Saturday, May 21

Today is my great-granddaughter's birthday. Happy Birthday, Great-Granddaughter!

Well, the end of the world did not happen at the prophesied hour today, just as we suspected it would not. Our day proceeded pretty much as usual, despite the prediction. We were up around 7:30, and I did a treadmill session and resistance exercises after breakfast.

I debated whether or not I wanted to exercise this morning, since our air conditioner isn't working. But though it was a bit humid in the house, the temperature was moderate enough that with a fan running, it was fairly comfortable walking on the treadmill.

After the session, Hubbie put color in my hair in anticipation of a haircut appointment next week. Mother had come over earlier and relaxed in the living room while I got ready for the day.

We didn't accomplish a lot for the rest of the morning. After lunch, I went to the store that has a sale every weekend to look at window treatments. Nothing appealed to me, but I brought a catalog home to browse later.

From there, I went to the video/CD/bookstore, where a friend of mine was signing copies of her new novel. This novel features a photo of her on the book jacket that I snapped a couple of years ago. The author has given me credit for the photo inside the book. I bought a copy, of course, which she autographed for me, with a personal message. This novel is based on the life of her great-grandfather. I'm anxious to read it.

Back home, Mother and I browsed the window treatment catalog, where I found some that I like. But the prices are out of sight. So I'm back to thinking I might try to trim and hem the existing scarf curtains for the living room window. The ones in the dining room are okay. But I'll remove and discard the floor length sage panels, which the cats have destroyed. I'll leave the white lace panels on the windows, since they are okay.

Since our air conditioner is on the blink, we are avoiding using the kitchen stove. So I sent supper foods to Mother's house. She heated the leftover lasagna, and prepared a salad. Cottage cheese and slices of sourdough bread rounded out the meal.

At home, I decided to return to the video/CD/bookstore, where earlier I'd noticed audio books on CD on sale for $5 each. Hubbie went with me, and we picked up several by a favorite author.

Later, we watched a Lifetime Movie Network feature called, "Perfect Plan." During a downward spiraling real estate market, a young female realtor, who lives with an author who hasn't written anything in a long time, is financially desperate. So she is elated when she gets a plum listing. Problem is, the "brother and sister," who are supposedly selling their parent' estate, are scam artists. So she finds herself not only in the middle of a scam, but falls victim to a murder cover up as well.

Friday, May 20

Slept really late this morning, and didn't get up until after 8 a.m. It felt very muggy in the house, and I mentioned this to Hubbie, but he pointed out that the room thermometer registered a comfortable 73 degrees. Didn't feel comfortable to me, though. But I did a treadmill session and weights exercises, anyway, after breakfast.

Mother came over while I was getting ready for the day and relaxed until I came downstairs. We didn't accomplish a lot other than planning next week's menu, and checking our storeroom to see what bulk supplies we might need when we shop at the warehouse store in a couple of weeks.

For lunch, I fixed milkshakes for Hubbie and myself, using thawed strawberries that had been in the fridge for a while and had become juicy and limp. I used the blender to finish juicing the strawberries, and then added a little chocolate syrup, ice cream, and a little milk to make the thick drinks. I made mine with fat-free ice cream, along with the fat-free milk, but made Hubbie's with regular ice cream. The shake was all I had for lunch, but Hubbie had peanut butter and crackers with his (blah).

Afterward, I set the DVR for Mother to see the Hallmark Channel movie, "The Edge of the Garden," that Hubbie and I saw a couple of nights ago. While she watched the movie, Hubbie and I ran errands...to the hydroponic farm for grape tomatoes; to a grocery store to pick up a free issue of a regional newspaper, and cans of butter beans and beef broth; and to the WDCS for a few grocery items.

As we crossed the river bridge into town on our way back from the hydroponic farm, we noticed the sky had darkened to a velvety blue-black, transforming the misty hills to purple, and the trees to blue-green, with the whole scene reflected in the swollen river. It was quite beautiful, though we knew it threatened a storm.

We hoped that it would hold off until we got back home. It did not. By the time we finished shopping at the WDCS, it was raining really hard, and there was crackling lightening and booming thunder.

Umbrella in hand, Hubbie ran to the van. I waited until he pulled up in front of the store, and then we hurried to load the groceries. But I still got wet enough to need a change a clothes and a hair dryer when we got home.

The movie Mother was watching was nearly over by the time we arrived, which was a good thing, because the power went off shortly afterward. Thankfully, it came back on within a few minutes. But the storm raged on through the rest of the afternoon and into the evening.

