Up at 8 a.m., and did stair stepping and resistance bands exercises after breakfast. Hubbie accompanied Mother to our house around 9:30. I gathered carrots, onions, and celery for her to dice, while I got ready for the day.
Funny: at one point this morning, I went outside, and from the front porch, I looked past the vinca vines around the well house to see a strange bird in the yard. It had a red head and a green and black body. I decided to take a closer look, so step by step, I quietly approached, until I got within clear view of it. It was the sprinkler.
Back downstairs, I did this and that in preparation for the weekend, until around 3 p.m., when I put a pot of chicken on to simmer.
I expected Daughter to arrive some time today, but it was close to 5 p.m. by the time she got here. I tried to contact her earlier in the day to suggest she bring her bicycle with her, but she was offline all day, so I never reached her.
For supper, I served some of the boiled chicken, with mashed potatoes and gravy, and canned whole kernel corn.
Then I made chicken noodle soup with the broth and remaining chicken. This will be part of the meal plan for the weekend.
We expect Sis to arrive sometime tomorrow.
After supper, Daughter accompanied Mother to her house, and then we watched TV, including a PG 2004 movie called, "The Librarian: Quest for the Spear," and the first two episodes of a new series, "Sleepy Hollow."

Tuesday, Sept. 24
Up at 7:30, and did stair stepping, resistance bands, and weights exercises after breakfast. Hubbie accompanied Mother to our house around 9:30, and I gathered veggies for her to dice for making potato soup. Hubbie peeled and sliced potatoes for the soup, as well as a few extra for fried potatoes this evening.
By the time I was dressed and ready for the day, it was time for me to go to the beauty shop to meet an 11 a.m. appointment.
Today, my hairdresser was in a fizz about a shopping experience at a local department store. She used a $25 off a $100 purchase to buy on-sale men's clothing for her son's upcoming wedding. She also bought a pair of shorts for herself.
But at home she discovered she needed a different size shorts, so she took them back for an exchange. The clerk charged her $1.86 for the exchange...a restocking fee, apparently. This did not set well with the hairdresser, so the clerk called a supervisor, who told the clerk to cancel the $1.86.
The amount of money is not what bothered the hairdresser. It was the idea that this store is now going to charge for exchanges, when it never has before. I think more and more stores are doing this, so it puts pressure on customers to be absolutely certain they want an item they purchase to keep from being charged that fee.
It certainly disturbs me, because I have to shop for Mother, and to do this, I have to bring clothes home for her to try. Several times I've had to take items back for exchange, and if I have to pay a restocking fee each time, it could run into money.
Back home, Hubbie had scrounged the refrigerator for leftovers for our lunch. Mother, of course, had her usual Ramen noodle soup.
After lunch, Hubbie went grocery shopping, and I made the potato soup. Following that, I made chili. Then Mother helped make a batch of blueberry muffins. I also made a recipe of brownies. Tomorrow, we'll make chicken noodle soup. All this cooking is for the weekend, when Sis and Daughter will be here.
Later, for supper, I heated leftover sweet potatoes and green beans, and fried the potatoes, and sauteed the last of the okra from the garden (which Mother had cut earlier). We sampled the blueberry muffins with the meal.
Hubbie accompanied Mother home afterward, and then he and I went to the WDCS to choose a couple of pumpkins. Sis has agreed to paint a Halloween motif on one of them for me.
From there, we went to Hubbie's niece's house to drop off some items for her to take to her mother's house in another town. Her mother will see that Hubbie's daughter gets the items. I stayed in the car, since Niece has strep throat and pink eye.
Back home, we watched episodes of "One Tree Hill."

