son, Daughter-in-Law, Granddaughter, Great-Granddaughter, and Great-Grandson arrived.

Mother stuffed four chickens with onions, carrots, celery and garlic, and spread herbs on top. Hubbie put the chickens in the smoker, and we had these along with baked potatoes, cole slaw, and corn on the cob for lunch. For dessert, we had low-fat chocolate cake and fat free ice cream, with sliced stawberries in sugar substitute.

After lunch, there were gifts and cards for both Sis and me, since Sis's fifty-something birthday is January 20.

Son and family left mid-afternoon, and Sis stayed overnight. For supper, we had leftover potato soup and bran muffins, and then watched "Mama Mia" on a DVD I'd bought for Christmas.

After that, Mother and Sis went to Mother's house, and Hubbie and I watched our favorite college basketball team fall to defeat in its first SEC game of the season.

Daughter, who was not able to be here today, called to wish me a happy birthday, and I had a nice conversation with her, Granddaughter, and Great-Granddaughter.

A friend with whom I worked many years ago also called with birthday greetings, and we had a long talk and caught up on each other's lives.

It was a good day.