It was cooler outside, but still felt muggy in the house to me. So Hubbie checked the air conditioner. Sure enough, it isn't working correctly. So he called a heat and air repair service. We have been placed second on the repairman's Monday list. So I certainly hope the weather remains cool until then. If Hubbie had believed me this morning when I first mentioned the problem, maybe we could have gotten a repairman today. Phooey.

For supper tonight, we had leftover Dragon Soup, with slices of sourdough bread. Since it was still storming, Mother waited until it slacked, and then Hubbie accompanied her home.

Tonight, we watched the 2005 Movie Network feature, "A Lover's Revenge." A radio psychologist tries to help a woman leave an abusive relationship, but her fiance' catches her talking to the doctor on the phone, and threatens her if she tries to leave. She tries to escape, anyway but is hit by a car and killed. Now the fiance' blames the psychologist and plots revenge.

Thursday, May 19

Sometime before bedtime last night, we noticed we hadn't seen our black cat in quite a while. So we went on a search of the house. In fact, we searched the house several times, but couldn't find him.

We decided he must have somehow gotten out of the house, so Hubbie grabbed a flashlight and searched the yard and garage. As with the house, he went outside several times to search for him. The cat was just nowhere to be found.

This morning, around 5 a.m., Hubbie took Shih Tzu out for a walk. Lo and behold, the cat was in the yard. When he saw Hubbie, he went to the porch and lay down submissively, so Hubbie could pick him up and bring him in.

He must have been alert and frightened all night, because he's spent the whole day sleeping. We're sure the outdoor cats didn't welcome his presence. We're just glad he didn't find his way to the busy highway in front of our house.

Hubbie discovered that the cat had escaped through a hole in a window screen in the sunroom, so he took the screen to a building supply business to have the screening replaced.

We got up this morning around 8 a.m., and I did a treadmill session and weights exercises after breakfast. Mother spent the morning at home, Hubbie spent his in the yard, and I spent mine sewing buttons on blouses, and organizing our scrapbooking supplies into a tote for an afternoon meeting.

Mother came over around 12:15, and shortly afterward, we went to the Extension Services office, where we waited in the van for the other member to arrive. Since I didn't hear from her, I assumed she meant to attend, but I wasn't sure. If she had not shown up, Mother and I would have just returned home to work on our pages.

Since the conference room door was locked, I went around the building to the office. There, I discovered that maintenance folks were waxing the conference room floor, so we could not use it. We are on the calendar for every third Thursday of the month, but from time to time, we are ousted for one reason or another. So I guess I should have called ahead this morning to be sure the space was available.

However, the secretary suggested that since there were only three of us, we should use the break room, which is what we did. Mother and I finished a couple of pages each, while the other member worked on a birthday card for one of her grandsons.

We were back home around 3 p.m., and Mother went to her house. Later, Hubbie and I had a supper of leftover hamburger/turkey burgers on buns, leftover Parmesan potatoes, and freshly cooked corn-on-the-cob, along with a side of tomatoes.

After that, we spent the evening watching TV, as usual. We saw a Lifetime Movie Network four-hour (about three hours, minus commercials) film called, "The Capture of the Green River Killer," about Gary Ridgeway, who was convicted of 49 murders, confessed to 71, but is presumed to have killed 90 plus, usually prostitutes, throughout the 1980s and 1990s.

Wednesday, May 18

Got up late again this morning, around 8:15, but did a treadmill session and resistance exercises after breakfast. Mother came over while I was getting ready for the day and started onions, carrots, and celery cooking for making a pot of veggie soup later for supper.

I spent the rest of the morning gathering materials I'll need for completing scrapbook pages tomorrow. Mother chose background card stock for photos that she wants to work with, too...of nephew playing with a Celtic music group at a recent local Scottish Festival.

I hope to finish pages of winter photos, and begin pages of our yard and house in spring, as well as snapshots of the March super moon event.

Later this morning, though, one of the scrapbook club members called to say she injured her back today while cleaning out a closet, so she will not be able to attend. If I get a call that the other member can't come, then Mother and I will work on our own here at home. We want to get enough pages done for the county fair in July.