Monday, Sept. 23
Up at 8 a.m., and did stair stepping, resistance bands, and weights exercises after breakfast. Hubbie accompanied Mother to our house around 9:30, and then he put color in my hair in anticipation of a beauty shop appointment tomorrow.
While I waited for the hair color to activate, Mother and I watched last week's episode of "Dancing with the Stars." I had to stop the show after 25 minutes, though, so I could go upstairs hit the shower.
Once I was ready for the day, Mother and I resumed the show, which lasted until noon. After lunch...Ramen noodle soup for Grandma, and pork chop sandwiches for Hubbie and me...I gathered ingredients for making pimento cheese. Mother insisted on doing most of the work...shredding the cheese, and mixing cream cheese and pimentos into it.
I waited until she'd finished the project before Hubbie and I ran errands. While we were gone, Mother went to her puzzle.
Our first stop was the bank, followed by the library (to return "One Tree Hill" DVDs, and pick up a two more seasons of the show. There are nine seasons altogether. Found a free paperback novel in a bookcase, too. This is a space where the library puts discarded books, or folks bring books and magazines they want to give away. The book I chose is an easy-read mystery.
The paint store was next. I thought we could get and out of there pretty quickly, but there were several guys ahead of us, all waiting for cans of paint to be mixed. I forgot that this was the last day of the store's 40% off sale, so everybody was doing the same thing we were.
I wanted to stop by the pharmacy store for a couple of things that I had coupon for, but Hubbie had forgotten to bring a coupon that offered 5,000 points for a $20 purchase. So we returned home to get it. Problem was, the coupon expired yesterday. So we went back to the store, picked up the items, and returned home again, because it was time to start thinking about supper.
Mother wanted to help with supper, of course, so she diced bell peppers, onions, and mushrooms to be sauteed for bagel pizzas. Then she fixed salads for each of us.
The pizzas were good. Afterward, Hubbie accompanied Mother to her house, and then he and I watched episodes of "One Tree Hill."

Sunday, Sept. 22
Today is the first day of fall, and what a perfect one...high 70s and low humidity. In fact the whole weekend has been glorious. One of the TV weathermen gave the weekend a "10" and I certainly agree. In our part of the state, some of the trees are already tinged with autumn colors.
We were up around 8 a.m., but I skipped my exercises after breakfast. Got dressed and gathered laundry, ironed some clothes, and did this and that round the house.
My plan for lunch was fried pork chops, green beans from he garden, and sweet potatoes from last fall that I'd put in the freezer. However the package of sweet potatoes was not enough for the three of us, so I sent Hubbie to the store to buy a can of them.
He was gone two forevers, since he decided to shop for other groceries, and pick up prescriptions. I really wanted him to just get that one item, so I could get lunch ready by noon. But it was closer to 12:30 before I got it on the table.
The reason I wanted to get lunch on table by noon was because there was a 2 p.m. program at the museum, and we all needed to change clothes and be ready to go by 1:30.
The pork chops and veggie dinner was tasty. Afterward, I accompanied Mother to her house to change clothes, and when we were all ready, we headed out.
Lots of folks were already there when we arrived, so we couldn't park in a handicapped space. But we brought along the wheelchair, so it was comfortable for Mother getting into the museum.
This was the annual meeting for museum staff and members, but the public was invited, because there was a speaker following the meeting, who presented an interesting program.
The program, called“Down in the Holler,” was a humorous look at folk speech that included words originating in the British Isles.
“Some travel writers and folklorists once claimed that if you dropped William Shakespeare in a remote Ozark holler (hollow), he and the old timers he met there would be able to converse and understand each other perfectly,” the speaker said.
She showed us a slide show of colorful words like “larrupin” “airish” “chimley” “passel” "sallet (as in poke sallet) "brake" (as in cane brake) "branch" (as in creek) and others, and asked who among us recognized them. Well, of course we all did.
Refreshments were offered after the program....punch, and a combination chocolate/vanilla cake, decorated in honor of the fifteenth anniversary of the founding of the museum. We passed on the punch, but brought home three slices of cake, which we had with cups of coffee.
While we enjoyed the snack, we watched a Lifetime Movie Network film, "Amish Grace," based on the true story of the gunman who killed five Amish children and injured five others in a schoolroom shooting in Nickel Mines, Pennsylvania in 2006. The shooter was familiar to the community, since he was their milkman. The community forgave him, and embraced his family...except for one grieving woman, who was at first unbending in her hatred of the shooter, but who finally finds her way to forgiveness.
After that, we watched episodes of "One Tree Hill."