Around 3:30, Hubbie and I ran errands...to drop the word search puzzle contest off at the newspaper office; to the bank; to the roadside stand to buy more strawberries (the vendor there also gave us an overripe cantaloupe for Shih Tzu, who loves the fruit); to a grocery store to get lemon and chocolate cake mixes, and a couple of cartons of my favorite brand of fat-free ice cream (in accordance with my request that the store stock it); and to the WDCS to pick up more photos at the one-hour service, and a loaf of sourdough bread to have with our soup supper.

It was 5 p.m. by the time we got back home, and Mother had the soup ready. This was another Dragon Soup (everything we could drag out of the freezer), also known as Bottom of the Refrigerator Soup, or Same Song Second Verse Soup. The soup is different every time, because it contains a different variety of leftovers each time.

The base is the same...onions, carrots, and celery sauteed in olive oil, to which is added beef and chicken broths, a can of diced tomatoes, and a package of soup starter veggies from the store. After that we add whatever is on hand...tonight it was portions of leftover macaroni and cheese, sauteed potatoes, onions and celery in chicken broth from last Sunday's slow cooker meal, overripe grape tomatoes, and yellow and zucchini squashes, plus garlic and a variety of spices.

This delicious soup, with slices of buttered crusty sourdough bread, really hit the spot on this cooler than normal, overcast-with-threat-of-rain evening.

Mother went home afterward, taking a slice of bread for her breakfast. Hubbie and I did our usual thing of watching TV. Tonight, we saw the 2011 Hallmark Channel feature, "The Edge of the Garden."

A man and his fiance' break up on the night of their engagement party, and he moves to Maine and buys a charming, but rundown house. Strange things begin happening in the house and in the garden. One evening, he meets a woman in the garden, who says he has found her locket, but when she tries to take it from him, her hand goes right through it. She is a spirit of the 1960s. Seems that he, and the woman and her husband, are living in the same house, fifty years apart. Eventually he and the woman become friends, and he gets a lesson in love and loss.

Tuesday, May 17

Today is my brother's birthday. Happy Birthday, brother!

Got up late this morning, around 8 a.m., and did a treadmill session and weights exercises after breakfast. Mother came over mid-morning, and after I was ready for the day, we located scrapbook materials that we want to work on at the Thursday meeting.

Then Mother worked on a jigsaw puzzle, while I went to my office computer to type and print journal paragraphs for scrapbook pages.

After lunch, I went back to my office to upload photos to a one-hour service. I'd fallen behind in getting prints of my snapshots, so it took a while to upload all of them.

While I was doing that, Mother put together a meatless lasagna for supper, and then went back to her jigsaw puzzle. Hubbie did various tasks outdoors.

Later, Hubbie gathered lettuce and green onions from the garden, which we prepared, along with the hydroponic lettuce I bought last Friday, and other veggies, like tomatoes, bell peppers, and carrots, for a salad to go with the lasagna. Cottage cheese, and the remainder of the loaf of yeast bread, made for a very satisfying supper.

Mother went home afterward, and Hubbie and I watched a 2008 Lifetime Movie Network movie, "Murder on Her Mind," starring Annabeth Gish. Based on a true story, Gish plays a woman who sits on the jury of a woman about her own age who is accused of murder. She believes the prosecution hasn't proven its case, but on the last day of the trial, she is five minutes late for court and is excused from jury duty. The accused is found guilty and goes to prison.

Twenty years later, the juror finds the notebook she kept while on the jury, and searches for, and finds the accused in prison. She visits the prison in hopes of making up for not being on the jury at the end of the trial, when she thinks she might have made a difference.

After that, we watched the elimination round of "Dancing with the Stars." We were correct in our guess as to who would be eliminated this week.

Monday, May 16

Another very cool day. The TV weatherman actually alluded to "wind chill factor," which usually is part of the forecast only in winter months. It has definitely been sweater weather today.

We slept late this morning, until nearly 8 a.m., and then I did a treadmill session and resistance exercises after breakfast. Mother came over while I was getting ready for the day.

I didn't have a lot planned for the rest of the morning, though I did call the scrapbook club members to remind them of our Thursday meeting I couldn't reach one of them, and the other one said that she'd been to the doctor this morning, because she'd had a woozy spell that left her weak. However, the doctor couldn't find a cause for it. She said that as long as she feels well Thursday, she'll attend the meeting (she'll probably drive to our house and ride with us, as usual).

I wasn't very hungry at lunchtime, so I just ate a couple of slices of the yeast bread I bought at the yard and bake sale Saturday. After lunch, Hubbie and I ran errands...first to the WDCS, where we shopped for both Mother and ourselves. Mother had quite a list, so most of the shopping was for her.

From there, we went to a pharmacy store, where we picked up four cans of on-sale decaf coffee in my favorite brand. The limit was two cans per customer, so Hubbie bought two and I bought two...the only four left on the shelf. These kinds of loss leaders disappear quickly, so we try to get to the store as soon after we see an ad as possible when there are items we want.

Then we went to a grocery store to get no-boil lasagna noodles (the WDCS doesn't carry them. Neither does it carry the decaf coffee I like). We went to yet another grocery store for my favorite brand of cottage cheese (the only store that carries it). In our little town, it seems that all grocery stores can't carry all brands. But since the stores aren't very far apart, it's no trouble to go from one to another.

Back home, I spent time going over materials for tutoring my Literacy Council student. At 3:30, I went to the library at the college down the road to meet my student for the first time. I arrived early enough to talk with a librarian about reserving a study room each Monday afternoon.

I got a little nervous when my student didn't arrive by 4 p.m., but I got a cell phone call from her husband, advising me that the student's watch had stopped, and she didn't realize how late it was. She'd be there in fifteen or twenty minutes.

By the time she arrived, we didn't have very long to spend together, because I wanted her to attend a "Talk Time" session at 5 p.m. So we spent a few minutes getting acquainted, and setting a tentative time to meet each Monday. I'm aiming for 2:30 to 4:30. The student said she'd like to get her husband's approval for this time before committing to it.

We had about fifteen minutes to devote to a lesson. First, I checked to see if she knew colors, calendar months and dates, body parts, clothing items, and countries of the world. She is well-versed in these, except for pronouncing the numbers three, thirteen, thirty, and thirty-one correctly. She also has trouble with the "sh" sound.

We briefly practiced a conversation between a store clerk and a customer, and read a simple story. The purpose was to introduce the student to answering questions, like "who is this girl?" and "how much is the ring?"

This lady is a very pleasant person, who is determined to learn English quickly. So she is immersing herself in every available class. She's taking a beginning English class at the college, as well as an additional session at a local church, besides the "Talk Time" sessions each Monday night, and our upcoming Monday afternoon meeting.

She's an attractive woman, in her fifties. She's about my height or a little shorter, and about my size or a little heavier. As it turns out, I know her in-laws, though she has only been in the country a few months.

Back home, Mother had heated the leftovers from yesterday's meal for supper. I was plenty hungry, after having only a light lunch. Mother went home afterward, and Hubbie and I watched TV, including a Lifetime Movie Network feature called, "The Obsession." A woman falls for her daughter's handsome ballet instructor, but the instructor is infatuated with the daughter. He's not above murdering those blocking his path to the girl.

After that we watched an episode of "Dancing with the Stars."

Sunday, May 15

Up around 7:30 on this chilly morning, and did a treadmill session and weights exercises after breakfast. Mother came over while I was getting ready for the day and put chicken in the slow cooker, and potatoes and yellow and zucchini squash with onions in the steamer.

After that, we wasted the morning watching a 2009 Lifetime Movie Network feature that we started yesterday. It was called, "Web of Lies," about a woman who works as an Internet security designer for a large corporation. Somehow the security is breached, and someone siphons money to an offshore bank. Added to that, the woman's boyfriend is murdered.

Lunch was delicious, served with the remainder of the loaf of yeast bread I bought yesterday. Mother went home afterward, and Hubbie and I wasted more time reading the Sunday Newspaper and watching another Lifetime Movie Network feature. This 2004 movie was called "Deadly Encounter," about a divorced woman with a young son, who runs a driver off the road as she is rushing to her job. She and her family are then stalked and threatened. She knows the stalker is the angry driver, though she doesn't know who he is, and of course she doesn't have enough information for the police to pursue him.

To continue our movie marathon, we then watched the 2009 Lifetime Movie Network feature, "Encounter with Danger." A man goes on a business trip and invites his girlfriend in hopes of rekindling their romance. But then he disappears, and she uncovers information that he was going to blow the whistle about corruption in his company.

After a cereal and toast supper, we watched a fourth LMN movie (2001), "Living in Fear." A woman accompanies her husband to his hometown, which he hasn't visited in 20 years, to attend his father's funeral. He left his hometown because of suspicion over his first wife's death. The wife learns that money entrusted to her husband's father has mysteriously disappeared, along with the husband's first high school girlfriend.
